Spring is sprunging, and exhibition games are starting.

The Angels are kicking ass in the preseason as usual (6-1). I hope they can keep the momentum going throughout the year like last season. Personally I don't buy all this talk about how the Angels are worse than they were last year. Sure they lost Teixeira and K-Rod, but they did pretty good without Tex, and Frankie is just a closer. Anderson will be missed, but I usually miss him most of the season anyway.

Good thing he wasn't allowed to play for the Dominican Republic in the WBC, because I don't know if his poor little millionaire heart could take the Netherlands (a European team) beating him. biggrin.gif

I saw the Netherlands/Puerto Rico game and the second DR game, and their pitching was pretty damn impressive. But they haven't got a lot of offense, even though they were able to beat Marmol in the 11th last night, so I think they're going to have a hard time in the coming round.

Mainland Marauder

Aruba is emerging as a source of baseball talent like the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and as a Dutch territory Arubans play for the Netherlands in international competition.

MLB has also had a few players from Holland over the years, including Bert Blyleven who should be in the Hall of Fame IMO. The Netherlands may continue to rise to the top level in international baseball. I wonder what this might do to boost the popularity of the game in Europe as well. Italy I thought also had a good showing.

Yeah Italy did a lot better than I had thought, I was rooting for them and the USA. The Nederlands were also a surprise, how they beat the DR is beyond me. I hope the USA can take Dice-K and Japan, it'd nice for the states to bring home the WBC title, I hope Korea wins their game 'cause I don't wanna us to have to play Venezuela.

Also anybody get a look at Pedro Martinez? The dude put up some good numbers, I'm surprised no one has given him a deal yet

At least they made it to the semis this year. I didn't get to watch it because my power was out. Of all days for the neighborhood to have a black out, it was the day that I had both a hockey game and baseball game I wanted to watch (only scheduled to happen twice more this year, probably not going to happen until next spring)

Anyway, the Angels are still on top of the spring training standings. I haven't watched/listened to a game in a while. April 6th couldn't come sooner.

EDIT: Oh, and Curt Schilling retired today. I might not have loved the Red Sox the past few years, but Schilling is a great player and one of the most honest players in the game. He really made me like him when he started bluntly speaking out against steroids.

The first thing I thought about Schilling when he started speaking out as he did was "he who protest too much..." but he's never been tied to anything and I think he's clean. Question now is his Hall of Fame credentials, which thankfully can be judged without any ties to steroids having to be considered.

Astros win 3-2 in Houston over the Cubbies. 'Stros are undefeated when Roy Oswalt doesn't start, ha.

Oh, and new poll. ph34r.gif

Interleague play, huh? I like it. Wouldn't say I love it. But I do like to see the Angels play the Dodgers, A.K.A. The Freeway Series. And I wouldn't mind seeing Frankie Rodriguez play in Anaheim again, even if it is for the Mets.

Man, that's f*cked up. Only his first start of the season and he gets killed the next day. Was shocked when I heard this.

Brings me back to the same instance where Donte' Stallworth killed a person when he was drunk, the other way around. But that's football, anyway.

Tonight was an emotional rollercoaster. Started out with the mourning of Adenhart. A moment of silence that had many people teary eyed, many people flat out bawling. Signs filled Angels' stadium, the number 34 was posted on the outfield and drawn into the backside of the mound, under which starting pitcher Jared Weaver wrote the initials N.A. The game started, and the team really came through, the thought of Nick Adenhart on top of everybody's mind. Really glad to see them come through like that, and win one for Nick.

And only a quarter mile away the Ducks had a similar night, with a tribute to Adenhart, and then they went on to clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

So they launched a new HD sports channel in Australia, now I get 5 live MLB games a week, plus however many replays they can fit in.

I saw the Diamondbacks beat the Carindals 7-6 last night, and the first full game I watched was one of the Padres' wins against the Dodgers.

Right now I'm on a search for a team to support. I <3 the Coyotes in the NHL but don't feel the same way about the DBacks, so idk.

The obvious no's are the big name teams, the ones with douchebag fans and the ones with douchebag players. I like teams which are more often than not underdogs, win against big teams, might win division or league pennants every so often, but World Series' just out of their grasp.

Any suggestions? biggrin.gif

haha, I watched the same game Jay. I'm loving this new channel.

I've been a big supporter of the Cardinals for a while now though. When I use to have cable TV, I watched quite a bit of MLB. St. Louis was the team I took a likening to. Great sport it is. I'd love to attend a game one day.

Haha maybe you should support the Chicago Cubs. They win a division title, have the best record in baseball, and then get swept in 3 games in the first round lol. If you like teams that make a push for a WS but in the end choke then they are your team lol.

The Marlins and Tampa Bay are underdogs who are pretty good too. Alot of young talent who dont ask for much money and just go out and play the game the right way.

That describes the Angels, as well (actually the Angels had the best record in baseball last year. Cubs=97 wins and Angels=100 wins). Except the Angels lost in four games.

Attorney General

Gotta love his ERA of 35 through three starts, eh Runey?

He should bounce back, though. He's a solid pitcher and he'll probably return to form soon. Maybe it's just something simple like his mechanics are off a bit. Who knows?

I'll tell you one thing though, it's nice to see aging vets like Pettite and Posada playing well as they just as easily could have shown a little wear and tear this year. And holy hell, has Nick Swisher been a kickass pickup for them or what? I think he's already hit four or five homers in 12 games!

So yeah, I'm not too worried about the slow start. Us Yankee fans are used them by now. It's par for the course. They seem to tread water for a month or two before going on a surge. Plus, I heard that A-Rod should be back soon. Once he shakes off the rust, he'll no doubt be a nice boost to the middle of their lineup.

The only Yankees game I've seen, I think it was Chamberlain that was the starting pitcher? And then he self destructed and they brought on this Coke fellow in like the 4th inning. I think it was one of the first games of the Cleveland trip to NY.

idk how the New Yankee Stadium could have cost so much. The amenities and stuff (like that gaudy stone on the exterior) must be top notch. Anyone been there to confirm this?

ed: looks like it wasn't because they spent money on the seating plan

The Angels are blowing April. They usually do, though. Last year was a fluke of an April. Four of their starting pitchers are injured, Vladdy is injured with a torn pectoral muscle. All of which are looking to come back before the mid point of next month. Oh well, I got the NHL playoffs to watch.

EDIT: That's funny about the obstructed view.

Interleague play, hmm.

I had a read about that last week, and I was surprised that it's only been going around for a little while. In Australia there aren't divisions or anything, so in a regular season every team plays each other at least once (I suppose that's what happens when your mainland is the size of the US with the population of Texas) but I digress.

There's big ups and big cons as well. I like the idea of local derbies (Mets v Yankees, Cubs v Sox, etc) and teams playing against each other for the first time in 80+ years, and really big teams like Boston playing for the first time at really famous ballparks like Wrigley Field. But I suppose you can argue it takes the mystique out of opponents from different leagues, and newer teams without that history having little incentive to embrace interleague play.

Still, I'm for it.
