My Game Keeps Freezing

Recommended Posts

MC.

I have the Greatest Hits version of GTA: Vice City and whenever I try to drive to the Vercetti Estate on Starfish Island to get a Sea Sparrow, my game freezes. There is also no traffic around either. It's like a freakin' ghost town so there's no vehicles driving around. I tried out GTA: San Andreas in my PS2 and it didn't freeze at all. GTA: Vice City usually freezes now about 5 to 10 minutes later once I load the game.

Should I clean the disk? If so, what method do you suggest on cleaning it with? Should I use alcohol prep pad? Or should I just get another copy of the game? Does the freezing have something to do with the game save on the memory card?

My criminal rating is at Don (544000+) and now it's going to be freakin' impossible to continue. Please help. sad.gif

I had this problem too with the Greatest hits version. My original copy plays fine, but cheating does make the game glitch and freeze up.

I'm not too sure he's cheated, judging by his high criminal rating.

It sounds to me like it might be a faulty disc, or a programming fault. The chances of the latter being the case are slim, because, I assume, you've been playing the game with the same disc for a fair while now?

If your disc is dirty or scratched, I don't see what harm cleaning it can do, providing you use the correct stuff. You'll be able to purchase a PS2 Disc cleaner and scratch repair kit from various online stores, and I'm fairly certain that gaming stores sell them too (I bought one a fair while ago from a Game shop), as well as various other stores. I'm not too sure whether or not Gaming stores have disc resurfacing kits, so it might be a good idea to venture out and query them.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think the freezing has anything to do with your save file. Have you tried saving your game in a separate slot, then loading that save file up to see if the freezing problem occurs? That way you can be really sure as to whether the issue is only on your save game, or if it has something to do with your disc.

Moved to Troubleshooting.

If you have to replace the game disk, make sure you replace it with a compatible version... there are 3 different versions out there for PS2 and they are not compatible with each other....

As long as you get a "greatest hits" version, you should be ok... you do not want the original or the early double pack version (III & VC)-- there is a later (released) double pack version that is ok but I'd avoid it if possible (so you know you won't get the incompatible version)

this thread has some info I pieced together about different versions (just in case you need it)--

To add to what Spuds said, if you have to replace the disc, make sure it is the greatest hits version or the Triple pack version. I have confirmed that the triple pack versions of 3, VC and SA are compatible with the Greatest Hits saves. My PS2 VC disc was scratched(I had the greatest hits version at the time), and when I went to Wal-Mart, all they had was the Triple Pack version for the PS2, so I got that(marked down from $29.98 to $9.98, btw), and when I put the game in the PS2 and started it, it loaded my last save perfectly and did the same for 3 and SA. But that is the main reason, mostly on the PS2/3, that I use multiple save slots, so if one messes up, I got a backup at hand. Hope thid helps.

Also, I thought the double pack version (3 and VC) was only available on the X-box/360?

But the Original PS2 release is NOT compatible with the later release saves, just like the Steam version for PC is not compatible with the Original store bought(CD) version of the game. So as long as you don't get the Original PS2 release, you will be just fine replaceing it, and as I mentioned, you can get the triple pack version(3,VC and SA) for as low as $9.98.

I started a new game and the traffic actually spawns. It also does not freeze at all.

The saving in another slot part, I have no more space. Unless you mean to overwrite a file?

I assumed you would have had a spare slot to save your game again, I didn't realise you'd used up all eight. Then you could have saved your current game in a new slot, loaded that file up and checked to see if the same issue occured. If you have a save file slot you don't necessarily want, you can always overwrite it if you wish, and then give this a go.

It's always a good idea, when you have a game which has acheived something of high magnitude (like your criminal rating), that you create another save game slot for that particular file. I learnt the hard way, when I had a 100% save file, with multiple high records and a fairly decent criminal rating (one which I was working on!), and I had to re-start from scratch because the file got corrupted. Now, when I get to a certain point in the game, I'll save it on my current slot, then save it again in a new slot, just in-case. It's a handy tip for future reference.

Does your game only freeze when you're on Starfish Island? Or simply after a certain period of time, no matter where you are? Is there no traffic anywhere in the entire game?

No, I mean have 3 slots used but the other slots are empty. I can't save in the empty slots because my memory card is full.

Yeah the game starts to freeze when I drive on Starfish Island for a while. There is no traffic anywhere in the game.

Ah, gotcha. Have you had a look around for a PS2 Disc cleaner and scratch repair kit (I typed those exact words into Google and found multiple results)? If you can't find one online, or don't want to purchase one online, as I've mentioned, take it to your local gaming store. They should have one, and might clean it for you (at a small fee). Also, My local Video rental store has this kit, and they clean discs at a small fee as well. Seriously, there's no harm in trying.

If worse comes to worse, you might have to re-purchase the game, but make sure you take on board what Spuds and radioman have mentioned. You don't want to spend money on a game that isn't compatible.
