WizardSmash
i herd that they released tbwp as a true story when it first came out, then revealed it to be fake and directed with actors. did anyone watch it when it first came out, when they thought it was true, how was it?? makeshyft
I saw it at the cinema. It was a piece of sh*t. Edit: only mouth-breathing idiots thought it was real.
Guybrush Threepwood
I'll admit, I watched it at the cinema. In retrospect it was awful, but how could I know without seeing it?!

Wuirt
The director delibretly chose unknown actors and used cheap cameras so it had that student documentry kind of feel to it. They went as far as to change the three main actors imdb pages so they were listed as “missing, presumed dead". The film was made for $60,000 and in the end made roughly $250,000,000 worldwide, I really doubt it would have made that much if it was released using traditional movie marketing methods. Don Garcia aka NjNakedSnake
Well I was a youngin' when it came out, so I shat my pants when I watched in on VHS with my family.
Scarface187
It would of been creepier if they at least showed a figure in the distance and passed that off as the witch at least, not just showing them screaming and running the whole. The only remotely creepy part of the movie is the end with the guy facing the wall. I don't even know why.

That's kind of hard to believe. If you really are that old, you probably would have forgotten by now. Anyway, On-topic: I didn't think it was real, but i had a sneaking suspicicion that it was true when i checked all the websites and all the remarks about the actors being dead. Ottae
After various checks, I can categorically state that SMG 1994 is infact lambo205. So if he's lying about this, then he's probably lying about seeing the Blair Witch Project in the cinema when it was out. All of this is relevant to the topic however, so if you wish to talk about the issue further, go to PM's. Now, back on topic. I never thought the Blair Witch Project was a real documentary, because common sense reigns over such thoughts. I did once hear that it was based on a true story, but that's BS too. The film just used viral marketing (which is a lot more frequent nowadays) to sell the movie, and it worked.

Yeah, it was marketed brilliantly. While we may take it for granted now, it was quite groundbreaking at the time. It's still a horrible film, but made an absolute packet. Andyzoot
There was a sequel too. Was that shot in the same sort of style or was it something more conventional? I only watched it for the first time on Saturday. I thought it had it's tense moments but it's not something I would get on DVD. Just the sort of film you should watch once, just so you can say you've watched it.
makeshyft
I believe the sequel was a conventional film, but don't quote me on that as I haven't seen it.
OH NO
Great film, really spooked me. Excellent build up of tension etc etc. Dont agree with the comment that we should have glimpsed the witch, prefer to see less and let the imagination do the work. To be honest I dont even really remember the hype surrounding it as I watched it a few years after release. Ive never understood why anyone would bother watching this type of thing in the cinema anyway, how are you going to be scared in a cinema, surrounded by people? Or even if by some chance you watch this in a cinema alone, on leaving there you are immediately thrust back into everyday life and normal activity. This would take the edge off any horror for me. Ive always thought that horrors are best viewed at home. Being scared inside a place you otherwise view as comfortable and safe is what its all about. Imo if youre going to watch it, do it in the early hours in the dark, on your own. The guy in the corner? f*ckin hell edit: yeah sequel was some nonsense
beavis
I remember when it first came out. Didn't buy into the hype so I waited for the VHS release to see it. Some good moments, but I like many others thought it was a true story.
