Now see, its VERY hard to make a GOOD female main character.

Why?

What does Niko Bellick have some chick couldn't? He's haunted by memories from war, he kills some people, has his revenge and that's about it.

Like in Max Payne, when you got to play with Mona. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Of course, if you're supposed to work with mafia or something, they are most probably not going to get involved with a chick, but ths only opens the doors to more opportunities. They could put the emphasis on the assassin part of GTA. And if she would have to deal with mafia, it could all be done covertly, over the phone and such.

And let's drop this Mexican immigrant matter. I have nothing against Mexicans nor immigrants, but it would be great to explore some new venues. We had gangsters, gangstas, immigrant(s)... let's opt for something different, new and fresh. Like a dirty cop scenario or maybe some undercover again or some sh*t like that. Plenty of possibilities there, options for implementation of some new game mechanics. I would usually say that stuff like that doesn't fit in GTA style of game, but I think they broke the pattern with IV enough for something like this to work.

Also, by your logic you would like to see a GTA with a cowboy or an Texas ranger as a lead sooner then one with a female character. That just makes no sense.

Ok, I did not say anything about a cowboy as a main character. I'm saying theres plenty of things better than a woman character. It's just not a good direction. It's overly different, and just not realistic for like, say, the Mafia or a gang to hire a female as a hired gun. Name ONE good modern day female criminal mastermind.

Sorry, but I couldn't have read all of that, did you say that we play as a woman? But I would love the idea of the mountains.

Name ONE good modern day female criminal mastermind.

Name TWO (2) good modern day male criminal masterminds that were present in GTA up to now in the role of a lead character.

Tommy was one (sort of - he did end up like the king of the city), but the others? Give me a break. CJ or Niko or Claude as "criminal masterminds"? WTF?

The only reason why there aren't more female lead characters (besides romantic comedies, dramas and whatnot) is becasue we live on a strictly patriarchal planet. In most cases, women are required to show breasts or ass and that's all in modern day "movies".

I can't name masterminds, but I can name powerful female characters that had strong albeit sensitive roles in movies:

Sigourney Weaver in Aliens trilogy (I don't consider the fourth edition to be worthy of the first three; hence the trilogy)

Carrie-Anne Moss in Matrix trilogy

Linda Hamilton in Terminator vol. 1 and 2

Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich (not an action hero, but nevertheless)

Jodie Foster in Silence of the lambs (again, not an action character, but definitively a strong female lead)

Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi in Crouching tiger, hidden dragon (a bit abstract movie, but nevertheless)

There were some courageous chicks in roles of assassins in Smokin' Aces, can't remember their names

Also, don't forget that even in some organizations in movies and TV shows there have been some influential female characters. Like in Sopranos, when Tony goes to Sicily only to find the previous boss dead or something and a woman took over. She was more or less behind the scenes (for the reasons discussed above), but a women WAS in charge. Tony had problems dealing with it at first, but he accepted, because business is business.

The same approach could be undertaken in GTA. Why hire a female assassin? Maybe because she'll easily sneak to the target as no one will be expecting a chick? And God forbid we get some GTA where mafia is NOT involved.

Now, I enjoyed working for elizebetha torres and that yazuka chick. It was pretty realistic. I would love there to be a useful female character. But not a female protagonist. But, in GTA1 one of the characters you could play as was a girl. Therefore, its already been done. wow.gif

I don't think that girl char in GTA1 counts really, first of all it's a selectable char, and on the other hand it doesn't have any implications on the gameplay\storyline.

I'm liking mkey82's posts, and I agree, a female character would refresh the series and even cheer things up. Yeah, it would be a little strange at first, but after a while people would get used to it and start liking it more. Like what happened with CJ. I bet some people that now think he's the best GTA char simply hated the fact of playing with a black char before SA was released.

Don't forget about Nicole Horne in Max Payne. She is 50 or 60 years old, and she is part of the Government and even the head of a big corporation (Aesir Corporation), and still she was a real badass.

