Please post more than just the title.

We don't need a War and Peace essay on the film, but at least give a couple of sentences of good and bad points and even throw in a rating if you want to, as long as you give some rationale.

Mister Pink

snip

It's noir. It has style, humor, drama and heart. It has Ralph Fiennes starring opposite of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. It's a dreamy blend of light hearted well written characters with fantastic chemistry, talented actors playing off of each other really selling us on their bond and relationship. And beneath all that is a story of punishment and forgiveness, of second chances. Just a good bit of everything is in here and i'd highly recommend this for anyone looking for something a bit on the lighter side but still with sufficient depth and story.

If you enjoyed In Bruges I would highly recommend 6 Shooter, McDonagh's first film which is a short. He won an Oscar for it. It stars Brendan Gleeson, has appearance from his son Dohmnail Gleeson and stars Ruairi Conroy (whom I met on a train a couple of years ago which was weird). His brother wrote The Guard and Calvary. All staring Brendan Gleeson, lol

25th Hour is one of favourite films. It's definitively in my top 5. I'm often surprised that it not many people I know have seen it.

I've seen it ages ago on TV and occasionally I remembered it but could never identify the movie or remembered enough of it to make a 'What movie is this?' post. I only knew I liked it a lot. Just a few weeks ago I was watching Chez Lindsay's favorite movies list and she featured this. So yay! Decades-old mystery resolved. Also, that girl has taste.

Saw Life yesterday. Well... It's Alien in Gravity setting.

Got triggered as a space nerd many times, but liked the work of actors.

Got distracted the whole morning by thinking about all those things gone wrong.

Had a nightmare about said alien taking my job.

The movie compromises my operations. :D

I love this movie so much I've lost count how many times I've watched it. I hope the sequel releasing next year is just as good. If not better.

Dude, YES. One of my favorite Disney movies, which is saying something.

Anyway, the last two movies I've seen are Django Unchained and The Revenant. Loved them both.

I'd seen this on the news and American Greed. Jonah Hill carried a pretty entertaining account of gaming the US defense procurement practices. Bradley Cooper was on point during his limited screen time. I'm also looking forward to seeing more of Ana de Armas...

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has proven quite divisive in the Star Wars fanbase. But for me personally, I loved it.

It was something quite daring and different for the franchise; reminiscent of that cancelled 1313 game they showed several years back [speaking of which, this has me pretty psyched for that action adventure Star Wars game Visceral is making]. I'v seen some complaints directed towards the characters and such, and while some of them have a point, I liked them as a whole. I really liked Jyn, Cassian and K2 who's just like, the ultimate droid y'all. Dagget from The Dark Knight Rises isn't a particularly compelling villain and Mads who is fantastic in this as always should have had a bit more screen time.

I liked the action, though the acting was spot on [and Felicity Jones is mega hot.] but there was certainly something holding this movie back from true greatness, and it also proved its greatest strength.

For better or worse, its a Star Wars film. It's very clear that the film wants to play up the complexity of the Rebel/Empire conflict and delve deeper into how morally muddy war can be, this is sort of looked at with Jyn's pragmatic views towards the Empire and Cassian's role in the rebellion but it's just merely brushed upon and I feel because of the SW brand image the film makers were held back in what they could do.

They still did great with what they had but I wish they gave it that small nudge forward; at least I hope we'll see even more daring projects in future spin offs.

Trivia: did you know Jyn translates to devil in Arabic?

Idiocracy (2006)

A very funny comedy centering around a man and a woman in the present day, the former is a soldier and the latter a prositute. They are artificially frozen for a top secret US army project, and are promptly forgot about.

They awake 500 or so years in the future to find that the IQ of the planet has taken a nose dive and they are now the smartest people in the world. Now they are the only hope for the world to be a little less stupid.

A very underrated satire which holds up to multiple viewings, I would definitely recommend.

SW_-_Empire_Strikes_Back.jpg

170px-Return_of_the_Jedi_%281997_re-rele

It's Star Wars, man. What is there to say?

A New Hope is, on rewatch, the weakest of the original trilogy I feel. It absolutely is still fun to go through, the charm is there and it has its moments but it just hasn't aged as well as the others. Some of the scenes are quite stilted in the way they're executed; like Leia's ice cold reaction to her home planet being blown to bits comes. But DUDE, it's Star Wars! despite the outdated choreography the duel between Obi Wan and Vader still holds up because you just end up caring for those characters. The final trench run is an iconic moment of cinema and the movie leaves you hungry for more, which leads me to.....

