GTA IV Performance on 2009 iMacs

I would assume you guys are taking into consideration the other things you can with a mac that you can not do as well with a pc.. right ?

He is not saying that he has the ultimate gaming machine. He is saying this machine that he has that he never thought would play gtaiv actually

plays it better than expected.

Thank you. To everyone: Obviously my Mac isn't a gaming computer. The whole point of this thread is that I was surprised that GTA IV would even run at all, and I was simply saying that. My Mac runs all of the games I like to play just fine, and at a stable FPS, besides GTA IV. I'm happy with that. I didn't buy my Mac primarily for gaming in the first place.

My question is why did you post this benchmark in the first place? You know theres a benchmark thread. Exactly, you wanted to either show off your mac or get sympathy from the other users. And last thing, you wasted 2000Grand for a computer that can be bought for 500$, man that must suck.

EXACTLY. This guy clearly wanted attention, what does he think we are? A bunch of ten year olds? We're responsible gaming adults here, we see through that kind of rubbish quite easily.

Let's get things in perspective here, he is running GTA 4 at 1920 x 1200 on a 9500gs.  The 9500gs is insanely weaker than the gpu in the consoles and they can barely do playable frame rates at 1280 x 720.  I wouldn't even attempt to run GTA 4 at that res on my 8800gts which is massively more powerful than the 9500gs.

Still we shouldn't let common sense get in the way and we should of course berate the game and Rockstar Toronto for not optimising it enough to run at an insane 1920 x 1200 on a £25 graphics card  biggrin.gif

i'm guessing you have the OLD GTS? because i can run 40+ FPS at 1680x1050 on the new 8800 512MB. (overclocked)

on topic: as others have said it DOES seem like he wants attention

Haha, why would I want attention? I honestly didn't even think about that when I was posting. I was simply posting to show others that might potentially buy an iMac that GTA IV can run on it. If I was in the market I would like to know the same thing.

He's running on Windows Vista through Boot Camp, and he's bragging about his god-awful 14 FPS in hopes that potential customers will spend TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS to buy a computer that can barely run GTA IV.

Then he's denying that by coming to this thread he isn't seeking attention, nor is he trying to defend his credibility, despite the fact that numerous users (over two pages worth) have criticized his post already.

Meanwhile, us PC gamers spent under $1000 for our rigs (I personally only spent $800) and my computer completely outperforms the OP's.

Windows 7 will be great. It will run good on bad hardware. Vista x64 is a memory hog. I barely have any ram left of my 4gbs with vista angry.gif

Please do research before you post. Vista Caches memory, so when something needs it its ready to go and it keeps filling memory with whatever it can so your ram doesn't sit there useless, its always doing something. It gives a performance increase, if you don't like it, you can always turn it off too.

Or you either have tons of spyware. When I boot my laptop has about 1.2GB/4GB of memory taken in vistax64.

If i turned off super fetch and all that jazz (which I would highly disagree you should do, superfetch.etc is effective and much better if you have anything more than 1gb memory it should be on). You can get it down to about 600mb/4GB on the desktop. You can probably get it lower. But theres no point.

It's far from Rubbish.

I found it amazing, he achieved something that some of us will not have the $$$ to try.

Or the time.

Heck 90% of the people here do not have the knowledge of how to do it.

Really if you do not like a post, move along and find one that you do like.

No sense in calling him names and telling him he only wants attention.

If attention is what he wanted, it's what you just gave him.

I do think he needs attention, because so far.

He is the first to do the mac as far as I seen.

If someone has done it before him, then he is one of the first. To me that is chat worthy

Thank you. I really thought I would be helping some people out by posting this here. I mean, holy sh*t, you (neilthecellist) are just blatantly accusing me of random things, such as my age, and my computer preferences. Congratulations, you have a better gaming PC than I do. I hardly ever game on my Mac, I just wanted to try IV out. Like TruXter said, if you don't like my post, just move on.

Wait, what? When was I ever bragging? I don't remember doing that. You think I'm saying this because I want people to buy this computer to play GTA IV? That's ridiculous. Once again: my Mac is not a gaming PC, it never will be. I'm simply telling owners/future owners that if you DO want to play/try GTA IV on it, as a side benefit, you can.

Yes, I get it, you spent less then I did. Good for you. I had the money; it was my choice; and I didn't buy it for gaming. That would be stupid.

Running this on an iMac 24" 2007 model

I get 20-25 FPS when the game is working properly, but it is tempremental.. especially on my 2600XT Card with z-buffer problems (only fixed in cat 9.1 but not 9.2 or 9.3)

If you like to see better performance, try getting a 9800 for your mac if you want to keep gaming. I think the processor is really being bottlenecked by that 9500, just a suggestion smile.gif

I have the "similar" graphics card like yours, just because mine is a laptop so it has "M" behind the series.

But I get a slightly better performance than yours. I can get 25 Average FPS, Highest FPS I can obtain is 30 in certain places like indoor.

I think the "Mobile"version is always worse than the "Desktop" version. confused.gif

No these macs also have the crappy mobile version 2600XT but when you install drivers from ATI you select 'have disk' crap and say its a standard 2600XT.. unless you have done somthing else?

