Next view the desktop, right click on the newly created shortcut and choose properties. OMG R* suck donkey balls! How the hell do they get off suggesting a fix that they know has NOTHING to do with the problem I'm having? Motherf*ckers! The fix they suggested is actually to do with slow/fast gameplay, not freezing... >.<
_FLINT_
Yeah, I'm still getting freezes/crashes now. Seems to either freeze or crash after about 2 hours of gameplay. It's been pretty consistent. Sometimes I get an error message with a crash, other times it just freezes and I'll have to head to the task manager. I've tried the nomemrestrict fix as well as a few others and nothing seems to make a difference. I haven't tried lowering the graphics settings in the game or lowering resolution, but who would want to? I hope Rockstar is working on fixing this game and not just trying to sweep these issues under the rug.

Subversion1337
The only thing I can think of is that if everyone having this problem reports it to R* Support they may be more likely to fix it in the next patch if such a thing ever comes... Though another part of me thinks that there isn't much point contacting them at all given the shoddy response they gave me... Here's the link anyway: http://www.rockstargames.com/support If you do contact them it might be a good idea to mention all the fixes you've tried so that they don't try to blow you off with the same BS... Arkangel
FFS!!!! even the dam support site gives back errors, this is what's on: Question Is having over 3GB+ RAM and setting the /3GB switch in Windows XP a problem for my graphics card? Why? Answer On Windows XP, some drivers, especially video adapter drivers with onboard RAM, cannot run with the /3GB parameter because they require more address space than the 1GB kernel address space permits. We advise users that have added the /3GB switch in order to maximize their 'user-mode virtual address space' to 3GB from 2GB, to remove this switch. It can cause your system to crash and may contribute to other issues. Please be sure to delete this switch from your boot entries: boot.ini and any other places where you may have this switch activated. To find out more information about this switch, please visit the following link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms791558.aspx

Subversion1337
Well, I tried something and it seems to have worked so far (i.e the last 5 or so hour long sessions...).. Basically start the game in safe mode D: The only difference is it resests your display config and the multiplayer model, but everyhting else is the same. Again I'll report back if it freezes in safe mode in the future, but so far it hasn't.

nikopolimo
Hi guys. Been testing GTAIV after patch 1.0.2.0, had PC freezing on me. Just wanted to let you know what works for me up until now, the computer has not frozen in 5+ hours of gameplay. Rig: Q6600 @ 3.3Ghz Gigabyte P35-DS3 4GB memory Vista 64bit Ati HD4870 512MB (Cat 8.12 with hotfix) Updated Vista fully, also DirectX fully updated. In commandline file, only option is -availablevidmem 2.0. Clip is off. As soon as I do not use the above option, game freezes after 1 to 5 minutes of gameplay. In game settings are: [email protected] Aspect Auto Texture medium All other settings - High Draw 25 Visual distance 65 Cars 35 Shadow 8 The other two options are On Hope it helps someone. EDIT: some info about the commandline -availablevidmem availablevidmem Edited February 20, 2009 by nikopolimo

Arkangel
i removed the overclocking (q6600 @3.2) and now the game doesn't freeze, but it doesn't lookg good either, not fluid at all, and the oddest thing is that it only shows a 2 fps decrease on the benchmark, in the meanwhile i downloaded a "fix freezing gta iv problem" patch which basicly (by what i've seen) only added a commandline.txt with -no restrictions init i'll retry overclock with diferent voltage for gpu now the problem is in the GPU, 4870 users can flash bios and say goodbye to freezing problems

Arkangel
freezes and crashes came back after overclock so it's definitly that what is causing the problems, but without overclock this game looks terrible, sh*t bought a new computer and the game just to play it, sh*t again
Crouton70
Wanna know the funny thing? I put this game in my Dell XPS laptop and it looks like hell but plays flawlessly. No hiccups, no freezing. Has to be on the lowest setting since the lappy only has a 256 meg nVidia 8600GT video card, but it plays just fine. Go figure. If only my desktop would play it that smoothly I'd be a happy camper. Laptop specs vs desktop: Laptop Dell XPS M1530 Intel Core2 Duo 2.16 Ghz 3 Gb of ram nVidia 8600GT 256 meg 320 Gb hard drive Desktop Athlon X2 6400 3.2 Ghz 2 Gb of ram Radeon HD4670 512 meg 250 Gb hard drive Using the 1.0.1.0 patch, forgot to mention that. Tyzu
Thanks everyone for the information on this thread. I was having the lockup issues, but solved them with two of the fixes listed above. 1) Latest nVidia beta driver - gave a framerate boost too. Probably what did it... 2) The integrated audio setting Hz change (went to 24 bit from 16 too). Couldn't hurt, maybe helped. Can't say this will work for all, but it saved my butt. Clip capture off always. Running latest patches for GTA4, Live, and Social Club. All drivers up to date. Dell 630i Vista Home Premium 64bit Q9550 8gb DDR2 @ 800 nVidia GeForce 280 Dell 630i mobo - yes it's hamstrung at x8, but I get 48FPS with very high settings (but only 1280x1024 display) no overclocking or other mods Twin 750 Seagates in Raid 1 Good Luck to those of you still searching for a fix - it's a game well worth fighting for. Subversion1337
Hmmm, I am very ashamed to have admit this... but ummm, I did some further tests and Crysis started freezing for me too. My gpu is getting hotter and hotter... Idle temps are now 80 C ish and load temps go up to 120 C which is the absolute limit for my card... I can only say that for me personally its most likely that the issue is my gpu running far too hot. I only hope that when I sort the heat issues I wont be getting freezes in GTA IV again... Crouton70
I just did a re-install of windows, was working great before the install. I went from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium, hated it, did a format and re-installed XP Pro. It worked fine on the old XP install, same with Vista. Once I did a clean install, bam. Around 6.9 fps, if it doesn't crash and freeze after the first minute or so. I've tried all the fixes mentioned, still nothing working. Still runs great on my laptop , even though I can only run it at 800 x 600 so it looks kinda crappy. Shame the game is so buggy, it's loads of fun. I was just saying that my next step is to sort out my gpu temps. I personally can't point the finger at GTA IV until I do that. with you it's not heat issues given that your temps are low. With me its either heat issues and GTA IV, or just heat issues. I will say one thing, this game tests your PC's stability much more than Crysis or any other game in my experience.