The Empire Strikes Back which in my humble opinion is the single best movie in the franchise. It's an upgrade in every way, one you notice from the minute that opening crawl ends. Production values, cinematography, writing...everyone's settled into their skin better and all the performances feel more genuine. The movie isn't afraid to walk the balance between light hearted fun and genuinely dark moments, Vader is an incredibly menacing villain with unmatched screen presence. With the mother of all cliff hangers and a twist of immense magnitude, it's an immortal journey as good now as it was then.

And to cap it all off is the most controversial of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi. I can see where the points of contention lay, mainly with the Ewoks and what have you but frankly I wasn't all that bothered by it. The stormtroopers being the Empire's best is kind of a running joke by this point [they can't aim for sh*t!] and the Ewoks had Han and the crew helping them out. Is it better than the second movie? no, but I personally like it more than the first and think aspects of its storytelling hold very well to this day. The relationship between Luke and Darth [or Anakin, as he is now called] is compounded on exponentially to form a fascinating look into the dynamics of the light and dark side of the force. The light prevails through our hero channeling the darkness in him while the bad guys are ultimately acting on the defensive, channeling the lighter side of the force. Some amazing use of lighting and the camera is present in the film, a surprising amount of visual storytelling can be found here and it all made for a truly stellar of climax

of redemption.

Angel_Heart.jpg

Quite the far cry from Star Wars but Angel Heart is a cult classic in its own right. Starring Mickey Rourke as a down on his luck private detective and Robert De Niro as a mysterious foreigner in search of a missing man; it's such an interesting blend of genres and style. It's film noir, it's neo noir, its gothic and dark and suspenseful and horrifying all at once. It's a balancing act between so many different blends its astounding how it pulls them all off. Great performances across the chart with Rourke in particular being a stand out; he's just perfect for the kind of gritty detective you need for this kind of story. He's charming and likable but sleazy all at once. My only real complaint is some stilted dialogue especially when our characters comes to contact with women of any kind, the infamous sex scene is overblown but otherwise it keeps you guessing till the very end.

It's reminiscent of Memento almost [anyone who's watched both will know what I mean] another favorite movie of mine. Check this one out.

At home - 2012. Forgot about that movie, I kept confusing it with the Day After Tomorrow. lol

Theaters - Fast and the Furious 8. That movie was pretty good, but damn, completely different from how the series started. Basically one drag race and it was at the beginning. lol

By god; Inside Llewyn Davis might not just be a perfect film; but the Coens very best. And that's no small feat.

I'm a big fan of Oscar Issac. He's proven versatility in roles like Two Faces of January, A Most Violent Year and blockbuster fares like Apocalypse and Star Wars but this is quintessential viewing as his performance of a struggling folk musician of the 60's is just utterly engrossing. So many different layers to dissect to a character played with incredible nuance.

Inside Llewyn Davis is a sort of black dramedy thriving in a constant sense of tonal melancholy all the way from its themes to its color palette, but it somehow manages to avoid tedium and being boring. It really hits close to home to anyone who's ever had artistic aspiration and tried to pursue said dreams; and the whole movie [at least in my opinion] functions as a metaphor for something even greater. It's funny and depressing and cruel and unusual and I just love it. All of it.

Mean_Streets_poster.jpg

Mean Streets is very unique among similarly themed Scorcese crime dramas in that it isn't particularly about anything. The stakes are just so low and almost nonexistent; it sort of eludes me why it ends up being so engaging. The film is shot in a documentary style; meandering as it follows a group of low level crooks and nobodies. The movie's central struggle is Charlie [played by Harvey Kietel] who attempts to balance his ambitions in his uncle's criminal enterprise with his need for forgiveness and redemption, personified in a slightly loony kid played by the ever excellent Robert DeNiro who Charlie tries to help out despite threatening all he aims to achieve. It's early Scorcese and its kind of fascinating seeing early landmarks of his work forming in this low budget flick; its uniqueness is both its strength and weakness as it can be quite easy to lose interest in certain bits but overall i'd definitely recommend it to Scorcese fans at least.

I was absolutely blown away by this movie. It's difficult to believe it's a true story.

