Please post more than just the title.

We don't need a War and Peace essay on the film, but at least give a couple of sentences of good and bad points and even throw in a rating if you want to, as long as you give some rationale.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World

I've watched this film about ten times already. I guess I'm just a fanatic for this film because it was really loads of fun. Props to the retro gaming visuals  icon14.gif  9.5/10

Excellent film, and just watched it last night. I actually thought Scott Pilgrim used to be a comic book series with the way the films started. It's definitely one of those films that I could keep re-watching though...nothing as original as this has come out for ages now.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure it was a comic first.

Well, I watched Machete tonight.

user posted image

I was surprised. With Steven Seagal in the cast, one might worry.

The movie is about a Mexican Federale who has to run from Mexico to the US. It is pretty much your basic action movie, and follows the standard social hot button fear of whatever is hot at the time of production. This movie has the illegal immigration, border crossing issue as it's focus.

Where it really scored points with me was how it knew it was just 'another action movie' and managed to sprinkle in some really light hearted moments along with an almost straight up silliness during the climactic action battle.

I really have to say this movie pulled off a great balance of action and humor without being a parody or obvious. It is almost hard to explain. Throughout the whole movie you think you are watching a good action movie, with a good plot, good acting, and all of that and then every once in awhile they throw you a funny curve ball. And I'm not talking stupid one liner curve balls - no stupid, action movie, one liners in this film. It's all very subtle. Like when Cheech Marin(as a priest) offers Machete(the main character) a cigar and says "its Cuban" and Machete responds with "Mexican" and Cheech opens up a different humidor with cigar sized joints. Not like they were blunts or anything. They were like big cheech and chong joints. Like I said - all very subtle, so they didn't make a point of it or make in an obvious scene.

They did a fine job with this movie. If you want to see some good action stuff with some good blood, gore, and splatter shots that also has an underlying layer of humor and satire this movie fits the bill.

Black Swan is not this great film people are making it out to be. It is so slow and the tension Afronsky builds up, is lost by the over acting of Natalie Portman. Yeah, I said it, Natalie Portman overacts throughout the whole film. She puts in a sh*t performance. Of course, she will win the Oscar because she is garnering the most attention for this film.

Don't get me wrong, I love Natalie Portman and I forgive her for the Star Wars Prequels. However, Black Swan is overrated. I think the biggest disappointment in the whole film was the lesbian sex scene. It just felt forced. I don't think they should have kept it in the script as it adds nothing to either Nina or Lily. It doesn't even create a further rift between Nina and her mother. Speaking of her mother, that relationship comes off incestuous and f*cked up, which I am sure is Afronsky's intention but once again it feels forced.

The only redeeming aspect of Black Swan would be Vincent Cassel.

On Machete. That movie was total sh*t. I started watching it and got fed up with the over bearing 'WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE BAD, ILLEGALS IN AMERICA ARE THE GOOD, KILL ALL WHITES' message Rodriguez was infusing it with. Honestly, Rodriguez is a good director but he f*cked up with Machete. Machete should have stayed as a faux trailer in Grindhouse.

Also, if no one is aware. As he was campaigning against Texas and Arizona over their stance on illegal immigrants, Rodriguez was also asking both states to help out financially with Machete. I know this topic isn't for politics but when the director does something like that he and his film can get f*cked.

Were we suppose to take it serious? I really viewed it as subtle satire. I honestly, don't think it was suppose to have any real message in it.

I agree, just plain funny and actually not bad i thought, if your looking for a sort of Action-packed thriller with fake blood and gore.

I too saw Requiem for a Dream on the TV last night. Great film, I really liked the breakneck pace and the constant flitting between each of the main character's stories.

However the ending left one stone unturned: Tyrone didn't have a false happy ending.

Feces, I mean Species Quadrilogy. First three movies were ok, brought back childhood memories, but the fourth one was horrible. Lame story, nothing is really going on until the last 15-20 minutes of the movie.

So I'd never actually seen American Psycho before, I think I'd dismissed it before as being considered mediocre. Over time it became apparent many of you thought it was really great so I figured I'd give it a look. I actually quite enjoyed it, Bateman as a character is an interesting statement on the nature of sociopaths and how they seemingly fit in on 1980s Wall Street.

What I didn't realize until watching because people seem to be in denial is that it appears that Bateman isn't a serial killer at all, just a delusion psychopath with fantasies of murder. People seem so enamored with Bateman as a character that they choose to ignore the very strong (although somewhat ambiguous) evidence that he didn't kill anyone. In the beginning I was confused by how easily he gets away with murder considering how poorly he does to conceal it, but it made sense in the end.

Watched Detour online yesterday.

A guy hithhikes from NYC to LA to be with his girl, and gets a lift from a man who dies of a heart attack. Afraid of being accused of his murder he hides the body in the desert and takes his car and identity. Things get worse when he picks up a woman who had hitched a lift off the dead man a couple of days earlier.

Really enjoyable film with dark undertones. No big names, great performances or technical merit, but unforgettable because of the dark mood that envelpoes all the scenes.

Been going through Arnie's filmography recently. Last night was Eraser. I love how Arnie's never been wary of dystopian films (Total Recall, Running Man) or ones that deal with futuristic sh*t like this.

There's nothing much to write home about in terms of characters or plot. My version was remastered (albeit sloppily) so the special effects were updated for the time of release, which makes them dated as of now.

Also Vanessa Williams is/was one of the hottest mulattos evar.

