GTA 4 Freeze on PC

Question

_FLINT_

I know many people are having problems with the freezing, among other things, but I wanted to start a thread specific for my system specs to see if there's anyone else out there with similar components that may have a fix. The game runs perfectly fine on max settings for about 5 - 10 minutes and then out of nowhere it'll freeze. No error messages.

MY system:

Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.4Ghz

6 gigs Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600Mhz

EVGA X58 Mobo (latest bios)

Nvidia GTX 285 (latest drivers)

2xWD 500AALS in RAID 0

Silverstone 1000W PSU

Windows Vista 64 (optimized for performance)

No issues running Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, CoD, FSX or any other game.

Any help would be appreciated, otherwise I think I might just ship this game back to newegg or sell it.

Edit: Should also mention that the game is updated to the latest patch.

Hmm, that other person would be me. Exact same problem. But the freeze in GTA IV is not just limited to i7 920 cpu's. Quad's and Core 2's report such freezing too. There are many threads and posts on it.

Looks like it was as simple as turning off the clip capture for me. Either that, or updating to the 182.05 beta driver from nvidia. Been playing for the last 2 hours or so and not a single issue.

FLINT: let us know if the freezes start happening again. It's happened to me where it seems to run fine for hours, even days and then it goes back to freezing very often.

logitechdog: I find it quite funny that you are quicker to blame intel's i7 920 processor rather than rockstar's notoriously buggy port of a game...

well the i7 connects to a motherboard does it not? its a quad with 8 threads and makes the northbridge not needed, which directly connects the system ram to the cpu, the motherboards are new... the cpu is new... its using ddr3 ram...

and allot of people are getting overheat problems... so if I say i7 I mean the hole package.. they allready launched 3 fixs in 1 month for the bios of your motherboard... i7 run hotter than a quad... they probably have not got a full bug report of conflicting drivers or hardware yet, you might of not setup something wright, well if it works days or hours then maybe something is firing up that is causing it...

But speedfan tells me my cpu cores run at about 30 C on idle and a max of 45 C on full load in GTA IV...

And who do I trust out of Gigabyte, Intel or Rockstar to have done their pre-launch testing better? Hmmmm...

Yeah, I'll keep you guys updated if the freezes start happening again.

And I can confirm that there aren't any overheating issues while playing the game. CPU stays in the 50s 95% of the time, idles at 37. I've also run multiple stability tests on this system and haven't had one single issue. I use the PC daily for working in Photoshop on hi-resolution documents (with complex brushes), Mudbox and complex scenes in Maya. I also play other graphic and cpu intensive games without any problem at all. The ONLY issue I've had with this computer so far is GTA4.

The problem is the game, not hardware. Granted, some people may have their hardware configured incorrectly, but that doesn't change the fact that the game is broken.

Well nothing works for me... and I've submitted my system to countless stability and performance tests with no issues at all...

I opened a support ticket with R*... here's a quote of the message I sent them:

Please fix or suggest a fix for the following problem:

GTA IV freezes my PC seemingly randomly so that it requires a hard reset of the system. Sometimes it'll work for hours, sometimes for 30 minutes, sometimes for a minute, sometimes for seconds...

My PC has a fresh Windows install fully updated, GTA IV is a fresh install and fully updated, all my drivers are fully updated. The system is stable under a very wide range of stability tests, including 3dMark06, NVIDIA stability tests, Futuremark burn in tests, PassMark tests, photoshop, GTA SA, Crysis, etc, etc ,etc. The system is tip top, working 100% as it should be, and surpasses recommended specs.

Many many other users are having this problem also, using a wide range of otherwise stable systems. You only need ot look at gtaforums.com troubleshooting seciton to see that this bug is very widespread.

I attach a dxdiag report and and msinfo report, but cannot attach a screenshot of the error because the PC freezes and requires a hard restart.

I spent a lot of money mainly so I could play this great game. Please help me (and others) be able to play without too frequent crashes. Thanks.

Supposedly I'll hear from them by tomorrow...

Subversion, I don't know if you're running OC'd or a 3rd party cooler or anything like that, but have you checked your temps while benchmarking or playing GTA? Also, have you run Prime95 or Intel Burn Test? What're your system specs? OS included.

And I take it you're running an nvidia card, did you try the beta driver? 182.05. Like I said above, after switching to that driver, the game worked. But I also disabled the Clip Capture in the same attempt, so I don't really know which one was the culprit. I'm willing to bet it was Clip Capture, and I suppose I could test it out.

Good luck with Rockstar, hopefully they can help out.

No OC, no 3rd party cooler, temps have been checked with Speedfan.

The CPU temps are very low, 30-35 C idle, 40 - 47 C under heaviest load.

The GPU temps are OK... Nvidia states on their site that anything from 50 - 90 C is a normal working temperature and the chips are designed to be safe at up to 120 C. The GPU temps never go above 90 under heaviest load. I am considering getting a good cooler for the card, or a new better card altogether though...

I've run lot's of stress tests and performed 100% without issues in all of them. I haven't tried Prime 95 specifically, but I might do for fun.

