So.....what was so good about it?

Watch it and you'll find out.

 

It's an image of young thugs and how a teacher tries to make a school look like a school, not a war zone. A bit like "Dangerous Minds" but darker and not that optimistic at all, plus a shocking ending. Good movie, not really original, quite boring for a half an hour but definitely worth watching.

So, I watched The Usual Suspects Saturday. Yeah. I stayed in and watched a film on my own. Anyway, at first I thought, what's the hype about this? Looks like any 90's thriller film, I thought. An hour or so in, when the film really began I kind of started to understand. But the ending, whoa. I can't tell you how many times I've seen that ending replicated in various TV shows and films. It blew me away. When he said Keaton was Keyser Söze I was baffled. Such a sympathetic character, IMO, didn't expect that from him. Needless to say, the real ending had me even more baffled. Great film, though I didn't think Spacey was that great. I've also grown to like Chazz Palminteri now.

What is very interesting about this Cronenberg film that follows up A History of Violence, as David puts it... is that in the film, direct reference is made to Edinburg Scotland, the home base of operations for Rockstar North.

 

Most of you GTAFanatics who've been around already know that Sam Houser watched the film while GTA4 was still being made! He commented in EDGE magazine's cover story about it.

 

I wonder what his reaction to that alone was!??

He did claim GTA4's Russians were better cast and voice characters.

 

I felt the film was not as fun to watch as History of Violence, I like the sparring more in the first movie.

I thought GTA4 was about Yugoslavians or Serbians, not Russians?

 

Anyhow, I loved Eastern Promises. The sauna scene is probably one of the best moments of stressful anguish I've ever sat through in a film. A knife fight with your dick hanging out? Scary as f*ck.

So many people in the cinema flinched at the knife in the eye. Think I was the only one that burst out laughing.

I felt the film seemed conventional from a David Cronenberg perspective, comparing it to his past horror style films. This one seems more like watching his first funnycar racing film (had Nightmare's John Saxon starring!)

 

I also got around to watching Danzel in American Gangster... I'm a bit surprised the story wasn't told some time ago, very enjoyable!

I recently watched Fireproof, an extremely inspiring movie for any of you who are married and need a little encouragement, Kirk Cameron does a flawless performance as Capt. Caleb Holt, the firefighter who is struggling to find peace in his marriage. The rest of cast does an excellent performance as well. This movie isn't for everyone but I totally recommend.

I watched Frost/Nixon yesterday afternoon. Now that, is a great movie. There's nothing better than a political film with a genuinely engaging plot. Great direction from Ron Howard as usual, and good acting all around. The only iffy performance might have come from Kevin Bacon's always shaky line-reading, but he served his purpose. Michael Sheen was real fun to watch here. A cocky TV-personality that had to get his ass handed to him and his career dismantled to finally find the drive to stick it to Nixon, who was portrayed to be such a sympathetic character. A character played amazingly by Frank Langella. His Oscar nomination was aptly-deserved. He was funny, intimidating, and that late night phone call to David was incredible. Frank hit a sweet-spot, a stride, in that scene. Made me see how wound up a guy Tricky Dick really was.

 

Loved the ending too, with that final shot, fading to black. Great movie, with just the right running time to make matters better.

I just finished watching THE DEPARTED with Wahlberg, Sheen, Nicholson, and Damon/DiCaprio.... Directed by Martin Scorsese.

 

I found it a surprise to hear The Berlin Wall version of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb...considering I'm playin a lot of FLOYD recordings at the moment, even one right now in fact!

 

Departed is excellent crime drama, with nothing but star talant. I sure wanted a more upbeat ending, but that's just what HOLLYWOOD would want, and directors RAIL aGAINST!

Film: Silences of the Palace

 

Opinion: Alia is 23yrs old nightclub singer (or there-abouts) in post-colonial Tunisia, and after the death of one of her former masters, she returns to the Palace where she and her mother served as servants. Told in flashback form, she recounts the events from ten years ago, where Alia is now only a naive 13yr old girl in a French colonial country that is about to fall to independence and how here mother tried to protect her from the horrors she had to endure. It's quite an emotionally moving film, and technically crafted very well. However, the only problem I found was the film leaves too many loose at ends. At only two hours in length, Tlatti (director) has to skip past many interesting issues among the characters and could have probably done with an extra hour or so to fill in these blindspots.

I had the pleasure of seeing the extended cut of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly today, IN THE CINEMA.

 

Only annoying thing was it was the dubbed English version.

Film: The Damned United

 

Opinion: Brian Howard Clough. “The greatest English manager never to manage the English National side.” Whether you agree with that sentiment or not, everybody knows Brian Clough was one of the great personalities of the game. Based around David Pearce’s bestselling novel ‘The Damned United’ (which Johnny Giles called: “fiction based on fact”), the films narrative follows the events preceding and during those fateful 44-days of management from the perspective of Cloughie (played by Michael Sheen).

