eyfi
First, I hate to create a topic for such a small thought, but I searched for "helmet" and there were a few topics about the helmets but nothing about what I'm thinking about. Second, its pretty hard to do a ingame test involving doing the same accident with and without a helmet. So, I'm asking if someone knows anything about this issue? <Edit> Wow, I just realized that maybe this doesn't really belong in PC section... Well, up to a mod to move or not. Quemical
I have found that i die 80% of the time while crashing without a helmet and full health. When riding with a helmet and crashing with fulll health, i have only died once, because it was just a real bad accident where i flew off the bike and straight into an on coming car. lol
diamins0
I remember the first day I played GTA IV PC I rode a bike without a helmet like it was yesterday. I was going down the street, not too fast, then all of a sudden a car turns in front of me and I fly off the motorcycle. I wasn't even going all that fast and the velocity at which I flew off wasn't all that astronomical. I died from that collision. Ever since then I always wait for Niko Bellic to put on his helmet. =)

Riding the Hellfury, I was at full speed, and I hit a parked Cavalcade, and I flew of the bike to about 100m away! Luckily I landed in the water, plus I managed to 'clip capture' it! But I do think the helmets in GTAIV protect u from more fatal accidents. I can recall at least 3 incidents where I haven't died because I used a helmet. What's the point of putting helmets in the game if they wouldn't protect u? Edited April 6, 2009 by OabAli
Magic_Al
I was worried at first that Johnny can't/won't wear a helmet in TLAD, but he makes up for it by knowing how to stay on his bike. Niko is not so skilled.

SovietWarrior42
Yeah, they do protect a little bit, I just wished they would of made the chance of getting thrown off a little lower, like in between the original and TLAD. I mean, Niko can't be that bad on a motorcycle.
SKYHAMMER
Well, like everyone said: helmets DO provide more protection. When I first found that Niko puts on a helmet when on a motorbike, I made some tests. With full health I found an NRG900, drove down the street at full speed and intentionally crashed into a parked stallion, I flew like 100, maybe 150 yards and died. Then repeated the test with the helmet on and flew more or less the same distance, Niko kept like 1/5 of his health. Also I've found out that if you fall off from a bike or fall from some height and hit your head against something ((a car, a wall, a post, the ground... anything solid enough to do damage)) the damage will be multiplied. I once got stuck between a cab and a fence and fell off from the bike ((i was almost stopped)) Niko hit his head and lost like 1/7 of his health, couple of minutes later I was hit by a cavalcade and fell off, same thing, Niko hit his head and hardly lost any health. So, remember to wear a helmet!!!
WellsMcK
I'm pretty sure it helps out with not dying. I just wish I could choose my helmet. I hate the stars on the helmets. The only one I honestly use the black helmet. I will get on and off a bike until I get it too.
Astyanax
I think it does reduce the damage, plus it looks awesome when you walk away from the bike and Niko throws the helmet on the ground.
ikt
I think it does reduce the damage, plus it looks awesome when you walk away from the bike and Niko throws the helmet on the ground. Still, it would be handyif Niko could keep it on during shootouts. xD

SWEETSAPRIK
I always had the feeling that they helped with damage, but wasn't 100% sure because of how different each crash can be with Niko ragdolling around afterwards. Even if they didn't help I would probably still wear them, just so every crash doesn't lose Niko his hat or glasses. I also tend to get on and off until he's wearing the black helmet. I don't care for either of the others. I wish you could use some of your friends' helmets though. Especially Dwayne's, as it's black with the skull on back. Also, the only time Niko seems to refuse to put on a helmet is right after you yank another rider off, then I need to get off and on again to get him to helmet up. PяopagaиdaIиc. DjMiikkii
If you notice Niko loses more health when his head hits the ground. With the helmet the damage is decreased dramatically. So yes it does help!
TubbyJ
I had no idea the helmet actually reduces damage, I just thought it was a little extra detail R* put in there. That's pretty cool actually.
mark-2007
Whenever I crash on a motorbike (usually a fun thing to do if I'm beginning to get bored on IV), I speed head on until top speed and then hit a car head on. I usually only lose half of my life though, unless it is a tall vehicle where I'll smash into it. Maybe I should wait for Niko to put a helmet on in the future! Nice find here. P33t
I just tried that for the first time, amazing that I never noticed that before. He put a helmet on his had directly after getting on the motobike. I must have been to fast in the past with driving after getting on a bike. Nice action btw, I just bought a black suit for 1000$ and what helmet does he put on? A white one with some red/pink sticker on it, f***!
NikoB
Wouldn't it depend on wether niko hits his head or not?
Rachinator
A funny side note to those who don't know about the PC mod 'Player Selector' if your playing as a civilian or a burger shot worker or something and you get on a bike and hit nothing, they put on a hat or a cluckin bell chicken headpiece, just something funny i noticed

Jackal1337
helmet helps really, with crashes and shootouts. to make niko keep his helmet on foot keep aiming and he wont be able to take it off! i was having shootout, then i escaped on bike with helmet then my bike was driven to water and i had helmet still cos i jumped off, i had shootout with cops and i noticed i didnt lose as much health i would have without helmet
Rhoda
Has anyone noticed that Bernie (Florian) has his own special helmet? He wears a pink helmet on a motorbike. Not only that, but every character that can get on a bike with you has their own unique helmet. This goes for friends (Roman, Brucie) and girlfriends (Carmen, Kiki) who have open face helmets. With this knowledge, you can assume that Brucie is the character on the front of the IV box, and not just by his clothing.

What sort of tests did you do? How can you be sure that the test you did were free of independent variables, and that the results were consistent through-out?
