Whose Idea Was it?

Recommended Posts

Please don't take this to be another "Why isn't it for Ps3/PC" Though I am upset as a Ps3 owner, that's not what this is about.

I'm just wondering, GTA IV was in production at around the same time as Vice City Stories for the PsP (As far as I can remember) and Rockstar has stated that they were planning for DLC's right from the get-go, so this has to be when VCS was confirmed for the PsP. It's obvious that they were planning two DLC's because you can see the numerous hints in Niko's story, so my question is this:

Whose idea was it?

Was it Rockstar's idea from the beginning, meaning that they had planned to release it for all three systems because if it was their idea there's no way they would have favored just one system.

Or was it Microsoft's idea? Were they the ones that approached Rockstar and pitched it to them before the story was written and that's when they decided to have three intertwining plots? And of course that would explain why they laid down the $50 million.

As a fan of GTA, I'm just wondering...

Guess it was Microsoft, they knew GTAIV was going to be a big game, so they paid them for the DLC.

I have heard a few different things about this.

We've all heard the whole MS paid R* to keep it exclusive but I've also that R* approached Sony and asked them if they would pay to have it platform exclusive to the PS3. However that is purely a rumour a rumour and the first is much more likely. Microsoft are smart and know how popular the game is.

worked on IV since VC 1 was finished. Since SA was started, really. Mission Packs have been around since gta1, and the game is still nowhere near where they hope to bring it. That said, the idea is as old as dirt - it's called expansions. Valve started calling it episodes in the commercial game world after the indie devs that release through steam and other digital distributors had to make only episodes to be able to create products and ship products without going broke while developing products. Now even commercial games cost so much to make, the commercial industry is forced to do this to compete with more pushy entities like EA without getting to big - no game company wants to be 'too big' (in size of employment base). Except maybe EA. lol.

Rockstar is unique in that their alternate universe locations based on real places makes perfect sense for episodes, and it's obvious that is what they wanted to do all along. All of that unused stuff was supposed to be used in San Andreas. These games were meant to be "meanwhile... at another part of town". There are modifications you can find that add new gameplay and missions without editing the vanilla game. They go in a similar place as your music shortcuts for the user music player.

If you really want the juice, it's that IV is relying more on GPU effects than CPU, even if the CPU is being pushed to its limits. Microsoft was already established with the old ways of rendering and, truth be told, the Next Generation of gaming has yet to be defined in an on-shelf release - but do not mistake: the hardware is out there and ready, just waiting.

That said, this game was developed to showcase one last time the current ways of handling graphics, and the 360 is the prime candidate for that mission. It came out early to compete with wii, a graphically behind console, though innovative in its arguable way (power glove, anyone?) while the PS3 is not to really be utilized until Microsoft's console evolves to a new SKU that supports 1080p and a new generation of processo (and either adopts Blu Ray [doubtful, it will most likely be download-only for games and movies. Netflix for your movies, gamefly will partner to distribute games... McDonalds will upload you some fries... ok, thats a bit far, but you see the pattern])

Like, it isn't time for 1080p games. There is no market for competition, it would mess sh*t up big time for the US game market. The core of the industry, not the people who buy consoles...

Blu Ray won't end up ditched, and it will be way more convenient to own one of those players. So even if you own a next-gen Xbox, you'll still want to have a blu ray player and blockbuster membership - because it will take forever to download 1080p movies compared to games that do a lot more on he CPU than they do on the GPU and in turn actually weigh less than todays games.

A lot of things touched on here, but, basically. Who's idea was the expansion? Who knows. Who's idea was episodes? Indie devs. Valve made it popular commercially and DLC was born. Who's idea was it do it in GTA? Well, it's been a feature they seem to have wanted to support since GTA1 with its expansions. Who's idea was it for it to be exclusive to XBox? Well, it's not really worth it for sony to have it right now because sony's box is sorta held back by old API style (read: Current graphics techniques) and since when are us PC gamers cared about compared to the locked-closed-shut-and-loved standards set forth by consoles, for sales, copy protection (dont get smart, 99 percent of people can not pirate a console game if their life depended on it - so feel blessed you can lol), and the ability to relax and make art instead of doing the Crytek thing and going to techical feats and pushing hardware. Consoles set a standard, developers observe it, it gives them time to be artful, it gives them a platform that they can spend more time with the product instead of the system's capabilities. XBox happens to be the one that showcases current graphics the best.

But when Nvidia drops their new sh*t that doesn't require an AMD or Intel CPU, you'll see sweeping changes in the way games are developed.