Specs (not quite as nice as yours tounge.gif ):

- Intel Core i7 920 CPU at stock speed of 2.67 GHz

- Gigabyte EX58 UDP4 Motherboard

- Triple channel 3 x 2Gb of DDR3 1333 MHz RAM = 6 GB total (running at 1066 MHz, registering as 3 GB under Windows XP 32 bit)

- GeForce 9800 GT

- Windows XP Service Pack 3 (considering upgrading to 64 bit Vista to take full advantage of my RAM)

- Newly and correctly installed system, latest drivers for everything, latest patches

- 55 fps benchmark

Clip capture makes no difference to me.

GTA IV ran fine last night, but I will not be surprised if it starts freezing again for no reason.

I hesitate trying beta drivers instead of the fully certified driver.. convince me tounge.gif

Thanks, I hope so too.

Well yeah, looks like overheating's definitely not an issue. And I take your word that everything's stable.

Only way I can think to convince you to try out that beta driver is for me to turn Clip Capture back on and have the game run stable. That'd basically seal the deal on it being a gpu driver issue. So maybe I'll do that and report back.

Otherwise, I've been using that beta for the last 2 days and haven't had any problems with anything.

I turned clip capture on and was able to play for about an hour then got a crash to desktop with an error message. So I guess it's not the beta driver that helped. Clip Capture just doesn't work out.

With it turned off I still haven't had any problems though.

hmm interesting.

well, I've had PC freezes without clip capture on...

My guess is that GTA IV is very unstable, and that clip capture only makes it more unstable.

EDIT: w00!1 a full day without freezing, g0d knows why biggrin.gif

Sucks man, wish I knew how to help. I take it Rockstar hasn't responded yet.

Trying the beta drivers for your gpu might be worth a shot. If it doesn't work out you can always just re-install the whql driver.

Click start, select run, navigate to the GTAIV.exe file and select it. Then delete the quotation marks and add -nomemrestrict after it so that it looks like this -

C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV.exe -nomemrestrict

Do not use any other commands when you run this and make sure Social Club is not already open. Also delete the commandline.txt file if u have been using it. This seems to stop the game from crashing. Running an executable file in this manner on 64 bit Vista automatically runs the file with Administrator Privilages so if UAC is enabled it wont be an issue

My CPU

Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz

8GB RAM

GTX 285 - Driver Version 182.05

64 bit Vista UAC disabled

Hi guys! Think I have a solution to the random freezes. My beast is a Sager NP 9262 with q9550 quad-core, 4 Gb of ram and 2 1 Gb 9800M GTX-s in SLi under Vista Home Premium 64bit.

My audio controller is Realtek High Definition audio ([/u]ALC883)

I had tried everything without being able to play more than 5 minutes without freezes and then thought it could be something with audio, seems I was right, tested it for 2 hours and no crashes or freezes! I then even enabled SLI and maxed up the visuals (not the view distance and stuff of course) and played it on 1600x1200 without any problems at all.

What I did was to go to the Realtek HD Audio control panel and chose the playback device ("speakers" for me) and then in their properties changed the default format from 24bit 48000 kHz to 24bit 44100 kHz[/u]. Also unchecked the two boxes under exclusive mode. That's it, after that no more freezes! Will continue further tests and let you know if this is a solution to the freezing problem... rolleyes.gif

Nice fixes you guys are giving here. Thanks.

I tested my GPU temps a bit more and they are very high actually. Definately need to get better cooling for it even if that isnt the cause of the freezes.

I will test those fixes properly and report back smile.gif

one thing that totally fixed the game freeze / lockup to sound loop and hard reset was putting -availablevidmem 2.0 in the gta shortcut, but after patch 2 such command stopped working and freezes came back, i'll try nomemrestrict now, but i'm sick and tired of this sh*t icon13.gif

Well, the two times I've used -nomemrestrict I haven't had crashes... I'll report back if I do get a crash with it ever.

As far as changing the frequency of the sound through my audio control panel (I also have realtek) I couldn't find that option.

So far the three fixes I've seen that seem to add stability are:

nomemrestrict

turning clip capture off

increasing the number of pre-rendered frames through cpu before sending to gpu

how do you do such tweak?

I don't know about ati cards, but on nvidia cards you can do it through the nvidia control panel. Go to "Manage 3D settings" then "Program Settings", then select LaunchGTAIV.exe and change the pre-rendered frames from 3 to 5 or 6. This will put more stress on your CPU though I think so maybe you need a good cpu for this fix confused.gif

Chances are you can implement that fix via the command line method but I wouldn't know the exact command...

bah, just froze with all of those fixes and my gpu definately wasn't too hot (was monitoring with speedfan)

using ati 9.1 uninstaled previous drivers before installing these, already reinstaled the game, patch 1 and -availablevidmem 2.0 will NEVER cause the game to freeze, patch 2 pfft just forget it, the game looks prettier, but it's unplayable for many

WOOT!

R* sent me this email a couple of days ago! (hadn't checked)

Hello,

Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\

Find the LaunchGTAIV.exe file, right click and select "Send to" --> "Desktop (Create shortcut). Next view the desktop, right click on the newly created shortcut and choose properties. Find the box called Target which should read as the following :

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe"

Please change this to read as

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -notimefix

Save the changes made by clicking okay. Then run the game again using this new shortcut.

Kind Regards,

2K Games Technical Support

Gonna try the fix tomorrow as I'm gonna go sleep now.
