The GTAForums Top 100 Films

Right, so here we go, the rules:

  • 128 films will be nominated.

  • At this point, each user gets to nominate one film. I like this idea, as I feel if somebody has to actually think about and choose their ultimate favourite film, they must have a valid reason for choosing the film they select.

  • If by some chance a complete stinker of a film makes it through this thought process, the next rule comes into play. If any of you feel a certain film should absolutely not be included, and I mean this film has to be horrible, you quote the user's post and say:

    I veto this nomination.

If you feel the same as this user, quote their post and add the same. After five vetos, a film will not be added to the nominated list. If the veto function is abused, punishments will be incurred.

The nominations layout:

I nominate:

Because:

If this layout is not used, your nomination will be ignored. As discussion is encouraged, like always, this format will make your actual nominations easier to spot.

If you do not elaborate on and give a valid reason for your nomination, your nomination will be ignored.

Now, to promote diversity, if your ultimate favourite film has already been nominated, nominate the next film from the list in your head. Feel free to make it clear that your initial choice is already there. I believe if users have to check through the topic to see if their film has already been nominated, people will get more involved in the process, which is great.

However, I'll also add a list of the films nominated so far to my posts throughout the topic, for quick reference.

And the most important rule; have fun!I'll let you lot know what's going to happen next when we're done nominating. I'd get the ball rolling, but I'm still thinking... biggrin.gif Edited by papanesta

I nominate: Pulp Fiction

Because: It's non-linear structure, mundane (but incredibly well-written) dialogue about everyday subjects, and use of crazy, often over-the-top (but always highly stylized) violence make this nomination-worthy at least. Throw in a great ensemble cast (Travolta, Jackson, Willis, Thurman, Keitel, and Christopher f*cking Walken) and you've got arguably* the best movie of all time.

*Notice I used the word 'arguably'. Please don't bite my head off.

I nominate: One Flew Over the nice personoo's Nest

Because: A classic from the 70's, directed by Milos Forman, it is a simple film that presents itself in a "day in the lives of" kind of way. The characters are purely amazing for this film. McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson, is a convict who is either very sly and doesn't want to be in prison, or is really truly insane. He leads the other patients to rebel from the daily routine and order, which was put in place by the vicious and dictatorial Nurse Ratched (played by Louise Fletcher). It's a study of the rebellious and happy-go-lucky protagonist McMurphy against the evil and tedious Nurse Ratched. Five oscars could not have been wrong. This film presented itself so well, that it made my top ten after only one viewing. A must see if you haven't.

I nominate: Crash

Because: Interesting sociology study, dealing with issues of racial stereotypes and moral codes. For such a large cast, the acting is great and each character arc is complete and fleshed out. It's fascinating to see how everyone seems to interact with each other in some way, and how one person can have such a large impact on someone's life. Huge emotional battles and a great plot that is designed piece-by-piece by the many three-dimensional characters.

I nominate: Once Upon a Time in America

Because: It's essentially Sergio Leone's Magnus Opus.

A mafia story spanning almost 50 years coupled with one of Morricones' greatest soundtracks? Yes f*cking please!

No dough this post will get questions and and maybe even some fighting.

I nominate Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Because it builds upon what was fun and exciting in the original Star Wars, in terms of space fights, large scale battles and starts to show the true potential of the lightsaber, from cutting open a taun taun, to cutting off your son's hand. Most importantly it develops the characters, from the stereotypical characters shown in the first film, to more their own characters. Luke starts to question whether following the old ways of the Jedi is the best path to follow. Han Solo shows his soft side by falling for Leia, and vice versa. And of course Darth Vader, faced with killing Luke, reveals that he is Luke's father, and offers to have Luke stand by his side and rule the galaxy as father and son. Now I know what you are thinking, why not just nominate the first movie? Well, the first movie was great in it's own right, but I believe that Empire is all around the better movie. It looks better, the acting is one up, and Vader revealing his secret is probably the most famous scene in cinema, that's got to mean something.

Indi. stole mine!

I nominate: The Producers

Because: Who doesn't love a comedy musical? It is one of those movies that when you say "Let's watch The Producers!" and everyone starts pointing out funny sections or songs of the film. It seems everyone loves a comedy, and everyone loves a musical, and it is one those rare films where everything turned out perfect, and even better in a remake. It's like The Holy Grail no one has ever matched.