Saying that we should go through different backgrounds before jumping to a female protaganist is sexist. Think of all the possibilities for the story if the character were female.

OK! As a writer myself and huge fan of GTA mostly for it's story more than anything else, I would like to put my two cents in...

I know what you're trying to do with the whole futuristic, psuedo sci-fi thing with GTA. Trying to steer the game in a new direction so that the old formulated crime action/drama doesn't grow stale. A good intention no doubt but let's not forget certain events in our lifetime such as "New Coke".

This game can work, but NOT as a GTA game. It's perfect too, completely original, with a fictional location that YOU made up (except for Vice City of course and certain characters like Roman and Malorie, but things like this can easily be changed) so therefore you have complete copyright over it to create a game of your own.

If you try to change up GTA then like Coke, people will eventually start to miss, the classic feel and crime drama that GTA has always brought to the table. The reason it is somewhat repetitive is becuase it's a game. Games are meant to be contrive so that the player can engage in activities that are necessary for the gaming experience (eg. there's always an excuse for you to drive in the first few missions:

GTA IV: Roman is too drunk

SA: Ryder wants to see how you drive in the East Coast

LCS/III: basically your the hired help therefore it's your job to drive)

People don't mind repitition as much if it's a game because they understand it.

Now that's not to say that the game SHOULD be repetitive, obviously there are new elements that should be introduced and maybe others that should be changed or taken out but the process needs be slow.

-I'm all for the female protagonist, that would bring much to the table for a GTA game and as they have made 13 games already it would certainly keep it fresh.

-Snow hasn't appeared in GTA yet, it would be fun to run in the snow, maybe have snowball fights, skii with your girlfriends (firiends or boyfriends) ride snowmobiles and other snow vehicles, or just do missions generally involving it.

-I'm sure people can think of other elements not yet introduced.

Rockstar have been pretty good at introducing new things such as Comedy/Cabaret Clubs, the Internet and such and this is a good pace to be doing it if they expect to make more games.

As for the stories:

There will always countless ways to tell a story involving the criminal underworld because the sad truth is criminals still exist among the earth but not all are cold hearted. Since SA, it was always interesting to see how the charater would remorse, regret or just flat out refuse certain of his actions (a long stretch from the 2D games) and this is why the GTA stories have been successful within themselves.

Anyway, to sum up, your idea is good, but not for GTA. Though I'm not a fan of games involving zombies and viruses and stuff, after your descriptions I would certainly give this game a try even if it was a GTA game, but I would prefer if GTA kept it's crime/drama/action appeal in a believable world (aside from the city being fictional) because that is what GTA is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Not Grand Theft Auto style

No more Hookers and Strip clubs

Not very realistic for a Girl to be a criminal mastermind

If there was a friend feature again, it would be like hanging out with the girls.

You would have Boy friends..... suicidal.gif

Its a fact that females are less masculine than men, so the character would be less powerful.

- becasue you say so? I don't think autosave feature should be present in the game as it's not GTA style and guess what? It's there.

- you could grab male gigolos and go to all women clubs

- yeah, mastermind. Niko is a mastermind? CJ was a criminal mastermind. You should really look up what that word actually means. GTA lead characters (like most characters in GTA games are criminals. Full stop. Chicks can be criminals, too.

- so? It would be jsut as lame as ganging with the guys. Also, this is a "GTA style" feature? Hanging with the pals? Come on, grow up.

- so? Like I said, the friends feature should cease to exist in GTA style of games becasue it's lame.

- LOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLL

If my sig wasn't full already, this quote would go in there.

Also, girls don't have dicks, so they couldn't go around and say "byte me" or "suck my dick"... what a loss would that be.

What's all this talk about "lesbo parties" and "boyfriends"?

