game hangs on LOAD a save game, and locks on Exit

I can load my game and play it.

but if i try to go to the menu and LOAD a saved game, it locks up on the LOADING screen.

also, 90% of the time when i try to EXIT GAME, it locks up, and i have to unplug my PC (slap ANY computer designer that doesn't install a Reset Button).

 

I'm running 3500 AMD dual core processor.

2.5 gigs of ram.

Nvidia 7600 gs 512mb.

WinXP

 

I leave the game on low settings, but i can set traffic to 100% with NO performance degredation at ALL.

not sure of my actual FPS, but it's probably around 10? (GTA4 could use a FPS counter)

 

occassionaly i can Alt-F4 the game to exit.

sometimes when i try to load the game, all i see is three horizontal grey patches, and the hair model.

just closing it and trying to reload the game a few times will fix that.

 

my computer plays most games very well and smoothly on all high settings.

what i have is a minor issue, but it would be nice to be able to LOAD a game without closing it and restarting the game engine again.

any clues?

small update-

i just founf the new water texture resolution and reflection settings.

by default they are on HIGH and Very High, so i dropped them to low/low...

i guess i'm running a smotth 30-40 fps!!!!

gonna see what i can get when i crank up the screen res now.. woot woo t WOOT thank you rackstar! water resolution was eating my fps like a dragon eats sheep. (even in middle of town)
