Please post more than just the title.

We don't need a War and Peace essay on the film, but at least give a couple of sentences of good and bad points and even throw in a rating if you want to, as long as you give some rationale.

Fantastic Mr Fox

I caught Fantastic Mr Fox in the past few days (my viewing got split in two when something came up), and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I'd dismissed the film when it first got released thinking it wouldn't match up to the children's book just like the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's actually quite a charming film though, and as far as I can remember, quite true to the story with a bit more added at the beginning and end. The most stand out point is the animation, it has a sort of quality where it blurs the line between computer animation and stop-motion and the style it's done in is very reminiscent of the really old and quite creepy clay-motion cartoons when the medium was still young. I can't think of a word that describes it better than charming. Second to the animation is George Clooney as the titular Mr Fox. He brings his trademark coolness to the role and really pulls it off, the character is exactly like I imagined he was when I was 5 or so.

Harold and Kumar : White Castle

This is an excelent film that will make you piss yourselves, well not exactly but it's pretty funny, the two main characters are called Harold Lee and Kumar Patel, and after a days work in the office, they decide to light one up and get totally high, so they get hungary but instead of going to Burger King of whatever, they want to go to white castle as it is very high rated and looks really good, but along the way, they realy have an adventure.

Escape from Guantanamo bay is even better!

Me and a group of friends went to go and see Tron Legacy for my birthday on the 30th. All of us except one person enjoyed it although we all had the same thoughts on certain parts of it and all felt the film could perhaps of benefited from being a bit shorted.

Having not seen the original Tron I personally didn't really know what to expect from it, I knew of some what the original had spawned, the Lightcycles, the Neon Lights, the Disc Battles so I did go into it expecting something a bit mindless for an hour and a half and I did come out with a feeling that maybe the film took itself a bit too seriously. As I've previously said I did enjoy it but I wasn't expecting it to be as serious as it was in places. Would also like to say that for a film which boasted some pretty cool effects I felt very very underwhelmed by the 3D within it and thought they could have done a hell of a lot more in that regard.

One thing that definitely stood out was the soundtrack, absolutely fantastic and fit the film perfectly.

First point is sort of silly - A Time To Kill takes place far after the civil rights movement, and I think that's the point. tounge.gif

Oh it's probably been a decade since I watched it so I'll take the hit on the timestamp.

Though hearing Sam L say, "YES! they deserve to die and I hope they burn in hell!" is still one of the favorite lines ever.

Oh and Kevin Spacey's in it as well, worth a mention.

@Robinski: I wasn't sure what to expect with Mr. Fox either but we ended up buying the BluRay as it was quite quirky and charming.

@<((((><: I'm still a sucker for Adam Sandler movies after all these years, I watched Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Water Boy a ridiculous amount of times so I'll probably give that one a watch just the same.

I just watched Repo Men. I found the story to be interesting and unique though the numerous references to Blade Runner did not go amiss. The second half of the film felt a bit like a cheesy action movie but the twist ending could be used to explain this. Overall I felt the film left the viewer on a very sombre note; a ending that aluded to George Orwell's 1984 via a sense of despair and defeat.

@Waddy/ascii fish. My lady and I enjoyed Grown Ups too. Much like 'Hot Tub Time Machine' I hate to admit it is the type of film that fits a certain age demographic in order to be funny. The too old to be breast fed kid was great.

I watched 'Car Wash' on cable last night. It is a must see classic 70s movie in case anyone hasn't seen it. It follows the standard format of rich white man keeping down the poor black man. I wouldn't really call it a blacksploitation film. It is a bit more true to life then exploitation.

It has a great level of funk and even some musical parts. The young George Carlin is great, and the young Richard Pryor playing the money corrupt preacher is perfect for the time and feelings of the time.

Best line in the movie came from my wife - "I'm so happy I grew up in the 70s. Everyone was so much happier when they were all doing drugs."

If you have a list of classic movies you plan to watch, you should consider adding 'Car Wash'.

Pretty good but it felt like it didn't get anywhere. I like the way it was filmed in black and white, some of the shots are epic. Great soundtrack too.