I remember saying (in the lead-up to the release of GTA IV) something similar to:

If you want a girlfriend or a boyfriend (in a sexual relationship), then go out and get one. It's in the real world where those things actually count (and have their pros and cons). If you're looking for that same thing in an action/adventure game (where it is NOT the main objective/theme of the game), then you have problems.

Male/female, it should not matter. Lara Croft's creator no-doubt had the intention of a making an attractive, sexy character. Here it is no different, except that Dan and Sam Houser see their men as being "sexy". Call me "old fashioned", but I think sex should play no part in regular games...it just doesn't have the same effect as it does in real life, and as-such is a waste of time and effort by developers and players.

This is where GTA is heading. The most annoying feature of all times in GTA (IMO) is here to stay. I expect next GTA to have a pager that comes with the game. You will be able to carry it around and receive various messages from your virtual buddies, even when you're not playing.

It'll be grand.

I think Roman should be dead, because the people that chose 'Deal' in IV wouldn't like to see him in Cheyenne. Also, if you chose 'Revenge', after a while Roman would in some way or another be killed. And after all, Roman is not a guy that would be interested in the making of horror movies.

I'd rather see a depressed Mallorie with her daughter 'Kate' and her brother-in-law Niko, a depressed one-legged (for an unexplained reason) that would hang himself in the middle of the storyline.

I like the concept of the horror movie Gore-anga. But it had to be made by someone else.

Im sorry but I like mikeys idea better. That would be dramatic but....I just don't like it.

Kev, very nice copy paste biggrin.gif. 'twas good back then, it's good now.

On the female lead character - I can't believe how xenophobic the general public is. Rember when GTA SA was out? A black lead character? "OMG, go fetch the torches!!!1!!"

Like what Dragonex100 is suggesting, anything, but a lady. Mexicans, Irish... whatever, only the background changes. Culture, surroundings... You don't have to have a Mexican character to have a Mexican theme.

With a women as a lead character, you would breathe a lot of fresh air into the series. For example, where a man lead would use brute force, female character could use charm to obtain the same result. Or, instead of charm, you could use some psychotic chick like Catalina. Just like Tony Montana, but emotionally unstable. THAT'S a GTA I would like to play.

Look, it would be a cool idea, but thats a little to much for GTA. Keep in mind, since GTA3 its been like this:

GTA3: Wierd white guy

GTAVC: White Mobster

GTASA: Black Guy

GTALCS: White Mobster, Again

GTAVCS: Black guy again

GTAIV: Serbian/East European illegal immagrant

CTW: Chinese guy

See room for more?

Yeah, how about a Mexican immigrant? There's always room for more, my friend. smile.gif

Excactly. when we run out of backrounds, we can go into female characters.

I say they will probably use a mexican next time around and the VCS guy was half white half latino. By the time this game could be made ( 6 times the size of Liberty but still fully detailed? Only on Xbox 720 and PS4) we probably would have had everything from a mexican to gay guy to a robot (lol the last one). So a realstically driven female characte should work fine in weird circumstances. She shouldn't selling meth or trying to become queen of the city though.

Having a female character is fine.

I like most of this idea, but not really for a GTA game. It doesn't seem to fit with how I personally think the next game should be.

However, as a non-GTA game idea, it is awesome.

Sorry to bump, but I really think this is an awesome draft. Cheyenne sounds like an awesome city. Colorado would work excellent for the next GTA. Denver is a pretty small city, but could still work. I think people enjoyed SA so much because it had a little something for everybody. You could be in downtown LS one minute, and blueberry the next. Plus it would be awesome to have snow in GTA. rolleyes.gif

As for a female character, I believe it could work. She would have to be pretty cool. I'm not to sure about her backround. She sounds too ordinary. She would have to be extraordinary. Perhaps a dangerous past? Murder in her past? Sadly, I doubt we'll see a female character anytime soon.

Overall, a brilliant draft. cookie.gifcookie.gifcookie.gif
