blackinskunk
Hi, I have the same problem (stuttering) but there's a new patch 1.0.3 for the game, I would like to know if some of you are still having this problem after installing the patch PD: I have read about this problem in another topic in GTAforums and the guy that opened the topic came to the conclusion that maybe the stuttering is due to RAM (if you have 1 or 2 G of RAM, you need to upgrade to 3 or 4) and that the difference between 2 and 3 RAM is very noticeable
e575fho
I have patch 1.3 and the memory leak is still there. I have the Logitech G15 and when i start the game the Lcd screen shows ram @ 49% . After an hour or so it has crept up to 87%. Alt tab and commandline does nothing for me Edited March 31, 2009 by e575fho
Soho
excellent...181.22 did it for me.i've been play for 3 hours and smooth...finally 2560x1600...high texture How to get back to 181.22?
Nick the Newb
Maybe it's VRAM leak and R* is too STUPID to do jack sh*t about it. Get new coders or something R* The problem still persists with the new patch. VRAM leak = YOU, the owner of the game, CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO FIX IT. R* HAS TO FIX IT BECAUSE IT'S IN THE PROGRAMING. Nick the Newb
I'M GOING TO CAPS EVERYTHING. PEOPLE IN THIS FORUM HAVE A TENDENCY TO NOT READ EVERYTHING PRECISELY. MY PROBLEM: STUTTERS IF I USE THE FOLLOWING IN THE COMMANDLINE TEXT -norestrictions -availablevidmem 2 OTHERWISE, IT'S ALL HUNKY DORY. RUNS LIKE 75 FPS WITHOUT THAT COMMANDLINE TEXT. IF I LEAVE OUT THE " -availablevidmem 2" I'D GET HORRIBLE MISSING TEXTURES AT "HIGH" TEXTURES, WHICH IS WHAT I WANT TO PLAY ON. THIS IS BECAUSE I EXCEED MY VRAM. THIS GUY HERE (SERIOUSLY, WATCH IN HD FOR THE FIRST 20 SEC OF IT): HE HAS HIS SETTINGS OVER TWICE HIS VRAM AND HE GETS NO MISSING TEXTURES?! WHY IS IT NOT HAVING MISSING TEXTURES?! THIS GUY HERE (SERIOUSLY, WATCH IN HD FOR THE FIRST 20 SEC OF IT SO YOU CAN SEE HIS SETTINGS): yah, he gets no missing textures AND Exceeds resources. I GET missing textures when I Exceed resources. I get BETTER FRAME when i exceed resources, however, but the game stutters like sh*t. Seriously, R* needs to fix this. I don't like playing games with ugly graphics. Nick the Newb
IT'S CONCLUSIVE! I've checked with memturbo, so it's no RAM leak. I alt-tab out of game and go back in, it runs 30 fps faster, then drops down to 20 later on (with unbearable stuttering). Therefore, it's VRAM leak. HOLY sh*t, F*CK YO R*, YOUR PROGRAMMING (and hence your programmers) IS INFERIOR! GET NEW PROGRAMMERS U IDIOTS. I'm awesome. Anyway, gotta find a way to fix VRAM leak, which is really really really hard to. I don't know if there's even a fix.
evanwier
Nick, thanks for doing the legwork for most of us experiencing the identical things as you. I have a q6600 @ 3.2 and a 9800gx2 4gb etc etc, and I get the exact same issues, I can run for 30-1hr~ all on high with perfect fps, then it just dies, stutters like mad to the point where I cannot play at all, I then have to restart the game and try again, every 45 minutes rinse and repeat. If you get anywhere with a solution for this, let me know, it would be much appreciated.
evanwier
UPDATE I have no rolled back to Nvidia 181.22 drivers as I have seen in a couple threads, it has fixed 100% of my issues, I can now play hours on all-high settings iwth no lag, before I could play maybe an hour on low-medium. So you downgraded the driver and it worked perfectly? Maybe there's some flaw with the new drivers, or maybe GTA 4 just doesn't like the new drivers. I have tried the drivers yet, that's b/c i'm busy or i'm too afraid to do so. But, if everyone who comes here would try it for me, download and run GTA 4 on ALL HIGH with the " -norestrictions" command and see if you get stutters. Until it's proven that the driver works well with high graphics, i'll just wait it out for Cockstar to release another patch.