A very enjoyable film with a few flaws. It takes place in France, 1944 and centres around two assassination plots to kill Hitler, one by a Jewish cinema owner and the other by a team of violent, Jewish American special forces.

One problem I felt with the film is that it somehow felt like it was holding back, almost supressed. However, at some points this worked in it's favour as the writing was sharp, particularly in the psychotic SS Colonel, Hans Landa.

The film had moments of very extreme violence, including a scalping scene which I wasn't expecting.

Overall the film was great and enjoyable and I would recommend it to any fan of Tarantino's work.

A great, yet complicated film. This is a French film about a young Arab sent to prison for assault, once he gets there he is forced to kill another prisoner for the Corsican Mafia, he then rises through the ranks of the prison and builds an empire on both sides of the walls.

I found this film somewhat hard to follow, although I did watch it very late at night.

Overall this film was very good, brutal and effective.

A good film, although it never rose beyond being a romp. The film is set on a London council estate where an elderly ex-Royal Marine decides to fight back against the violent youths who are causing terror on the estate.

The film felt quite silly somehow and I couldn't take it seriously, that said I did enjoy watching it and never really felt laboured or boring. However, I always felt it was trying to send a message but failed in it's attempts at this.

I watched 'The Other Guys' last night.

user posted image

It was as expected, since it is from the same people that did 'Talladega Nights' and such. Will Ferrell plays a meek kind of police guy, while Mark Wahlberg plays an over the top angry type of cop. It did get stale pretty quick, but like I said, the movie is what I expected. My lady and I chuckled throughout, but when it ended we both pretty much said "meh". It was funny enough, but not one that I would tell my friends to see.

Even though there have been GTA references in other movies in the past, the GTA reference in this movie felt pretty spot on. The scene is them driving through NY and it was starting to look like a GTA IV style shot with cars getting hit and flying all over the place and then they bust out the the GTA reference. The other interesting GTA connection is when they are on the Chelsea pier golf driving range. I swear they took it straight from TBoGT.

That movie was god awful, the only reason I went was to not seem like a snobby douchebag. I did like the bar scene though. I thought it actually was pretty cool. I also really enjoyed Sam L. Jackson and The Rock jumping off a roof to fall to their gruesome death. That was the only part I really laughed at.

Here's the scene I was referring to:

Hahaha Trips, looks me you and me have the same taste in movies! I liked The Other Guys too, watching it again tonight I think.

Anyway, Watched the Social Network last night, really enjoyed it. Not sure what % was true but it was a very interesting story. Never knew the Napster guy was involved or anything and how an idea spawned in your dorm room can make something so big. Well worth the watch if people are interested in that type of thing.

Recently, I've realized how many good and classic movies every man should see there are that I haven't seen, I been watching movies almost everyday for the last 2 weeks (holidays) and every weekend this autumn, here are my summarized opinions on some of them:

user posted image

The movie follows two LAPD narcs for a 24-hour period, during which Detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) is to evaluate Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke), a LAPD cop who is looking to advance in his career and become a detective, like Alonzo.

During these 24 hours Alonzo foists Hoyt into his plan to rob a local drug dealer for money that he owes to the Russian Mob.

Like always, Antoine Fuqua's direction is top-notch, as is the script written by David Ayer, and including Washington's Oscar-winning acting and a strong display from Ethan Hawke, the movie definetly deserves it's spot as one of my favorite movies, and I strongly recommend for everyone who hasn't seen it yet to do so.

user posted image

Another collaboration between director Antoine Fuqua and Ethan Hawke, BET-, and Black Reel Awards-nominee Brooklyn's Finest follows the stories of three NYPD policemen (Hawke, Don Cheadle and Richard Gere) and an ex-druglord recently released from prison (Wesley Snipes), whose stories eventually link together in the notorious neighborhood of Brownsville in eastern Brooklyn, New York.

Another first class direction by Fuqua combined with the quality acting by the four main actors, Brooklyn's Finest is one of the (if not the) best movies of 2010 and is definetly worth watching.

user posted image

In the aftermath of a police accident encountering a family of NYPD policemen (Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, and Noah Emmerich), one of the members of the family, Ray Tierney (Norton) discovers unjust, dirty and corrupted sides of his family, eventually leading to several legal problems and strong fights within the family.

