Thoughts On The Last Movie You've Seen

Please post more than just the title.

We don't need a War and Peace essay on the film, but at least give a couple of sentences of good and bad points and even throw in a rating if you want to, as long as you give some rationale.

I'm not one to bitch about acting but the acting in Episode II is atrocious, although I suspect it has more to do with George Lucas's stiff dialogue than the actors.

Just terrible direction in general. That dialog could have come across somewhat naturally, but the characters are often standing around like cardboard cutout. Perhaps it's a side effect of digital sets. But it's just hard to watch.

As a Star Wars fan, who actually likes the Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith, I don't like Attack of the Clones. I get the feeling that Lucas didn't do any pre-production on it, even if he did. It's just a mess.

Raising Arizona. It's very easily my favorite movie by the Coen brothers.

I've loved that movie since I was a kid but most people I talk to either really like it or just weren't on board with the humor and storytelling.

I just watched 'The Town' With Ben Affleck, he also directed the movie. I really enjoyed it, I havent really ever paid much attention to him in the past, I have never seen a film because he was in it or anything like that. I just saw the trailer and though id give it a watch. I must say i really enjoyed it, his acting is pretty good, he seems to have aged well too and matured from previous roles.

Story was pretty decent, kept us on the edge of our seats, some good action in there too.

Give it a watch.

Apothecaries Weight
the whole idea of the movie is pretty stupid, but the movie wasn't so bad.

The movie is based on a true story.

I saw it yesterday and thought it started off great, but it started to fall to pieces around the end.

It was over like that .

I was expecting a lot more from a story which had a lot more potential.

As for Tom Hardy, he was the acting highlight of the whole thing for me, he has a great quality about him that I can't quite put my finger on. I thought this was the first time I'd seen his work, but looking him up he was mother-f*cking Bronson, and in Layer Cake, and in Band of Brothers (bit part). The man's a chameleon!

"You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling."

So recently my Xbox was out for a day and thus began my own little movie marathon by rewatching some new and old movies.

Zombieland

Very enjoyable film. This isn't just a great zombie movie, it's a great roadtrip movie! You start to love the characters right from the very start. 9/10

Scott Pilgrim VS The World

I've watched this film about ten times already. I guess I'm just a fanatic for this film because it was really loads of fun. Props to the retro gaming visuals icon14.gif 9.5/10

Taken

First time watching it yesterday, Liam Nelson was perfect for the role. But the ending was pretty lame though, I expected more conflict from this rollercoaster ride. 8/10

Just finished watching Star Wars Episode III: Return of the Sith, as I've been rewatching the prequels throughout Jan on ITV. I do think it's the best of the prequels, but it still ain't great. There's a lot less of the camp slapstick once sh*t actually starts happening, which is a plus. The first two prequels had way too much of this and it detracted from the narrative I think.

The whole shtick of trying to highlight the similarities between the Jedi and Sith goals and their weaknesses fell down over itself though. It's an interesting idea, with both sides wanting peace and just using different methodologies to achieve it. I couldn't help but wish that the political differences (dictatorships vs democracies) should've been more prevalent rather than just good vs evil. It's just brushed over with one line by Padme about liberty.

Similarly, for all the labouring of Palpatine's speech about the two sides being so similar just gets slapped in the face by the visuals and styling: the Sith dress in all black, cover their faces, are covered in wounds and wrinkles, have evil eyes etc. Not to mention the fact that General Grievous, and Obi Wans fight with him, seems to be lifted straight from an anime. Some of the styling's bang on though, specfically the stuff that leads into the original trilogy: stuff like the clone troops helmets gradually becoming more storm-trooper like and a lot of the vehicles the clone troops/the (soon to be) rebels use.

Hayden Christensen still can't act when not shouting though, Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor pretty much carry him through it.

I've been tempted to buy the prequel trilogy ever time I see them at the mall, but I never do. I think my favorite out of those three though is the Phantom Menace.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

A bit of a slow start, gets into it's groove about 20 minutes in. Interesting film, even if the story is quite predictable.

And I guess these hundreds of poll topics you make with just one sentence in them are so much better? sarcasm.gif

Anyway, last film I managed to watch was Growns Ups. Know it's not exactly new, but am currently trying to catch up with alot of old films that I've never seen. The verdict is that it's actually a really good film, and not too OTT as you'd expect when you get a full cast of comedy actors, as many other films do. I think that's the main thing I enjoyed about the film, as I was expecting it to be another comedy where they try to put hundreds of jokes in, but it's seriously chilled out in that aspect, and a really good film overall.

Inception sucked like nothing has ever sucked before

Sorry, didn't see this before posting last time. Anyway, watched Inception a few months back and found it to be one of those films where they purposely try to f*ck your mind up so much that it just gets stupid and pointless. 5 minutes in and I was already confused, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone as to why I was confused, but If you've watched it you'll know what I mean.

I agree: it tries too hard.

I like a movie that I completely don't suspect, then there's a twist, and I'm like WOAH.