evanwier
Just did that for you, playing on all high with 40-70FPS average, no stutters after 1 hour of play.... I used the nvidia driver uninstaller, restarted and simply installed the 181.22 drivers from January and quite literally has solved everything with GTAIV for me, I really suggest giving it a try for the 20 minutes of trouble it is. I feel like i'm heading towards the right direction on fixing this problem with your help!!!!!!!!1 Ok, a few things i need to know from you before i mark this hellish, burdensome problem solved. So, before the driver 181.22, you had " -norestrictions" and boosted graphics to all high and there stutters, correct? After, you got patch 181.22 installed, you did the same thing (noretrictions and stuff) and max out graphics, no stutters, for 1 hr as u said, right? What patch of GTA 4 are you using? What's your RAM specification (mine is 4GB DDR 2 800MHz, be more specific about the RAM)? How much VRAM (Video Memory) do you have? In the GTA 4 graphics menu, what are your resources used vs. your available resource? (xxx/xxx, mine says 852/866, i used -availablemem 1.7, i have a 512MB video crad)

evanwier
sh*t sorry man I just assumed you tried it out heh. evanwier
Quick note, I am in the middle of driver cleaning and going to the Nvidia beta drivers 185.66 released April 3rd to find out of they happen to run as well as 181.22, I will be posting a new thread if successful in that, so keep your eyes out. PROBLEMZ SOLVED, HOLY sh*t, IN LIKE WHAT? 1 1/2 month? R* is stupid, suck more please. Get pirated more please (i hope u go bankrupt because u suck at programming). Cry more R*.Use more Windows Live. Use moe Securom <--some say SecuRom is also a factor in stuttering. Can you believe it?! Nick the Newb
ok, i've downloaded the 181.22 driver. And you know what? Last time with the 182.50 driver, 85% of the time, i'd get stutters, now it's 5% of the time. This 5% is due to my stupid, retarded, slowa$$ 800MHz RAM, but that's ok, it only stutters for 1 sec (duh!, loading time, every comp needs it, unless u got DDR3 RAM), instead of 5-20 minutes like the last time. I knew it had something to do with the Video Card, and i was right. Well, 181.22 is performing GREAT for me right now. I'm now replaying all missions to see if i get stutters in cutscenes. Does anyone know why v181.22 driver for Nvidia works better w/ GTA 4 than the newest driver, 182.50? Is it because Nvidia doesn't care about GTA 4 or something? Or maybe GTA 4 is just problematic? evanwier
Heyo nick, I've heard good things about the nvidia beta drivers. 185.xx fixing problems as well, maybe worth a shot. Nick the Newb
Thanks Evanwier, I'll try it. Well, GTA is like this f*cking chain of problem. First it started with the stutter. After i fix the stutter with the 181.22 driver, there comes this crash. The crash occurs every 1-2 hours. It happens like this: every 1-2 hours, the game would freeze. everything stops. I can't use Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+F4 or any other get-out-of-a-program-while-it-crashed methods. I hope the 185.xx drivers will fix this. It's late right now and i'm going to sleep. Trying tomorrow and will report back on results.
Nick the Newb
Tried driver 185.20, crashed. Not much stutters though. kinda like 8-10% stutters trying driver 185.68.
LiBertyB
Thats all well and good for nvidia users, anyone got anything on ATI Drivers that maybe the problem? im using the catalyst 9.4's and im still stuttering. mines wierd tho, al stutter at the start of the game, but as i move around more it does it less. IE= if i drive around the block it will lag, but if i go around the same block a second or third time it seems to decrease in stuttering!!! Any clues? Ur problem is the ATI graphics card, i'm not very well with them. As for ur RAM, u could try to get DDR 3 RAM and it'll prolly save all ur trouble with stutters. Ok, my report: Driver 185.68 CAUSED STUTTER >>>>>AGAIN<<<<< So far, the scope of NON-STUTTER Drivers for Nvidia are: 180.84 (i haven't tested, causes slow-downs on OTHER Games), 181.22, and 185.20 185.66 is the same as 185.68, therefore, it causes stutters as well. 185.68= just a little fix for Riddick: Dark Athena. LiBertyB
Cheers for the insight nick, but I shelled out £370 for my card, so im not really going to replace it for the sake of one game. al just have to hang on and see if R* could fix the problem. Thx anyway for the reply
gto221
I turns out that aawservice.exe was causing stuttering problems for me. aawservice.exe is a windows service for adaware. You could probably set the service to manual or just uninstall adaware if it still causes problems for you.