Yeh its not the GPU actually that is the bottleneck, its the VRAM with a pittiful 256MB.. IMO I would only buy a Mac because it runs Apple OS and Windows so why bother getting a PC? The *ONLY* drawback.. is you guessed it.. the lack of upgrades which really sucks.

Laptops : Macs

Desktops : Custom build PCs unless you need OSX badly..

Exactly, take the GTX280M for example.

Almost identical to the desktop GTX 280. Right?

Right...?

I'm thinking about getting the iMac with the HD4850 because I just got some more money. But I would have to sell my iMac right now. The 4850 would offer a huge improvement, though.

Okay, well, I can run every major game (Burnout Paradise, all Valve games, COD4, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, UT3) at native 1920x1200 resolution and get at least 30FPS with this card. It performs amazingly well. Only game is GTA IV that isn't as great but it's just not optimized.

I really don't believe you. all of those games at 1920x1200? all on ultra-low mode?

I know COD4, Fallout3, and Farcry2 need at least an 4870 x2 or GTX 295 at 1920x1200 resolution.

Why did you buy an iMac? could have done a lot better with windows pc...

This is the problem with mac people. They don't know much about computer gaming.

When you play your choppy games (30fps) at low graphic mode settings. It's not fun is it? Horrible choppy games...sigh

The whole point of spending this much on a PC for gaming is for keyboard and mouse, and games looks a lot prettier than any console.

Look at my system specs, it's only $2k plus $1k for the dell 30 inch monitor and it does quite well in gaming.

Plus I can watch all the bluray & HD DVD movies. Wish you can watch bluray on that beautiful mac lcd huh? well you can't!!!

Well, unless you buy an external bluray play and install windows thru bootcamp.

Why buy expensive iMac & install Windows to have fun?

I am baffled how much apple are ripping its customers with its mediocre hardware.

4xGT 120 in the mac pro, WHY?

$6,100 for 32gb DDR3 1066mhz, when it cost $80 for 6gb DDR3 1066mhz

$300 for 1tb

I guess if you're unread and uninformed. you deserved to get served.

Yes, I was just playing Burnout Paradise about 30 minutes ago. Settings are all at as high as they can go, with 1920x1200 resolution, and I get 30 FPS. Checked this through Fraps. Also played Fallout 3, same thing, except some things are on Medium. Played a bit of GRID too. All settings High with 1920x1200 res, and 35 FPS. All feel smooth to me.

But since I know that this computer isn't going to bee very good in about half a year graphics-wise, I was thinking of returning this and getting a MacBook, and using the rest of the money to buy a gaming rig with:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

4GB DDR2-1066 RAM

ASUS P5QL PRO LGA 775 P43 ATX Intel Motherboard

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 1GB

700GB 7200RPM SATA HD

I can get all that (MacBook + Gaming PC) for the same price as my iMac. I'm just not sure... I really like my iMac, and I've been switching computers a lot for the last 6 months. (iMac > MacBook > iMac > MacBook Pro > Mac Pro > iMac) What do you guys think? Also, I was going to get an Apple Cinema Display 20" and put all the components in a Mac Pro case.

GTX 295 and 4870X2 are really designed for 2560x1600, and maybe a few games at 1920x1200 (Crysis).

So just stick to that resolution and you're golden...

Errr... what?

My friend has a 1920x1200 screen with an Asus EN9600GT and he can run CoD4 and Fallout 3 surprisingly well.

Farcry2 IS demanding, on the other hand, but my 8800GT could run it just fine.

Depends on what your definition of running a game is : Is it running all theses games at 1920X1200 all on minimum so that you can play at an exeptable FPS on an imac? Cuz I work with one 24 inch 2009 imac and It has a hard time dealing with all the projects I throw at it ( flyers, magasines, photo editing, illustration etc) I dont imagine games..... must suck being a mac user for games... oh wait theres Blizzard games for macs LOOOL.

Firstly your gpu is not even a card its an crappy onboard solution (its just the chip and physically not a whole GPU).... and most of the components in your mac are laptop components.... have you checked your ram how small it is? Did you ever open your mac to see inside? (looks like a laptop with one fan).

GTA4 is a cpu intensive game and your cpu is being used at 55% wich is not normal... look at my stats to see how its being used like everybody else in this forum

You got to be kidding me gaming at 1920x1200 with a single 8800GT

For what it's worth, Fallout 3 is capped to 60fps by default.

As for 3 of the other games: 92 fps? 101 fps? 107 fps?

Run those up to 4mp and you'll see those cards really shine. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy AoC and FC2 to take full advantage of it at 1920x1200.

I agree about the 8800GT, 512 MB is kind of a killer at 1920x1200...

54fps is unrealistic because according to FRAPS, i get 65-70fps indoor

outdoor: 35-50fps, sometimes drops to 25 in a few seconds if there are a lot of cars and AIs

water: 55-60...cause i set it to only high

How are people getting 20-35 FPS with 8500GTs, 8600GTs, 9500GS's, and yet I'm only getting 15 FPS? I have the latest patch, all that stuff... Good processor, lots of RAM, latest NVIDIA drivers (185.20), so how is my FPS so low? I don't have any BG processes, I also use the AMD Fusion tool to stop all services before playing. Still only 15 FPS. Why?
