makeshyft
Picking one is going to be hard. I nominate: A Clockwork Orange. Because: It's hard to justify this nomination without writing an essay, so I'll attempt to keep it brief. Thematically, it is intensely thought-provoking. Is it right to alter someone so that they can do no wrong, even if the will remains? The stop-gap approach taken does prevent people from acting out, but it doesn't stop the longing, the desire. It, like most solutions dreamed up by government, doesn't tackle the heart of the problem. The authorities see Alex as being cured, but his violent desires are still present. All that has changed is that he has been robbed of the ability to choose between right or wrong. It's also a visually stunning film, as Kubrick's tend to be; his music selection was nothing short of perfect; Malcolm McDowell is unforgettable in the lead role, and is supported by tremendous performances all round. Sorry for not elaborating more in this section - I just want to keep things short for now. Anyway, that was a hard choice to make, as there are at least a dozen films I enjoy to the same degree as 'Orange'. I'm in a strange mindset right now, and this one just jumped to the start of the queue. (Also, I agree that trilogies should not be accepted as nominations) Edited March 21, 2009 by makeshyft
Mike Tequeli
I nominate: The Usual Suspects. Because: It is simply the most clever modern crime caper I've seen, it has pretty much set the bar in its respective genre, most crime thrillers want to be as good as The Usual Suspects. Many of us remember the ending, the double twist, and I can say the film left me pretty much blown away. It manages to both entertaining and smartly written and these days a smart crime films are practically extinct, this movie stands out among them. Plus A Clockwork Orange has already been done. Robinski
I nominate: Layer Cake Because:It may not be the most popular film, or technically (as in direction, cinematography etc.) the best but for some reason it's one of my favourite films at the moment. It's a british crime movie that isn't too over the top like some (see: Rock N Rolla with the unstoppable eastern european hitman) and has some amazing moments. For example, the scene where Monty flips on the guy who got him caught with the body in the van was a real shock and quite graphic (maybe not the best word as you didnt see much, but it was harsh) and also where Mr.x gets shot on the steps of the country club at the end, didnt see that coming. makeshyft
Pffft... I've banged some pretty loose nuns in my time. Edited the original post. I figure I may as well try to encourage people to follow the format. Oh, also: I was wondering if I could wait until all the nominations have been made before vetoing? It's hard to do without seeing a full list. Edited March 21, 2009 by makeshyft

This is progressing a lot faster than I anticipated and with a lot of quality movies nominated. Keep it up.
papanesta
I know you're not stupid or blind papanesta so what's with GTAvanjana Ha ha, y'know, this is the first time I've noticed your name isn't spelt like that. @makeshyft, would you really veto any of the films posted so far? I think if vetoing is needed, it's going to be pretty bloody obvious.
Andyzoot
I nominate: Raging Bull Because: Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro are probably the most famous partnership in film and together they have brought about some classic movies that will be talked about for a long time (think Taxi Driver or the previously nominated Goodfellas) But I think the creme de la creme of this partnership is Raging Bull. This is Scorsese and De Niro at their sublime best and it shows in every shot of the film. Shot in a crisp black and white, the story of the boxer, Jake La Motta, from the Bronx who goes on to great heights in his career, only for it all to fall down upon him. Of course the boxing is only half the story, as while he has success in the ring, his relationships with his wife and brother suffer and climax in a violent fasion (You f*cked my wife?) It's a brutal and harrowing tale and that's why I feel it deserves a place in this poll.
Eminence
Unvirginiser got there ahead of me with Heat; probably my favourite film, too. So I'll go with another: I nominate: American Psycho Because: There aren't many films that can craft so much humour out of so much violence, and put together the whole thing is simply a thrilling masterpiece. Bale absolutely makes the film; his portrayal of Bateman is my favourite performance ever and is so epic and memorable that it'd be a crime not to love it. I love it. JoeyLeone25
I nominate: Akira Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai' Because: It is a brilliantly crafted piece of film-making by one of the Kings of the Directorial Chair kingdom. Seven samurai soldiers are hired by a village to protect them from villages (sound familiar with a certain western film) and thus starts a technical spectacle. Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai' is over fifty years old, but still stands the test of time today and in my opinion is one of the greatest films ever made. That sounds like a pretty cool film, I must check it out on the next few days so that I actually know what it is like when it comes to the voting stages. A Clockwork Orange is another film I haven't seen in years so I may give that a re-watch too. I somehow feel I've betrayed my childhood by not nominating Jurassic Park. Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai' is over fifty years old, but still stands the test of time today and in my opinion is one of the greatest films ever made. I was thinking of nominating this, it really is a great film, but I thought Toshiro Mifune was horrible. I nominate: Lawrence of Arabia Because: It's a great adventure. The sheer size of the film blew me away, the amount of extras and the lovely sun-rise in the desert and the beautifully crafted battles are some of the things that make the film great. Peter O' Toole is great in it, and as a fan of Alec Guinness I appreciated his roll, even though it wasn't that big of a roll. I am puzzled by how David Lean manages to keep the film so personal, and yet so focused on the big picture, that's what makes this movie for me. This, and The Bridge on the River Kwai are my two all-time favorite films, both directed by David Lean. Lawrence of Arabia is the epic of epics. It may be four hours long, but IMO, it should've been longer.

flicko
I nominate: Cloverfield Because: It had just about everything I could have asked for to make it a thrilling couple of hours; action, drama, romance, tense scenes, fear, realism, the full works. I've never once been gripped by a film as much as this masterpiece. The cinematic view, and uniqueness of the film was portrayed superbly. It really felt like I was there, involved with the dramatic ongoings the film depicted. Initially skeptical about taking the time out to watch this film, it's definitely £6.80 I will never regret spending. It was touching, in both an enjoyment factor, and the sorrowful love story it entailed. A true gem, at least, in my eyes.
Moth
I nominate: Gran Torino Because: I found this movie being my favorite this year so far. The story was great and very enjoyable for me.The Acting for the most part was great especially with Eastwood and the other actors were good to but nowhere near Eastwood. And the fact it is Clint F*CKING Eastwood brings it up a notch. Formerly known as The General
kietotheworld
I nominate: Terminator 2: Judgement Day Because: It is the action film all action films should aim for. One of the greatest starts ever in the lead role with Robert Patrick putting in an extremely menacing performance. Excellent actions set pieces throughout, and special effects which films today would be proud of.
Hart
^ Someone better nominate Terminator 1, I always thought it was superior to Judgement Day (although it's still really good) mainly because it was less comedy. Terminator 1 was sci-fi horror, it actually felt like this unstoppable machine, brutal, relentless. In T2 it was portrayed as a father figure which didn't work for me. Vercetti21
Lawrence of Arabia is the epic of epics. Man, it may have been just me, but that movie was boring as f*ck. Four hours to watch a guy walk through an empty desert. Woo. I'm not by any means vetoing it, just thought I'd voice my opinion.
flicko
This is really shaping up to be one hell of a competition, and the voting process hasn't even started yet! I'm so hyped up for this!
