Why normal people play GTAIV

I have never been a member of any video-game's forum, I wasn't an enthusiast gamer either.

Computer's games was no more then just fun for me, so after few mounts of patroling this forum, I thought about few issues that I would like to share with you.

We all see different kind of games that the gaming industry has to offer, we can say that most of the games is an action games, but only few of them are really violent games that offer pointless sadistical abusment in a so high rate, GTAIV is the most famous and popular of them, I an sure that we can find many reasons for why GTAIV is greater then other games, however this is not a topic just for that.

First I have to admit that I have been loving violent games since the first GTA, and when I think about it, it's probably because the outrageous horrible activities that this game has to offer.

The disturbing thing about such games is that we can find many action games with shooting, killing, and explosives, the difference that GTAIV offers is that you can choose without any normal purpose or pressure or timelimit how to manage this controversial activities.

Or in other words just an expression of pure sadism, here is the time to say that I don't think that video games really influace us in the real life, and that we won't bomb real cars and people, I rather tend to think that video games show us which kind of people we are, and there is no better experiment then playing a sandbox game in order to test ourselves.

I can explain myself that I am playing Crysis and FC2 for the grapichs, fallout3 and bioshock for the artistical environment, racing games for the fast actions and Diablo2 just because it's great.

The problem came when I thought about GTAIV, I remember then I started to play Postal II just because it had infamous contents, it wasn't a great game even really stupid and pointless one I should add, and in spite of all I just had to finish it no matter what, other games that I didn't love like spore and mirrors edge I didn't finish till the current day.

This issue really makes me think about myself, many people described me in my real life as an acoustical selfish moral-less bastard that tend to be a prick from time to time and all of this just for the fun of it.

I thought that most of the members of this site are supposed to be more or less like me, and then I found out that most of the people here act and think like the mainstream people that don't really like GTAIV and other violent games (like my mom smile.gif ), and few of you even told me here that I am kind of evil person, so what kind of people you are?

I personally think that most of the real fans of this game are like me, the only difference is that they are living in denial.

How the hell you can love those scenes and enjoy playing them without being a prick?

GTA (all of them) are unique. No other game will ever be like GTA. I really wouldn't know how to explain why is that but is just a fact (at least for me). I tried Mercenaries 2 and I played it until the end and I dind't feel the need to do it all over with the other 2 characters. I tried many other games like GTA (3D that is) and none of them could fulfill my expectations.

What GTA has that other lack? For me at least: dialogue, story (stupid or bad some may say), fun, sarcasm, freedom, enviroment, funny pedestrians, funny characters... Pick Mercs 2, people says the same stuff over and over (might have like 3 dialogs lines total). FarCry2, after few killings becomes boring, drive here, kill someone, drive there, kill another one; yeah some missions in GTA are the same, but they have some dialogues on the way...

The game is violent, yes, I am not, I'm really a shy guy, the "geek" of the office (no, I'm a good looking-"glassless"-guy tounge.gif), I am an accountant in a big fashion company (thing of a D and then a G tounge.gif) who have to deal with phone calls to clients all day long and all of them define me as a nice guy, respectful and all that stuff (yeah, they better say so, I'm the one collecting their debts tounge.gif). Also I'm a good family guy, loving husband who do a lot of activities with my loving wife.

I don't really have any violent thoughts after killing 3049 cops in a game, nor I have the need or urgencies to go and play some violent game to satisfy any repressed feelings, because at the end of the day, what I really want to do is just play an entertaning, funny and satisfying game, and so far, the only game that fulfill that need, is GTA IV.

Nah, none of the GTAs have ever affected my morality, except I've been swearing more often since San Andreas tounge2.gif, e.g. when my USB wireless broadband modem lags during COD4 multiplayer (i.e. "Connection Interrupted") I yell "you f**kin useless piece of slow-a$$ sh1t! I'm gonna throw you out the motherf*cking window if you don't start f*cking working! ahhh!", etc.

GTA is purely entertainment, not to brainwash people into being sadists.

BTW this thread will probably be locked. It's think its supposed to be in the gameplay section or something.

Actually, GTA did screw my mind a little... when I see a BMW on the street I instantly think "wow, nice Sentinel"... or, "that Comet is cool"... sarcasm.gif

Plain escapism. That's all any form of 'culture' is. From the works of Shakespeare to the lamest B-movie or daytime sitcom you ever saw, games are just another medium. Some like to escape to magical lands of elves and orks, others prefer sin and vice. GTA is nowhere near as violent as a typical R-rated slasher-flick or even most shooters when you think about the lack of blood or wounds or the ability to maim. Even Rockstar's own MANHUNT is way way more sadistic and I would argue attracts a different kind of "fan" but largely the same target demographic; teenage boys below the minimum age requirements through to married bored middle-aged men. People that are really into 'ultra-violence' probably wouldn't give GTA IV more than a passing glimpse.

Just a game. Put the disc in the 360. Play. Have fun. Put the disc back in the box. Back to reality. Simple as...

And if you begin to doubt about morality because you play violent games, then there is definately something wrong with your education. Normal people can seperate harmless 'sadistic' fun in games from the daily things in reality. I for one love to play GTA because it let's you do what you want. Not what i'd do in reality, it's a form of entertainment. If it's actionpacked or killing people or simple racing, all things i wouldn't do under any circumstance in reality.

I hate it when people, namely parents en Fox News, try to blame developers like Rockstar that they are the cause of all the trouble that their children are doing. eeuhh newsflash, everyone is responsible for his or her actions under any circustance. And howcome if it's Rockstar's fault and parents are complaining, WHY THE f*ck DO THEIR CHILDREN HAVE A COPY OF GTA IN THEIR HOUSE?

(not directed to anyone here obviously)

@ Guanxi: Plain escapism, that's exactly it!

Because inside they're not normal. But inside doesn't matter...

No matter how violent the games, i didn't do all the that things in my real life. Video games just for fun and killing my leisure times. Do everything in violent games, like murdering, beat innocent peoples, throw old grandma, etc? than you are the most pathetic, worst little loser that ever live on earth.

To bartekxyz: I just realize you got a medal! Shiny! congrats dude smile.gif

major underscore

I play the GTA games because they are extremely well-crafted games with tons of great gameplay. I've played many other (sometimes violent) games over the years, but none of them have been close to this kind of quality. I've actually spent most of my time with GTA playing the online racing mod MTA:SA Race, which has almost no violence (other than cars crashing and such), so it's not the violence I'm looking for in a game.

I'm a very peaceful harmonious guy, always have been and the GTA games haven't changed that one bit (sorry, Jack Thompson).

  • 2 weeks later...

I remember when i was in primary school and i wanted to make my own game where you had the freedom to do anything. A few years later my sister introduced me to grand theft auto and i loved it. I play it because there arent many other games that you do what you want when you want.

I like sandboxing, same. Hardly any games let you do it.