I went to Inception expecting to be tricked.

Black Swan

Went to see this at the cinema last night and let me open with this: if you plan on watching this film, see it at the cinema now, not on DVD (unless you have a huge surround sound system). More on this later.

Haunting, edge of the seat stuff. Never lets you relax, there's always something around the corner keeping you on edge. Wanted to see this for a while- I actually downloaded it but decided to wait to see it in the cinema- because of my Vincent Cassel fad. He is at his slimey, provocative best. The supporting cast (including a great Mila Kunis) are equally brilliant. The star of the show is, of course, Natalie Portman; using the Raging Bull rule (that being if an actor puts their body through severe amounts of physical trauma so they are perfect for the role like De Niro did for Raging Bull they have a great shot at a major award) I would say Portman has to be one of the favourites for the Best Actress Oscar. You don't for a second believe she is not a dedicated ballerina who has worked her whole life in the trade.

From a technical view, I don't think I've ever seen better use of mirrors in a movie. At first I thought the mirrors were going to cause a lot of trouble for the camera guys but you soon realise they integral to the plot and used to great effect. I'm sure anyone who's seen the film will agree with me. The music is superb (I might be really sad and get the soundtrack) and, like I said before, adds to the drama and suspense if heard through giant cinema speakers (or a very good home system). There is also a very well executed CGI sequence towards the end (again, if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean) which I think deserves some recognition.

It's hard to discuss the plot without giving away spoilers. But for sure, this is not a film purely about ballet. It's a great thriller that I'd recommend for everybody to watch at least once. Whether everybody would like it is another thing; I believe it is one of those films that will divide opinion (very much like the film it reminds me of which I really can't say without potentially spoiling it). That was certainly the case at the place I saw it. Me personally, I thought it was amazing.

9/10

Also: The Academy Awards I could see this film picking up would be: Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Visual Effects. Anyone who's seen it agree?

Inception- This is far by the most overrated movie I've seen since Avatar. The plot was boring and un-engaging, the characters weren't in any way lovable I honestly didn't care what happened to them. The ending was predictable Once he introduced those totem things it was obvious what would happen at the end. The commercials for Inception were so wrong it wasn't mind blowing nor worth a 2nd watch infact I fell asleep for 20 mins during it. Overall I give it 2/10 just because Michael Caine is in it

Yeah, it's one of those movies that not everyone can get the humor, and it's hard to explain to those that don't. The same thing goes for the Hudsucker Proxy.

The Hangover.

Got exactly what I expected really. A story that provides the right scenario for some good laughs and a few classic scenes.

The hangover was like a pussified frat version of fear and loathing with any depth and meaning removed, it was about as funny as 'epic movie'

I actually really enjoyed The Hangover... confused.gif

Anyway, just watched Seven Pounds, and I must say that it's one of the only films that has really got my emotions going. I don't want to say too much, but I'd highly reccmend it to everyone. It starts off quite slow, but purposely does it so as to not give too much away and spoil the ending for you.

Casablanca

Casablanca

Humphrey Bogart stars as Rick in the classic movie Casablanca.

Casablanca is a classic, sorry Pico it is in B&W so you should avoid it.

If you don't know anything about Casablanca, I am truly sorry for you. You are missing out on one of Hollywood's Greatest Films from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Yes, it was rushed into production due to the War and the inevitable invasion of Africa by US Forces, but some how the cast, crew, writers and director crafted a clever, engaging and romantic film.

It has been awhile since I last saw Casablanca but seeing it now cleaned up and on DVD just shows how well this film has stood against time. It is as visually engaging now as when I first saw it. Humphrey Bogart puts in the performance of a lifetime. He captures the spirit of being an American Ex Pat in Foreign lands so well. Yet, he still embodies the American spirit and ideals.

I could go on but I would rather everyone took the time to watch Casablanca for themselves*. Enjoy this film because it truly is art in motion.

*Pico not included.

Les Bronzés Font du Ski 7/10

I thought this French comedy was quite hilarious. After the premier film, Les Bronzés, a group of friends go to spend their holidays in the Alps, where everything that can go wrong does go wrong. It embodied the same humor and ridiculousness of National Lampoon Vacation movies. If you're up for a silly comedy and don't want to rehash films you've already seen. check out this one.

and for the record. I thought the Hangover was pretty funny too.

Excellent film, and just watched it last night. I actually thought Scott Pilgrim used to be a comic book series with the way the films started. It's definitely one of those films that I could keep re-watching though...nothing as original as this has come out for ages now.

I agree. Everyone told me to see it and that I would love it. I watched it and felt meh at best.

Since I quoted you and since you also said you are going to re-watch ,Casablanca. I grew up watching it with my folks as a young person too. Make sure to make time to watch it now that you are older.

The last movie I saw was whatever bad SciFi channel movie I watched this past weekend. So bad that I don't even remember the title.

I was hoping to get some xbox time in tonight, but my wife shot me down saying we are going to watch a movie. I'll report back...maybe colgate.gif
