Well.. still no call back, I'm wondering if I'm being dicked around here or what? Talked to 5 different people, was told the issue would be resolved yesterday and I've still not received a call back. This kind of sh*t is exactly how I figured I would get treated, a big f*ck you to GFWL and MS. I'm never buying a GFWL title again.

I came to a response from Rockstar

I quote

Hello, The basic DVD version of the game should not have any limitations on it's number of installs, you could install it on as many computers as you want as long as you only play one at a time (the disk must be in the drive) But come on-line distribution companies have limited the number of install and activations you can use. If you have purchased the game in this way you will need to speak with the supplier to increase the number of activations you have available to you. Kind regards Rocksatr Games Tech Support

Well, this is a complete ugly creatures. I'm just in shock. I have no words.

Still isn't resolved. GFWL is giving me the runaround saying I need to contact Rockstar to get this properly fixed. Even though I've read Microsoft can authorize new keys. What a crock of sh*t.

ouch.. =[

seems that microsoft/games for windows live never actually thought this activation problem over... wait was yours retail or online bought?

if it was retail, it is certainly a disgrace and they have admitted themselves that there should be no further problems with retail.

btw, why's there some spelling mistakes in the response? lol.

Yes, I bought in the retail DVD Box

By the way I live in Russia.

Other words: nothing so I wrote in Support Rockstar, they responded to me, please contact me and I asked and they answered me the same type of contact Rockstar and Microsoft, at Microsoft, I replied sadly not Live is supported in Russia but on this issue better, please contact [email protected] but the mail does not work.

Here is the sh*t.

sorry my bad English

Is it an international or a localized release? Because, if it's local, it might have a limited number of activations.

The issue has nothing to do with Securom, every single GFWL titled game has a limited number of installs VIA GFWL. Once you hit that limit you can no longer sign in, and for a game like GTAIV that means no more multiplayer.

Yes I had a case when the key is blocked SecuRom and I could not activate to play the game, but Support SecuRom quickly answered how to fix it unnecessarily for this game no limit activation to do so:

1) In Windows go to the "cmd"

2) Add rd /s "%APPDATA%\SecuROM"

3) Answer "Y" (Yes)

This does not apply to the activation of xLive.

LOL So, it's a trust system.

I just assumed they would check the IP address.

I just posted a new topic on this same issue, but I'm not going to go through the hassle of getting it fixed. f*ck R* and f*ck MS. Never again will I buy sh*t from these 2 companies.

EDIT: Another thing is, can anyone point me to where it says I'm only allowed to activate a gfwl title 10 times. Such crucial information and I can't find it anywhere. F*ckin BS.

What's the f*cking point of revoking if gfwl is going to screw me. Leave it to ms to f*ck me.

It's not Rockstar's doing, it's all Microshaft pulling a fast one on EVERYONE.

Revoking only works with securom, which is what Rockstar included with the game, unfortunately no one spread the word around enough that Microshaft included their own protection with Live, a login limit if you will. Format enough times and log in to that particular Live game each time (and this is ONLY with Live) and your key becomes unusable through Live.

Are you serious? That means all your GFWL would be USELESS, UNPLAYABLE ONLINE?!

Is Microsoft retarded?

I feel your anger Astyanax.

I mean, PC gamers have been going fine and out of nowhere, these activation/install limitations come up to protect against "piracy." BS, they're pirating our money by doing this. Pirates are stealing BACK WHAT THEY STOLE FROM US.

I haven't gotten this issue yet, i hope you get it fixed because i might do the same thing you did 1 day and could be doomed for good.

I remembered the first time i heard about "Activation" in games. The hair on the back of my neck stood up for 10 seconds. I thought, "A world of sh*t is gonna come for legit PC users."

Seriously how f*cking hard is it to tie a cdkey to an email instead of this bs. I'd love to play some mp but there's no way i'm going to buy the game again. I'm still pissed at R* too for letting MS do this and screw their customers.

So Astyanax did calling them do anything? From the research I did it appears MS is turning people away.

So I broke down and went and grabbed shadowrun for $6. MS really needs to add a revoke option if they're going to do sh*t like this. I have a feeling they'll fix it so we can't use key's from other games.

Yes, there is nothing written on game's manual or EULA about this activation. Microsoft really sux, they must do something.

Not a thing, I was getting the runaround big time until one of their reps called me asking if I had gotten anywhere with Rockstar, I finally said f*ck it and told her that Microsoft has to fix this issue as it's a GFWL problem and not Rockstars issue. She obviously declined, but quickly changed her attitude when I told her that on the GFWL official forums I had read that MS can assign new keys to people with this issue. Unfortunately this went NO WHERE. She said I'd get a call back after she researches the problem, 15 minutes later I talked to the 6th person who told me the same thing I had been hearing all along "We're looking into it". Two hours later a 7th person calls me up and says the same thing, it's been nearly a week with no response.

FYI guys, I've had this issue for 2 months now, and my support ticket with MS is probably about a month old by now.

Also if any of you run into this issue, save yourself the hassle. Go to Amazon.com and buy the club for $5 and use the CDKey from that to play GTAIV. Any live game's CD Key will let you log into your game as long as it isn't currently in use.

It should, I had a club CD Key I used once which allowed me to log into GTAIV finally.

I think someone mentioned that this issue was not present in the EULA, technically speaking isn't it illegal for them to do this if it's not listed in the EULA?

Yes, this is illegal. They must tell this limit on manual or EULA. They are cheating people with hidden protection an DRM. We must fight for our rights. Also developers dont know this limit, I have Dawn of War 2 for PC, and some people got same error on that game too, and Relic said there is no activation limit in our game. Very funny, Microstupid isnt telling this limit to developers also.

Are you logging into Live each time? Securom isn't the issue here, Live is.

Maybe I should bring that up the next time MS calls for the 10th time to tell me they are "looking into this".

EDIT: Just got off the phone with MS, got my new key.

I asked the guy about the install limit, he told me that there isn't one. This only happens when logging into multiple accounts with the same key. The only problem is I have one Live account, and I've only logged into that one account.

Nice, glad they finally did something. It still doesn't explain why it happened to me seeing as I only use one account.

I'm thinking the next time we format our hard drives or reinstall GTA we should make a backup of the xlive folder in "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft." That's for XP I've never used vista so I can't say where the xlive folder will be located. I'm guessing this is where our account info is being stored.