 

Sheen turns in, yet another brilliant performance as the arrogant, stubborn, distant, bitter, intelligent, yet highly flawed man who went on to become a legend of British football. From his mannerisms to the way he speaks, Sheen projects the outward personality of Brian Clough through to the audience to a tee. And more importantly he takes the film away from the touchlines of simply being ‘another football film’, and instead creates a human drama about one man’s battle with jealously, bitterness and ambition and how that can destroy everything around you, quicker than Billy Bremner could break your legs. While Morgan’s script keeps up the dry wit and humour, and Hooper’s direction carries the colourful scenery of 1960’s and 1970’s Britain, the film could have spent more time centred around the other players on the pitch, more specifically Clough’s second in-command in Peter Taylor and the Leeds United side of the Revie era. They are shown to be Revie’s surrogate sons and nothing more. With that said however, I found it a hugely enjoyable film that went way beyond the stereotypical association we have football films today and instead created a profile of a man who encompassed everything that was good, bad and all that in between about the beautiful game.

Watched the first Godfather on AMC couple days ago. Man, every time I watch that movie I think about how badass it would be to be in a mafia. Loved Marlon Brando in this movie and James Caan as Sonny. Really an all-star cast and one of my favorite movies, despite some calling it overrated

Dead Poets' Society.

 

Wasn't expecting much, since my English III teacher made us watch it after we finished covering transcendentalism, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm a bit disappointed with my classmates for laughing at scenes like when the mother is in hysterics after one of the boys kills themselves, but, oh well.

 

It's not one of Robin Williams' best films, but it certainly is worth a watch.

It was overhayped so but still a good funny film. Inspired me to rent Pineapple Express for tonight. Along with 4 ohter movies from the "list"

I watched Gang Related, starring James Belushi and Tupac, about 4 hours ago. It was alright I suppose. The ending was horrible though.

Monsters Vs. Aliens (3D)

 

Quite fun, but wasn't a laugh a minute affair. The film looked beautiful, which goes without saying since it's a Dreamworks, and the 3D was used subtly and sparingly so it didn't make your ill. This I thought was it's defining feature however, I hadn't seen a 3D film before and enjoyed the experience. Other than that the story dragged slightly and there was only the occasionally laugh usually by Seth Rogen's character.

 

Alright for kids, but nothing to really grip an adult. Got to see the Coraline trailer in 3D though, so that was a plus

I watched a lesser-known Robert DeNiro gem on Tuesday: Stanley & Iris.

 

I watched it on a recommendation from my father. Starring DeNiro and Jane Fonda, this 1990 film was quite the sad, heartwarming tale. DeNiro plays illiterate Stanley Cox, a chef in a bakery who falls for Iris, an assembly-line employee. Short story, she teaches him how to read while also falling for him, and it's got a great feel good ending. The plot point of Stanley and his father was a real tearjerker. Made me think of my own dad. Jane Fonda is hot, DeNiro is charming as always, and it's a good spirit lifter. The writing could have been better, as 2 characters just disappear from the movie without any explanation, and there's frequent lapses of time that just get skipped in between many scenes. Kind of annoying, but other than that, this is a real winner. It was a change to see DeNiro so vulnerable, and the scenes where his illiteracy is really highlighted were tough.

The Big Lebowski. Not my favourite Coen brother's movie (that goes to the unlikely Burn After Reading which was comedy gold) but still a pretty damn good film.

I rented out Zack & Miri Make a Porno last night, and really enjoyed it!

 

I chose the film well aware that it could have been just like Rogen's performances in Superbad and Knocked Up, and to be honest it did seem that way. But that wasn't a bad thing for me, I thoroughly enjoyed both Superbad and Knocked Up, and thoroughly enjoyed this film as well. Granted, it's not the greatest film to grace this planet, but for a couple of hours of comedy, it's definitely worth a watch. The story was.. weird, and although the film ended exactly how I expected it to, it didn't take away the comedic and entertainment value.

 

I'm still yet to see Pineapple Express, but I'll be sure to do so in the future.

I believe I mentioned XXX the follow up sequal State of the Union, that one had been sitting around for over a year and I finally watched it. I don't think it really sticks out as some youthful Bond type film, but I have to admit, I enjoyed the cars, pretty good action, but all in all, falls flat, seems cliche and hard to see Ice Cube as a notable actor, but he seems sincere in the low key scenes, where he doesn't try and crack a line for humor, that's probably his best trait so far...as an actor.

I disagree. Thought it was pretty good. I believe the last movie i watched was Eden lake, but the last movie i watched which I've seen already was final destination 3.

 

Eden lake was pretty good, if you like a good thriller film i would recommend