Although being pretty much an average corrupt cop-story, Pride and Glory manages to stand out from other movies of it's type.

However, I personally don't see this as something to thank director Gavin O'Connor about but screenwriter Joe Carnahan and the main actors, some of them being Oscar-, and Golden Globe winners.

The Town is a 2010 film directed by Ben Affleck who also stars as one of the main actors of the movie, along with Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall and others.

The movie follows the story of four lifelong friends and crime partners from the notorious neighborhood of Charlestown, Boston.

In the beginning of the film, the quartet rob a bank, and soon after the robbery, Doug (Affleck) begins a relationship with Claire (Hall), who they took as a hostage in the robbery.

Later on, the four rob the Fenway Park, a basketball stadion in Boston, known as the home of the Boston Red Sox, against Doug's desire.

However, the heist doesn't go as planned, resulting in heartbreak and quite a few other problems.

The Town is the third work of direction for Ben Affleck and he successes in the part quite well, without forgetting good actor skills.

Jeremy Renner stands out from the rest of the crew, even getting a Golden Globe nominee for the best supporting actor.

Along with titles such as Brooklyn's Finest, Inception and many more, The Town is one of my personal favorite movies of last year, and I can recommend it strongly.

Hook

I bought this movie recently and it brought back a lot of childhood memories.

It's about a man who goes to england and his children get kidnapped. He has to fly to never neverland to get his kids back from Captain Hook. The twist is that he doesn't know he's Peter Pan.

This movie is an all around family classic and I would recommend to anyone. icon14.gif

Hook f*cking rocks. RUFIO! RUFIO! RUFIO!

Training Day is crap, in my opinion. It was just too slow and the story just never pulled me in. I like Hawke and Washington, but I didn't like that movie much at all.

The Town was surprisingly good. I liked Ben's performance in it, for sure.

The Other Guys was truly. Mark seemed to take it completely seriously, as if he didn't know it was a comedy in any way. And Will's jokes were pretty sh*tty. The funniest part was the "AMERICA!" scene that lasted a whole 2 seconds.

A Prophet was pretty good, although a little slow. I'd recommend it if you're willing to pay good attention. Not that it gets complicated or anything, but you need to really observe it to soak it all in.

Inglourious Basterds...

If I had to pick one movie to be my top movie of all time or some one would shoot me in the face, it'd be Inglourious Basterds, for sure. I won't say it is my favorite because I've seen so many amazing movies, but this one just stands out. Awesome story line, bad ass characters and great dialogue all supported by some of the best acting I've ever seen. Christoph Waltz, who plays Col. Hans Landa, was simply amazing. Such a well defined character that you like and hate at the same time. To expand on that a bit, spoiler tags may be useful:

I love the way he comes full circle in his encounters. For example, the dread that he brings to LaPadite and Hammersmark in their confrontational scenes. When he first approaches them there's tension. While this is going Landa stays calm and collected, joking and shying away from the subject at hand. He brings up random things and then suddenly gets to the point of his conversation in which he completely calms them out on their sh*t. The one that seemed to get away, and twice at that, is Shosanna. At the beginning and at the restaurant. But holy sh*t, he created some awesome tension in that restaurant scene because by this point you've learned his style of confronting people and assume that he ordered the milk on purpose, offered her a cigarette on purpose... and you're just waiting for that moment where he busts her out. And it never happens, just adding more depth to his character by showing that he isn't completely infallible.

Aside from that, Waltz does an amazing job with his awesome multi-lingual scenes. The accents, from what I can tell, are excellent and he seems to be able to fluently go in and out of various languages with ease. Truly an amazing actor.

Who is Waddy.?

I must admit I was somewhat partial to the ascii fish. confused.gif

*As you get older and busier you'll find it more and more difficult to watch even a decent movie more than once, I think I've watched Inglorious Basterds and Training Day at least 3 or 4 times each. Great flicks.