A Bronx Tale

This movie was Robert DeNiros directorial debut. It's about a young boy befriending a gangster in 1960's Brooklyn, New York. I only caught the second half as it was on Spike, but it was very good even from what I saw. I would suggest this movie. icon14.gif

Love Eraser. Used to be one of my most watched movies when I was younger. I always wanted one of those x ray guns, sweet as they are. Plus James Caan plays a good villain! icon14.gif

I love how the guns they used are actually working prototypes in today's military.

Tonight was Last Action Hero. It's an awesome companion piece to True Lies, both self-deprecating to the industry that Arnie was such a huge part of, but both going about it in a different way. I totally respect his balls in the same way Brad Pitt tried very hard not to get bookended as an actor. Even though as it turned out, he was essentially the same character but with camp instead of cheese.

Even though True Lies gets all the accolades, I enjoy them both equally. The effort they went into in order to highlight the tropes that other movies fall into and then use them shamelessly is always great fun

I just happened to watch True Lies the other day myself. Very funny film. I don't really have anything bad to say about the film. Bill Paxton is absolutely great in it, I wish he was in more films.

I just watched Orson Welles' 'Touch of Evil' today. It's a film about a murder that takes places on the Mexican/American border and a Mexican cop is put onto the investigation along with a crooked American detective. The film mostly revolves around the friction between these two characters but also focuses on the Mexican cop's American wife played by Janet Leigh (And when you see this film you'll find that she doesn't have a good track record with motels tounge.gif) Charlton Heston is great as the Mexican cop and Orson Welles literally dominates the frame every time he pops up as the crooked American detective (and not just because he is fat). I've only seen one other Orson Welles film before this (Citizen Kane) but I now want to watch more. I love the way this film is shot, there are lots of low angle shots used by Welles to emphasise his character's power and there are some great tracking shots used throughout the film (most obvious one being the opening) I would seriously recommend this film to anybody who has not yet seen it.

I was going to mention Last Action Hero in my last post. This is another one of my favorite Arnold movies along with Predator and Terminator 2. You can tell that the movie is kind of satirical and set around making people laugh, but at the same time there is a lot of action. This movie is in my DVD collection and I would suggest you give it a watch. It's not for everyone, but I enjoy it from time to time. As for True Lies, I've never seen Jamie Lee Curtis look so good. icon14.gif

I just watched The Shining. All I have to say is it didn't help that I watched it at about midnight. I don't usually get scared much with horror movies but this one was pretty f*cked up. Good movie but I won't watch it again, ever.

@Imnicus (bellow me), alright. I'll do that in the future.

Yes, yes you do as there are many different films you could be referring to. Also, the you are suppose to post the TITLE of the last film YOU saw and what you thought about it.

You posted:

That means jack sh*t. Why is it pretty good? Was it the acting? The script?

You have to expand. One line isn't good enough. So, try again when you reply to this.

You will want to say something like:

I watched ( Insert movie title ) recently, The basic story is of ( insert 2 -3 sentences describing the film ). I enjoyed this film because of ( insert 2 - 3 sentences of things you enjoyed about the film.

You can then recommend the film to us, the other film going forum members, or you can tell is it is a waste of time. You might even want to post of a youtube clip or start a discussion on the film. Just don't write:

I saw it too yesterday. Pretty good.

I just watched Moon yesterday on HBO. Really amazing film! 10/10!

You love both Sams right from the start and the song that plays throughout the film and credits is mesmerizing. The tune is so simple yet so hauntingly beautiful.

Killing of Roscharch? I'm okay with that but that scene was god awful. The Comedian stole the show even though he was dead at the start of the film.[/spoilers] 7/10

Both Bret Easton Ellis and Mary Harron disagree with this assessment. They both state the murders are real. He's a killer.

I liked the fighting scenes in the movie, they were really cool, like really really cool, and like you said above the ending was f*cking lame What kind of person would rather die than lie that is god damn cheesy i gotta say

I swear they have superpowers though, the way they fight, i really hate on high budget films usually with tom cruise (since he doesn't do martial arts), the fighting scenes are filmed using like 20 different angles and it really is hard to see what is going on let alone appreciate the fighting moves going on.

The coolest fighting movie i have ever scene probably IP man.

Well I'd like to see their rationale for thinking he is not a killer. Most if not all the evidence at the end point to him not being a killer. The ATM telling him to feed it a cat, the cop cars blowing up with one shot, his crimes become increasingly outlandish. There is no way he can get away with a crime like that, he kills a girl by throwing a chainsaw at her, he does this in a public place. Art is bigger than the artist, even if they make up their mind about the film after the fact. If Lynch said that Eraserhead was about Vietnam or something stupid than we can't just automatically assume that is what it really means.

A couple days ago I watched Cannibal Holocaust for the first time (the censored cut)

Even if you've never seen it, you've all probably heard of it. It has a reputation for being one of the most vile things committed to film (at least original version anyway). The cut that I watched had most of the animal cruelty cut out and some of the gore. Half of this film is shot like a "found footage" film, so think Cloverfield or The Blair Witch project as we see what happens to a group of young filmmakers as they head into the Amazon to try and document a cannibal tribe. The other half follows an anthropologist as he leads a search team for the filmmakers and his discovery. The film is ok, it's not very gripping to be honest, but it does have a bit of social commentary similar to the George A Romero zombie films if you're into that. I would probably say the best thing about the film was the special effects. Some of the gore actually looks pretty convincing and at the point where one guy gets his penis cut off it actually looks fairly real. At 90 minutes, it's not a long watch so you may as well give it a watch if you happen to catch it on TV.

Also, I really love the theme music. It's calm and haunting at the same time.
