dre91
Ok, round #2... I vote: Casino Because: Another Scorsese film. For round 2, I probably would've voted for a non gangster film, but pretty much all of them which I've watched have already been voted out in either round 1 or 2, hence my choice. A great drama with another outstanding performance by Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro who play two mobster friends operating in Las Vegas in the 70s along with Sharon Stone as Ace's (De Niro's) wife. Once again Scorsese manges to bring us the amazing insight into the Mafia. This movie also has its fine share of famous violent/comical scenes for which Scorsese is well known. Written by Nicholas Pileggi just like Goodfellas, there's no way that a movie like this could be bad. Very dynamical like all Scorsese films, definitely worth watching and a movie that we mustn't forget to vote and put on the list. 3niX
Well... Aah Im really torn between Mad Max and Airplane! (Nielsen at his best) for my second nomination... Nominate: Mad Max Because: Im not even sure if this needs any explanations. Its iconic and brutal. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. Rhoda
Can we add a second now? Sorry if I'm mincing the rules, not all here. I Nominate: Oldboy Because: It's one of my favourite films for the simple reason that you don't expect what's coming. The plot and casting is sensational and you get a wave of horror that creeps over you when you realise the end. The concept of being imprisoned for so long is made worse by the way it's narrated and it's just one of those foreign films that captivates you more than an English film ever would. DemonKing
Alright then, A second nomination arises. I Nominate: 28 Days Later Because: It's a whole different take on the Zombie genre. For one it's set in the UK which makes a change to all the other zombie films (not that makes them any less awesome, dawn of the dead I'm looking at you ). Seeing the scene of a totally abonded London was pretty eery, and Danny Boyle manages to capture the pure fear of the characters trying to survive there. Also he creates characters that you can relate too. But I guess the main twist here is that maybe humans are more dangerous than the zombies themselves. Might I add there's a few underlying political views hidden here, aka the government ceasing to exist etc. But overall Danny Boyle has created a very unique film here. Reminded with of the mafia in GTA You're already wrecking one competition, don't start that in mine. @Deeper, having seen all Infernal Affairs, I agree that they're amazing. But yea Departed is a great film but its pretty low compared to the original and Scorsese butchered the ending Where Infernals ending was beautiful and well crafted. The Departeds felt like a rushed, comic ending.
papanesta
For the most part it is just based on the first one. But, the idea of both of them sleeping with the same woman isn't explored til the third one during flashbacks. Just small things like that. I nominate: Grindhouse Because: A cheeky nomination, I know. But seeing as it was released as one film originally in the US of A, I think I can get away with it. And why? My two favourite directors combined in one film. Tarantino's awesomely dialogue heavy Death Proof, and Rodriguez's just plain awesome Planet Terror, linked together by the trailers you all want to be actual films, is just one of the best cinema experiences I have ever had. So glad I got to see it as a whole. Plus, what an excellent cast! It was this or Sunshine, Sin City... well, a sh*tload, to be honest. I think that's fine, as the 'film' was supposed to be watched in its entirety. It was only when the plebs got confused that they split it into two. I'd consider it one production. OabAli
After spending about half an hour skimming through this thread, I am rather surpised no-one has nominated or even mentioned (correct me if I'm wrong) SCARFACE. I nominate: Scarface Because: It is the greatest rise-and-fall film of all-time. A film about a low-life immigrant dreaming and ultimately achieving the American Dream. Tony Montana's rise to power is stimulating, from the slums to the high-life, on the way having to deal with shady dealers, the government and partners/friends that betray him. Such an engrossing story. Al Pacino's best role IMO. It is also great for it's portrayal of the 80s lifestyle: The Babylon Club & Tony's mansion, the timeless 80s music ("Push it to the Limit", "She's On Fire"), the fashion, the cars, the drugs, etc. Whenever I think of the 80s, I think of Scarface (and Miami Vice). Plus it has made a huge influence on subsequent action and drama films, hip-hop music, the definition of the American Dream (for us guys), and, of course, Vice City (and GTA in general)! Someone else could've made a better explanation than me, but this is what I chose, and I am obligated to give the best reason I can possibly make as to why I chose it. Glad to see A Clockwork Orange, Terminator 2, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Great Escape, Heat, Goodfellas, The Godfather, Reservoir Dogs, Total Recall, The Dark Knight, Alien/s, Fight Club in there. Other considerations: The Warriors, No Country for Old Men, Liar Liar (my most fav. comedy), Kill Bill Vol 1, 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Shaun of the Dead, Die Hard, Ferris Bueller. Anybody else want to nominate them ?

Oh and x2 on the Kill Bill suggestion, although there's already enough Tarantino films in there to be honest. Still, they're all good flicks. Exkabewbikadid
I won't try to veto it, but I think American Gangster is horribly overrated. IMO, it's Denzel's worst film, and not so much any fault of his own, but because it's an over-dramatized script that's only very loosely based on a true story. Not only that, the film portrayed Frank Lucas as a hardened, cold-blooded psychopath who seemed to be beyond any sort of redemption, so the ending made me throw up in my mouth a little. Second nomination: Sin City Because: It's the best transfer of a comic to a film so far in my opinion. Things like the use of black and white with only specific objects given color, fast-paced action that felt like a comic coming to life and great narration and storytelling make this film truly unique. Throw in some smoking hot women and unforgettable lines like, "...a fine coat like that and you're bleeding all over it." and it can't get any better than perfect. Don Garcia aka NjNakedSnake
unforgettable lines like, "...a fine coat like that and you're bleeding all over it." I'm partial to "...stupid old man." Groovy
We still taking nominations? If so, I'd like to nominate Who Framed Roger rabbit. Such an achievment at the time, combinging the live action actors and locations with the animated characters. In a time before CG animation no less, every one of the animations were hand drawn. The movie has such a timeless quality to it too. It still brings me the same kind of joy now, then when I watched it as a kid. That defines what a great movie is to me anyways. Second nomination would be John Carpenters The Thing. To me, it's the perfect horror movie. It takes the time to set up the suspense and dread without resorting to cheap jump scares, and makes you really care about whats happening to these dudes up in the artic, and it also doesn't need to use gore for gores sake, the graphic creatures are there to show you how f*cking serious of a situation these guys are in. DemonKing
Wow Paps, this competition is really shaping up. I can't see a single film on that list that I don't like. Which is going to make voting even more hard. Oh and I was waiting for someone to nominate Grindhouse, and I agree the film should be considered as one, especially seeing as it references Planet Terror in Death Proof, in the hospital scene. Oh and Xcomm. Nice one on voting for Sin City, Great film.
