Key Exceeded? ROCKSTAR PLEASE RESPOND

Nearly two weeks ago I contacted Rockstar's Support VIA their webpage. NO RESPONSE YET. I am highly disappointed with this, I have been shuffled around from Microsoft to Rockstar and I am getting very displeased with this current situation:

I have been going through some pc troubles as of recent. Been having to format often and many of the times with GTAIV installed. I recently got new hard drives thinking my problem was finally resolved, until I realized it was not. So now I've gone and bought a new processor and motherboard, which seemed to fix my problem. Once I got my PC up and running to it's fullest again I went to install GTAIV. The game installed and activated fine, I went to launch the game and log into Windows Live, in doing so I was prompted with this message: Can't sign in because you've exceeded the usage allowed by your product key. Please enter another product key.

So apparently even though Rockstar has stated there is unlimited activations Microsoft doing their usual crap went behind EVERYONES back putting a limit on installations themselves. I feel cheated, I will no longer buy G4WL titles and Rockstar has not responded to my support email which is coming up to two weeks without notice. I have had this issue for roughly a month, and after contacting the live support twice I have gotten no where so I tried my luck with Rockstar hoping I'd get somewhere, obviously that wasn't wise considering it was my horrible luck that got me into this mess in the first place. The first time contacting MS Live support the guy actually told me I should be playing the game on the 360, not on PC. This is down right awful and I seriously hope Rockstar sets Microsoft straight on the bullsh*t they are trying to pull here, who gave them the right to go around everyone and put their own install limit in? I don't even see it anywhere in writing that they actually do this.

If any rockstar supportee's actually read my post and are wondering what email I used when contacting support.. it's a different one than listed in my profile here. For personal reasons I can give it out privately as I don't want to risk getting spammed posting it.

I really do hope this gets resolved. I don't necessarily blame Rockstar here, as it's clearly MS pulling a fast one on everyone. I did do some searching and it seems tons of people have this issue and it's not just in GTAIV, games like Fallout 3, Halo 2 and Shadowrun have this exact same issue. I wouldn't be surprised if every G4WL title had Bill Gates pop up in the corner and say: "Surprise! We own your game, not you dipsh*t!"

I will move this to trouble shooting but right now your best course of action is to contact Rockstar directly you can find details here :-

http://support.rockstargames.com/cgi-bin/r...va=&p_sp=&p_li=

That's exactly what I've done, and as of Thursday this week I believe it will have been two weeks without notification. I have had this issue for over a month now.

I read somewhere that there is a maximum of 5 activations, look

https://support.securom.com/rockstarunlock/

and see if the revocation tool might help you out.

Oh and I doubt this is Microsoft's doing, I wonder when people stop bashing Microsoft ever chance they get.

My problem is not with Securom, its with Games for Windows Live. The game itself activates fine, but when I log into Games for Windows Live I get the error message. Read here if you don't believe me: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960480 Also if your willing to read up type "G4WL exceeded error" in google and check it out.

Sorry I indeed did not read properly, so it is safe to asume, that if you would not login to live, you can play the game allright. Then indeed this might be Microsoft's doing.

To bad they apparently don't take your complaint seriously, I always try and call in such cases and don't rely on email, as that usually proves to be utterly useless.

To that annoyed other poster, calm down, it's late here, simply misread, nothing to get worked up about. At least I took the time to help the OP.

Obviously, but there would be no need as I play with UAC off in Vista.

@sjaak327: Yes I can still play but I do not get the achievement points for achievements I earn and generally when buying a game such as this I do plan to play Multiplayer... Which I cannot do now.

let me guess this as you said you have reformated lots of times...

every time did you reformat with gtaIV still installed?

as they might of blacklisted the key as been stolen or been shared.. like one has said try the revoke tool...

1 Time I forgot to uninstall it, but what does uninstalling have to do with logging onto Windows Live, Do I have to say it in bold and large letters for you? The game activates fine, when I log into Windows Live after launching the game I get the error.

It revokes the activation through Securom, what Im saying is Microsoft added their own activation through Games For Windows Live.

What good is revoking the securom activation when it's already activated and it's not the problem? I don't think you understand what my problem actually is. Pull up google and type "G4WL key exceeded" and read up.

I actually did, and some posts seem to believe that revocation of the key actually MIGHT work, at least I would give it a try, even though it seems remotely related, you never know, at least trying that doesn't take two weeks...

I've done it several times already, I have afterall had this problem for over a month now. And in my previous post I wasn't referring to you.

Like I said, games like Fallout 3, Halo 2, and Gears of War have this issue. Obviously Fallout 3 and Gears don't have activation so securom is not at fault here. Especially when the error is popping up when signing into Live.

I'm not sure what reply I as a mod of the forums should make.  The reason for the error is straightforward, it is a verbose error message.  The number of activations has been exceeded.  If you have installed it a large number of times, or it is currently installed on another PC, you will get this error.  You will need to contact support (which I am not, as much as I try to support people) and see about getting a new key.

I have contacted Rockstar support nearly two weeks ago and have yet to receive a reply. I am just a LITTLE bit angered over the fact that I haven't been able to sign on for over a month, as I'm sure you can understand.

hmmm... i just thought of something...

you still got your old hardware? install it and revoke it from that... since somewhere it tells you to do that

https://support.securom.com/rockstarunlock/...ex.php?c=revoke

see near the top

No I don't have the old hardware anymore, I doubt it would work anyway as this is an issue with G4WL in general not just GTAIV.

If you have another GFWL game... you can use that key...maybe for temporal solution, while they give you a new one... cause the should...

Like I said I had computer issues, and I did format frequently but I only forgot to uninstall GTAIV once. Even after that one time it activated afterwards and let me log in, mind you that was the last time. Since games like Gears of War, Fallout 3, Lost Planet, Halo 2 and Shadowrun all have this issue I doubt it has anything to do with Securoms activation, like I said the game itself activates fine when I go to launch it for the first time, once the game is running and I hit the Home button to log into Live I get the error after entering my login details. I don't get why your still on about it being a securom issue when someone else has already replied having the issue in a different game that does not have securom activation.

I'm almost tempted to buy The Club for $10 and just use that key for now, atleast then I could log in for a change.

I haven't posted there but I have read plenty of posts, all of which are just mixed opinions with mods more or less saying the usual too bad so sad routine...

Some say call MS, others say MS says call the developer while others say they got refused by one or the other. Its starting to seem hopeless.