This incremental design of creating our "base engine technology then developing more games on that as we expand it" will be even more noticed. RAGE is built to last through the transition, and right now, it is shining on the current posterchild for what interactive graphics should be. As we move away from DirectX, open GL, APIs like that, frameworks, runtimes... These will be replaced with the in-house offerings from developers. It's actually kind of dangerous news if you happen to be an indie programmer.... It's much like the way they want to make bandwidth too expensive for you or I to run our own websites at the same speeds as any other website just because we're not a corporation. But this is turning into something else, and I'll end it with this:

Basically, Microsoft knows how much exclusive GTA stuff can do for a brand, and rockstar knows there were a hell of a lot more xbox units already in market before GTA IV was announced. Microsoft is glad to drop the money into a system they only plan to support for half as long as their competitor's system, and it is better to get the money now than later when they cant without a new SKU. This is all good for both sides of whatever "console war" may or may not still be going on out there in internet land. The "war" is a joke behind the scenes because both of these console companies, three if you are counting nintendo who is experimenting with the Social aspect of future media, but both of these mainliners know mutually that one is driving the industry and the other is introducing a new face for it.

I doubt the entire game was ever going to be platform exclusive, just because obviously you sell more with both. They already knew that from how well San Andreas and the Double Pack did on the original Xbox even though the PS2 had it all first.

I've always thought the exclusive DLC was a compromise with Microsoft wanting the whole game to be a 360 exclusive but Take Two not wanting to go that far.

i think R* made the game and the dlc's idea and then they asked microsoft to give them the opportunity to test there dlc's on it and for this exclusive thing microsoft payed them 50 mil $ ,so we are now testing the dlc's on the xbox and after the end of this year ,the ps3 will get it two and also the PC ... i think its something like this...i think microsoft payed R* 50 mil $ for the first 2 dlc's just because R* wanted to test them on the xbox first...and 50 mil $ is worth it

Well you think wrong and should quit altogether. It will never be on PS3. who pays 50 million to beta test a DLC that is guaranteed golden? Nobody, thats who. another fanboy has had his hopes and dreams shot down.

But i agree with most of you guys, more than likely microsoft approached rockstar about the deal.

I reckon Rockstar always considered the idea, but never really got around to doing anything about it. Then Microsoft came along, and pretty much kickstarted the whole thing with their 50 million.

Well didn't Dan or Sam (can't remember who) talk about downloadable content around the time of GTA IV's announcement? They were talking about how the DLC would be like Bully where you done all them errand missions.

That doesn't really sound to interesting to add a few random character type missions, so it could of actually been Microsoft mentioning to them about a bigger DLC pack.

Because the RN staff have not discussed the exclusive nature, I believe Sam Houser is testing the feasibility and public reaction with the premier episodic content, it is not at all ruling out the DLC in the future for any platform capable. I do believe there's no real technical hurdle at this point, but I do believe it's untried in this capacity and they are just re-inventing GTA here as it evolves

I agree and I think there could be more than two episodes in Liberty City. It lets Rockstar add detail and features without starting from scratch again.

An interview with Dan Houser suggested that they prefer to have GTA based on New York for cost reasons.

New York was just a practical decision, because we were terrified about the amount of visual research we needed to do, so we wanted to do something that was on our doorstep.

Also it takes more time to make anything in HD.

Making the graphics at that level is very time-consuming, obviously, because you’ve got a lot more detail in every single building, so the same artist can make far fewer buildings a day, so that’s why we confined it to one city.

Staying in Liberty City seems to make sense as long as it can continue to be expanded and be interesting.

Obviously, but fans waited 3 plus years, and for FANS!! That was a task as well!

I think they could try and not model after a specific city but used the elements they now are familiar with to fashion something were the geography offers much more in a closer field of game play, not to say it won't be large, but could be the size of GTA4 with more interesting things.

Back to Topic, Microsoft is like Sony in regard to GTA4, they took a decision on how to handle the product software on their hardware, it wasn't their in-house franchise and still isn't.

I feel based on the way things operate from historical perspective, the Downloadable Content (DLC) was not their idea, they just liked it enthusiastically enough to sponser it. As I pointed out with the one or the other system scenario...this could all be because programming it on joint systems was not an option...add to that the fact the Xbox learning-programming 'toolbox' came out before and in advance of the PS3, which required more engineering assistance, even to get the main game out!!

People are clearly forgetting this, and it's sad to admit, but Sony techs had to help Rockstar with the platform to get it out on time. They also had little idea the download arena would be worth the money, in regard to GTA. They may come to a new conclusion with all the backlash generated. I feel the public makes a case they can't easily ignore.

when gta4 first came out it was said that the first DLC was gonna be an xbox exclusive because microsoft bought the rights to it. i think it's either for 3 months or 6 months that it's not gonna be on the other systems.

Microsoft did the same thing for the Tomb Raider Underworld DLC - paid Eidos an incredible sum of money to make it a 360 exclusive. I don't think it's fair to the other consoles (despite the fact that I'm a 360 owner), but like I said elsewhere, it's all about money nowadays, especially with the economy in it's current state, money is all anyone wants, especially these game companies. So you can't really blame the game companies for choosing money over the fair treatment and equality to other gamers/owners of consoles not getting the content.

I'm no staff member, nor do I have the right to tell people what they can and can't do, but we should really refrain from starting a console flame war - I've seen them time and time again, and they never end well, hell if they even end at all.

That's just my opinion, agree with it or kick it out the door, just don't kill me, biggrin.gif !