arongooch
Excellent stuff I had this problem with GTA IV aswell and is now fixed with the 181.22 Nvidia driver! Nick the Newb
The stutters i'm having is mostly due to memory leaks. Since i run the game on all highest, it uses my RAM, and with a 9800 GTX+ 512MB, it's not enough to suffice the "high" textures that i require it to process along with the "highest" settings for everything else and uber high resolution. R* is too stupid to optimize the game to run with your RAM, therefore it "leaks" and causes nasty-as* stutters over time. The only way to stop the stutter is to buy a better graphic card w/ more VRAM. Trust me when i say DDR3 memory makes your game run like God's computer. It does! Check out this benchmark that i got for upgrading to DDR3 memory. Statistics Average FPS: 53.23 Duration: 37.08 sec CPU Usage: 70% System memory usage: 97% Video memory usage: 54% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1280 x 1024 (75 Hz) Texture Quality: High Texture Filter Quality: Highest View Distance: 100 Detail Distance: 100 Hardware Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+ Video Driver version: 190.38 Audio Adapter: Realtek HD Audio output AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor File ID: Benchmark.cli Look at that godly frames and godly settings. But hey, guess what, the frames won't stay this way. It'll die out due to stutters caused by unoptimized RAM usage otherwise known has a "memory leak." There's nothing i can do except to blame Rocksh*t's inferior programing. MEMORY LEAKS ARE INHERENT IN THE SOFTWARES, NOT THE HARDWARES, R* SUX AT PROGRAMMING! Anyway, the other way to stop some of the stutter (many Nvidia users favor this way, though it doesn't help much) is to get new drivers, and that's the best you can do. But, for me, I'd just stick with the newest drivers instead of those old beta ones because i have better games to play than GTA 4, and i wanna run them fast. Though the graphics is good, GTA 4's performance is sh*t. Shame on Rocksh*t. You should eat your own sh*t. Nick the Newb
HOLY SH*T! HOLY SH*T! READ BELOW TO KNOW HOW I REMOVED 99.99%, if not all, STUTTERS!!!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- News this good deserves a story and a completely new post. Ok, here goes. So I was investigating my computer's temperature to see how hot it runs. Well, i downloaded this software called GPU-Z for graphics card temp and Core Temp for CPU temp. So i was playing Crysis, and the GPU temperatures went to 60C and CPU 48C on all highest. Well, at that time i had Vsync off and i thought that vsync would stress my video card, so i turned it on to see another temperature test. To my amazement, with Vsync ON, the temps are: GPU 47C & CPU 47C. I was like, "dayum...." I've never been a good friend w/ Vsync because it tones down my fps from about 120-500 to 60-70 on many games. So, now , i turned on GTA 4 and played with Vsync ON. Temp was REALLY LOW, as i expected (GPU 49C & CPU 49C, compared to it off GPU 62C & CPU 51C). As I've seen, there is NO DIFFERENCE in FPS between Vsync off and on, but your eyes can only see about 60 fps so who cares. Anyway, once Vsync is on, GTA 4 ran the benchmark w/ the same high stats as the above post, but the fps is about the same, which is 53.41. Ok, now knowing that my GPU will stay cool during GTA 4 gameplay while Vsync is on, i go and test to see if this has any effects on stuttering (I thought it was a long shot, and hell, it was f*cking worth it). I got 6 stars and used the ak-47 rocket launcher mod and blew the streets into hell. I did this for 1 hour. That's 1 hour of heavy explosion. Regularly, after such heavy explosions, this causes stuttering when you drive fast in a car. BUT, somehow, when Vsync is ON, I got into my Infernus and drove off. NO F*CKING STUTTER, AT ALLLLL!!!!!! The End, Thank you to the awesome Nick. *claps* I love myself so much. LONG STORY SHORT: Turn on Vsync and no stutterz <-- nobody knew about this(at least they didn't tell me)???? wtf? Oh yeah, I love myself. Edited July 29, 2009 by Nick the Newb