Liked this movie a lot. Crazy story

One of the many things not shown in the movie was that Doss was one of three soldiers that volunteered to go up the ridge and hang the cargo nets.

Huh. I did not think i'd like this movie as much as I did; but this is possible my favorite cyberpunk movie since Ridley Scott's 1973 Blade Runner.

Enter dreary, 1999 Los Angeles. 2 days off of the New Year's eve, we follow Lenny Nero [Ralph Fiennes] a cop turned digital drug dealer who attempts to solve a brutal rape-murder case. Ralph was what got me to watch this movie personally; and he does not disappoint. He's perfect in this seedy night time city, the perfect combination of sleaze, opportunism, likability and a sense of goodness underneath a rough exterior that make him worth rooting for. Angela Bassett playing the role of Mace, an associate of Lenny's who serves as his foil in more ways than one. Both stars are quite exemplary and really carry the film forward with strong chemistry and juxtaposition; and the rest of the cast is rounded out with names like Vincent D'onfronio, Juliette Lewis and Tom Sizemore.

The film feels more relevant today than ever with underlying messages in regards to racial tension, police corruption, brutality and the question of where the rapid advance in technology is leading us. It almost satirizes our slinking deeper into cyber space with the movie's SQUID head piece; a plot device that allows people to ''playback'' recorded fragments of other people's lives. It wraps all of this in one slick, well paced, polished package that's just very engaging to watch from start to finish.

Will definitely be revisiting this one at some point; a new favorite.

I watched The Devils Own (1997). I've been curious to see it for years. It stars Brad Pitt as a IRA Commander that murders a bunch of British soldiers and RUC police in Belfast in retaliation for his fathers murder. He flees to New Jersey/New York to set up an arms deal and is housed by a cop (Harrison Ford). I enjoyed it because I enjoy films but it had many flaws. It's a little sentimental in the way that Hollywood/US Films can be. Brad Pitts character is an overly romanticized loveable Irish rogue fighting for freedom (but an actual murderer in reality) and Harrison Ford is the Irish-American or more like All-American do-gooder cop that wants simple solutions to complicated situations.

It's not really rated highly on RT or IMDB (although IMDB has a higher rate but they're always too generous over there).

Having said that the film does have positives. There's some decent 90's style action and a very good shootout at the start. However, it really romanticizes the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Devils_own_film.jpg

If you are interested in films that focus on The Troubles in Northern Ireland, I'd watch something like '71 or Hunger instead.

Hunger..(90% critics rating on RT)

'71, a very gripping film (96% critics rating on RT)

Unforgiven.jpg

The_outlaw_josey_wales.jpg

I'v actually watched Unforgiven several days ago but after watching The Outlaw Josey Wales yesterday; I thought it'd be fitting to talk about both of them.

Because they're both quite similar, in multiple ways. Both directed by and starring Clint Eastwood; the archetypal western hero who's surprisingly best at making subversive westerns that throw the conventions of the genre out of the window. Clint's known for oozing cool in roles like The Man With No Name from the Dollar's Trilogy and Dirty Harry from the Dirty Harry franchise; but in both Unforgiven and Josey Wales he puts on a far more vulnerable, humane performance. There is still a bit of that gunslinging badass in the latter but in Unforgiven Clint just goes all the way portraying his character, William Munny, a retired murderous, destructive outlaw in an empathetic light. The man is no badass cowboy, he's old and frail and trying his best to redeem his sins. It's dark, conflicting and honestly kind of scary. Incredibly well done.

Where is Unforgiven is a tale of revenge and redemption Josey Wales is wholly about the horror of war, set in a post Civil War society our character is incapable of letting go of the gun. It's a very compelling romp through the American frontier with a colorful cast of characters and interesting historical commentary.

Both are quintessential viewing for Clint Eastwood fans, and fans of Westerns in general.

Rubber-2010-film-poster.jpg

Rubber

A very unique horror where the killer in question is a rubber tyre. A lonely car tyre in the desert becomes sentient and goes on a killing spree, it's often quite surreal, bordering on the bizzare at times.

A unique premise which is quite intriguing and rolls along (pun intended) nicely keeping you interested. The storyline besides the tyres quest is far from clear cut, very random and odd scenes which require interpretation to make some sense of.

Overall worth a watch not just for the interesting premise but for the sense of wtf is going to happen next, I would recommend it.