Rockstar most assuredly had this planned before M$ made their deal. People will tell you that the DLC wasn't announced until just before the game was released, but I read an interview (In the Game Informer with GTA IV on the cover) that they had been planning episodic content from the conception of GTA IV. It's just unfortunate that M$ is a company of greed an unoriginal ideas. They see that R* is making the content, then spew out lots of dollars to get this content to be exclusive. It's the only way they knew they could sell their system - "Yeah, you can get GTA IV on the PS3 (which runs the game so much better), but if you want more of GTA IV, you've got to buy our version of it."

F*ck microsoft. F*ck Bill Gates. The whole company is rotten. They're so cheap that they hire people in India who can't speak any kind of clear English for their tech support people. F*cking brilliant. Those idiots on the tech support lines don't have any understanding of the subtleties of the English language, so they can't begin to fathom when I tell them that my console won't let me play my DLC without being online because their stupid retarded company can't plan enough ahead top see that their plastic crap console isn't going to last long enough to enjoy said DLC.

I very truly hope that someday soon Bill Gates will be crushed to death by a pile of his own bricked consoles and PC's.

Yeah, complete idiots will tell you that because for f*ck's sake GTA IV along with all DLC was announced at E3 2006, and then the exclusivity was stressed at X06, BOTH BEFORE THE PS3 WAS EVER RELEASED.

And yeah, we KNOOOW how much better the PS3 version always runs than the 360 multiplatform counterpart. Is that why GTA IV runs at 640p on the PS3? Too weak to handle it so they have to lower down the resolution, but that's not the point, the point is that you're the kind of idiots Sony live off who think it's 1998 and it's cool to diss Bill Gates ("LOL M$"). How about you shove that DRM-loving, rootkit installing, consumer raping, Lik Sang suing Sony dildo up your ass until you remember HOW EXCLUSIVE THE GTA STORIES WERE (AND STILL ARE) AND HOW NO XBOX OR PC OWNER WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT IT.

If you are a GTA fan like you claim, you should know that Grand Theft Auto started out on the PC, and every die-hard fan should know that the expansion packs for the ORIGINAL GRAND THEFT AUTO came out only for the PC (Microsoft DOS and Windows, to be specific), and it was only a period of time after that the original GTA and only one expansion pack (London 1969) was ported to the PlayStation 1. Rockstar Games would never had went to Sony (which by the way created a really crappy console with the PS2) if not because the Housers had ties with BMG which belonged and still belongs to Sony, and they needed music rights.

Besides, Sony's gotta owe PS2's success to GTA, mostly. GTA has done enough for their crappy console, and you gotta understand that "Business is Business"! The true die-hard Grand Theft Auto fanatics like me have already suffered enough by having to wait almost a year for games in the GTA III era to come out for the Microsoft platforms because of Sony's crappy excusivity deals, and it's only fair that we get some payback for that!

It's not surprising that Microsoft got what they deserved! They got exclusivity to the first and original Grand Theft Auto expansions, what makes anyone think that GTA IV's will be any different? And even then, they had to pay 50 Million dollars for that, and it's only downloadable content and not even the exclusivity rights to the whole game!

I feel sad for Microsoft, although I prefer Apple if they were in the core gaming scene. Some Japanese company dares to snatch away your business, and pretends to walk away later to appear as the victims! It's not money-hungry to fork out a BIG DEAL OF CASH to get back WHAT WAS YOURS! It's like forking out 50 Million US Dollars to get back your Beautiful Wife after she leaves off for a poor man with herpes, and then after that being insulted upon by the friends of that poor man to make you seem like the bad guy! Or, forking out 50 Million US Dollars to get your Lamborghini back from the garage after maintainance, and then after that a few thousand people go on your ass making seem like the garage owners are the victims!

It's not just fair for Microsoft, not fair for true, die-hard Grand Theft Auto fanatics just because you Sony fans want a piece of the action! Remember, "Business is Business" - Rockstar had to create a goddamn trailer to tell you Sony fanboys that! To Sony fanboys, if you think Sony is so great, why don't they fork out some money to get their exclusivity deals back? Because they, my friend, are the true money-hungry and selfish pricks who don't give a damn about their fans - stop being a blind follower!

And yes, I think Microsoft paid them for it.

I am not an Apple guy spitting venom at MS and Bill Gates.....

anymore

But I am also stating that the downloaded extras was an idea that Houser extolled in the press. He may have been being diplomatic with regard to not saying anything about platforms, but I only attrbute it to the idea covering the game in it's next-gen form. Time is the only real judge and jury, for this.

Two fanboys above me have plenty of venom to spit at Sony, but Sony did right many times, even though their vision was one that was headstrong, I felt they paved the way since the 1960s in high tech, and did that by having a faith in each system they were behind. That was tape and VCR in the 60s and 70s, the Walkman and Discman of the 1980s and in video and gaming in the 1990s.

The Trinitron has always been respected, one need only hear the word "Jumbotron" to know that.

The PS2 was never "crappy" that I cannot concur with or see reasoning in making that statement, I own all other consoles outside of the PS2 for the time, except Nintendos. The Dreamcast and 3DO were the real good alternatives....they didn't succeed