I nominate: "The Blues Brothers"

Because: its a timeless classic with undeniable cult status. The cast is truly stellar with musical performances from some of the greatest artists to grace a recording studio. The humor in the movie is comic genius and development from "saturday night live". John Belushi is brilliant in one of his final roles. The greatest car chases ever. The multitude of memorable scenes and quotes. The gritty, realistic late 70's-early 80's feel. The two little guys looking for redemption and getting one over on the state and government that has downtrodden them their whole lives. All for $5000. True brilliance. And did I mention the car chases?

I nominate: Casablanca (1943)

Because: Where do I begin? The film is a masterpiece. It has romance, mystery, drama, humour, everything you could ever want all in 98 minutes. Humphrey Bogart, arguably one of the greatest ever actors stars alongside the beautiful Ingrid Bergman. It provides society with some of the most famous lines ever to come out of Hollywood and nearly always tops polls similar to this one. It's been 69 years since the films release and still ranks as one of the all time greats. Not to mention it has collected 3 oscars including Best Picture.

If you haven't seen this wonderful movie, I suggest you do. No matter what type of genres you're into, I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy it.

I nominate: Jaws (1975)

Because: Quite simply it is the original "monster" movie, the standard by which all films of the genre are measured up to. It's simple yet amazingly effective plot combined with a host of excellent, well written characters (such as the hero Brody and the anti-hero Quint), an awesome, and now famous score, and an overall tension and suspense in the scenes, that has been imitated by many but never topped, are what makes Jaws one of the true classics in cinema history. It was the film which saw Steven Spielbergs career blast off and the only film to ever have such a menacing effect on the general public.

After all, what other film has ever made anyone afraid to go in the water, even some 34 years after it's release?

Definitely, my most loved film of all time.

10 in 2 hours is pretty damn good.

There's ways of sorting it if it becomes a struggle... I doubt it will, though. There's so many amazing films.

I nominate: Tombstone

Because: This movie alone made me go from hating westerns to loving them. And after having friends sit down to watch it they all agree that it is a great film, even without liking the genre. Probably Val Kilmer's best role ever, and most people's favorite character. But with Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Sam Elliot as Virgil Earp, it gets even better. Both Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo are the perfect combination of evil and cool to make awesome bad guys. Historical authenticity aside, it is just an amazing movie, and hard to find anyone who doesn't like it. Not to mention almost every word in the movie is a badass quote you be repeating to yourself, and it doesn't ruin the movie, it all fits right in.

Win, lose or veto, see this movie if you haven't already. If you have seen it, see it again, you know you want to.

I nominate: Fight Club (1999)

Because: Quite simply a modern classic. Brutal, intelligent and darkly comedic, the story holds your attention the whole way through, whilst your dying to know just what exactly is going on. This is helped in no small part by amazing performances from both Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. There is a certain elegance and grace to Fight Club that is rarely seen in movies today. The scenes flow from one to another, the dialogue seems fresh and realistic, and the whole movie comes off as being effortless. Fight Club delivers a delectable helping of visual brilliance, original storytelling and exhilarating action.

Scarface187

This is going to be hard but......

I nominate: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Because: It is a masterpiece. It contains great acting, Amazing cinematography, a bunch of memorable well written characters, a classic story, and one of the greatest soundtracks ever composed. I can't think of another movie where the music compliments whats happening on screen so well. There is a lot of great dialogue and classic scenes here. It is one of those movies that are almost 3 hours that feels like one hour when you watch it. This is also probably my favorite Clint Eastwood movie.

Now someone nominate Apocalypse Now.

Vanilla Shake

I nominate: Clerks

Because: While I doubt my nomination will get very far, I just thought I'd throw it in there. For one it's my all time favorite movie. Made in 1993 and released in 1994, it's about 2 dudes who work at Quick Stop and RST Video (both stores are located right next to each other). It takes place throughout the course of a day and the both of them lament on how they've hit rock bottom by working at a dead end job in their early twenties (they're not in college) and they constantly take it out on their customers and in between dissect pop culture. Hanging out outside the store are the infamous Jay & Silent Bob, as this was the first film to introduce the drug dealing duo. Not to mention it's chock full of classic quotes, as are all of Kevin Smith's flicks. All in all it's a cult classic that launched the directorial career of Kevin Smith and opened me up to films that are based firmly on the dialogue as opposed to star power, and it's still got an extremely loyal fanbase.

It's also spawned my favorite number, 37.

And here's the scene it's probably most known for.