*The Other Guys is something I'll watch. I know what to expect , I know what not to expect and I'll probably laugh at a few things just the same.

Yesterday I had a few strong drinks and a late lunch with my son and took him to see..

Gulliver's Travels

Now don't get me wrong I don't hate on Jack Black. I enjoy a lot of things he's been in, Tenacious D and as far as kids movies go, I loved the crap out of Kung Fu Panda. Still, I just had a feeling this movie was going to be tough to get through so I got a bit buzzed and carted myself in there because he's been bugging me nonstop to go see it.

The first...Mmmm I'd say 80% of the movie was doable, it was just Jack Black being Jack Black with some typical Big Guy, Tiny People type shenanigans and it co starred Jason Segel from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man who I usually find to be pretty funny. Anywho, you get lured into thinking well..ya'knooow maybe this isn't SO bad for a kids movie.. then like it just goes full retard in the last 15 minutes with this big cheesy musical number and just everyone in the entire film acting like complete asshats. It's as if they REALLLLLY want to sell it to you in the last breath and they go way overboard with the finale. I won't explain it beyond that, you just have to see it to believe it.

When/if you do, please confirm my disgust.

The fact that Jack Black was going to be in the remake of the movie gave me initial hopes, but then I saw the poster and got disappointed, then I saw the trailer and realized I probably won't ever watch it.

You gave me more initiative to stay away from it icon14.gif

Watched Easy A just five minutes ago. I hate hipsters, and this film thankfully didn't delve too deeply into the angsty generation Z awkward coming of age sh*t that most teen films nowadays are displaying. In fact, it kept quite a great homage to some older coming of age films and books throughout the film that made me laugh to be honest.

The film is about a girl named Olive, as one little fib snowballs into her becoming the school tramp - even though it's all a lie. Couple of good jokes here and there, and the characters in the film - for the most part - are pretty quirky and hilarious. Some parts were too overly trying, but overall I liked the film and will probably catch it again tomorrow.

Shallow Hal is pretty good. There's a handful of others that he's pretty good in.

Never seen Nacho Libre, for some reason I've got a feeling I'll highly dislike it.

It's a bit of a ritual of mine when I'm interstate to kill time between checkout and flyout with a movie. The other day I saw Tron in 3D in Sydney.

No matter how cheesy, tacky, campy or overblown it could have been, I was going to love it. Full stop, anything with Daft Punk is good in my eyes. The most fun bit was the conversation with my friends who did not like it so much afterwards. My one retort that trumped all was "it was worth it for the spank bank material"

Indeed, Gem in full makeup and that tighty whitey costume is macktastic. Olivia Wilde is just wow.

Really wish I had seen the first one, though. I felt (and knew) that I missed so many callbacks. Like the fact that 'Tron' is the name of an actual character. I know right?

Err, last movie I've seen? Stalag 17. Directed by Billy Wilder and starring William Holden, a prisoner of war camp where William Holden's character is suspected by his bunk mates as being a secret German informer. Excellent film. Despite it being a POW film there are many elements of comedy (as you would expect from Billy Wilder) there is a real sense of camaraderie between the prisoned soldiers (none more so than when one soldier does a poor impression of Betty Grable, wig and all, to cheer up his friend in the camp) the German soldiers have that clumsy oafishness to them and Holden is on witty form. I highly recommend you watch this film.

last film I saw was Les Visiteurs, featuring Jean Reno (you may know him from The Professional). he and his side-kick drink a magic potion and are transported from the middle ages to the year 1992, where hilarity ensues.

before that, i'd been binging on the Alien trilogy (excluding the tripe that is Alien: Resurrection..)

Don't mean to sound like a miserable git but I think Jack Black is awful. Anything with his name attached is always a must-avoid for me.

Last film I watched was the second part to Mesrine: Public Enemy Number 1 (part 2) based on the real life gangster Jacques Mesrine. I thought it was brilliant crime/action film and it's a bonus knowing it's based on a true guy. He did some messed up stuff like escaping from prison 4 times! You have to give it to him. Mesrine is played by Vincent Cassel (La Haine) - one of my favourite actors.