I nominated: Goodfellas

Because: Martin Scorsese puts so much energy into this film it is amazing, the way he shoots every scene, the fantastic use of music to make a scene better, the amazing insight into the Mafia. The actors like Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci make this film thrilling to watch. A roller coaster that goes for 2 1/2 hours, brilliant biggrin.gif

I nominate: Full Metal Jacket

Because: It's just brilliant. Kubricks best film imo, the first part of the film has so much dark comedy and delves into the minds of soldiers, turining them into killing machines, then it goes onto the actual war. It has some surprisingly good action and still maintains the humour throughout. Has great music, tragic moments etc one of my favourite films. Has a great cast all round and one of the best directors of all time at the helm. My favourite out of all the Vietnam films. (yes even Apocalypse Now)

I nominate: The Deer Hunter

Because: It's one of the most beautifully crafted films I've ever seen. It somehow manages to stand out from other war films in sense that it's not really a war film, but more about the hardships people went through in the Vietnam war. Featuring a stellar cast of Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep. It features a group of friends from an industrial town in America before, during and after the war. I think many of you will agree that the Russian Roulette scenes are among the most tense in cinematic history, the ending also manages to make you really feel for the characters. Not to mention the Catavina score by John Williams.

I Nominate: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Because: It manages to horrify without the excessive use of gore, and the imagery of the house alone is enough to un-nerve audiences even today. It's had a turbulent rating history in the US, particularly during the 80's and 90's. The end scene involving the infamous chase between Leatherface and Sally ending with the iconic "chainsaw dance" just leaves me speechless.

I nominate: The Godfather

Because: The Godfather is one of the greatest films of all time because of quite a few things. The story is fantastic, with Don Corleone head of the family at the start of the film, and Michael is Don by the end. In between alot of things happen that change the fortunes of the Corleone Family and the city of New York itself. And the ending is really good, this is when Michael goes from black sheep of the Family to ruthless Don of it. Which brings me to the acting, Al Pacino is really good in this film as are alot of the cast. But the best by far is Marlon Brando, he is the shining star in a strong cast. And the writing is great in it to, I haven't read the book but I've heard good things about it. So, that's it really, I nominate The Godfather.

I nominate: Forrest Gump

Because: I think Forrest Gump is one of the greatest films of all time for a few reasons. For one the story is great, Forrest Gump as a simpleton with a great heart going through his life. It was a unique storyline, and one of the best of it's time. I really got to love the character Forrest Gump because he was so Honest and never disobedient. Tom Hanks really was amazing in this film, and he got a best actor oscar for this performance. Also Gary Sinise did a very good job playing Lieutenant. Dan.

Creed Bratton

I nominate: The Shawshank Redemption

Because: In my opinion it's one of the greatest movies ever made. Great actors, great characters, great story. And best prison break ever. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were simply awesome. Morgan Freeman should have won Oscar for his performance in this movie.

I Nominate: Memento

Because: The whole concept of running through the story backwards to relate to the main character's condition is expired. Christopher Nolan did a superb job with the film, as did his brother Jonathan who wrote it. The idea is complex and entertaining and just as you think you know how it's going to turn out, the whole film makes a twist no one expected.

I nominate: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (If that's ok)

Because: A brilliantly acted and directed group of films that can be seen as a true metaphor for human achievement and a worthy tribute to the virtues of perseverence, honour and friendship. Although slightly dragging in places the myriad of differnt layers and morals of the films, and the incredible story they tell is worthy of making it on to any list of 'greatest films' smile.gif

The Unvirginiser

I nominate: Heat

Because: I feel that Heat is an extremely clever film with the foundations of a modern, Shakespearian tragedy. The main characters are ruthless murdering thieves, yet we still support them and what they're doing. They play a deadly game of cat and mouse with Al Pacino, all trying to outsmart each other, until finally they are face to face in the greatest shootout of any movie to date. The tragic death of Robert De Niro makes this film for me, because he could have left the city happily with his girl. But driven by revenge he stays to do one final thing and lsoes his life.

Beautifully crafted and intelligently thought out, masterpiece.

I don't know about nominating a trilogy. What's to stop somebody nominating the whole of Star Wars?

I'd choose one just now, Max. Unless people disagree. smile.gif

I agree with papanesta, even though they were all part of the overall storyline they were 3 different films in essence. Somebody, darthYenik I think, already nominated Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back which was also part of a trilogy, but an individual film itself.

If people start nominating trilogies and a film along with it's sequel for example the competition could get quite messy indeed.

Also props to MMFF for nominating Tombstone, hell of a film. icon14.gif
