Thoughts On The Last Movie You've Seen

Please post more than just the title.

We don't need a War and Peace essay on the film, but at least give a couple of sentences of good and bad points and even throw in a rating if you want to, as long as you give some rationale.

Inherent Vice. I thought it was great - a fun, incoherent mess (intentionally). Joaquin Phoenix was great, but Josh Brolin was my favorite part of the movie.

Jupiter Ascending. Really disappointing... I like the concept and a lot of the elements they used in their story but the execution just didn't feel complete and the movie felt too short.

I was really excited to watch it too. Oh well...

Tracksuit Hitman

I watched the new Avengers movie last week with my girlfriend. It was f*cking top. I'm not usually a big fan of Marvel movies but I loved the first movie and I definitely loved this one. I've heard a lot of people say that the first was miles better than the second one but I really can't say I agree. They're both great in their own ways, one concentrating on the introduction of the new team (The Avengers) and one focusing more on the individual characters and the relationships between them (The Age of Ultron). Of course, that's not all that either of the two are about or focus on but they're the main differences IMHO.

In short, I loved it and I'd recommend it to anybody. I look forward to yet another Avengers sequel.

Limitless (2011)

Very missable. Bradley Cooper and (briefly) Robert De Niro. Instead of dealing with a hangover from alcohol, he was dealing with a hangover from drug use. Thats a 1.5 trick pony right there! No depth to the story, didnt particularly like any character, and it just didnt know when to end.

There was a bunch of Studio Ghibli films on recently, they do Jap anime films (some brilliant!), better known for Spirited Away (2001) and Arrietty (2010).

Tales of earthsea (2006)

Definitely one of the weaker ones, very little happened, it was all saved for the last 10 mins and it just wasnt worth it.

The taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009)

Denzel Washington and John Travolta (yeah, I was surprised he was still alive and working too!) f*cking awful film. Story was mediocre, acting was ok, but whoever the f*ck was in charge of editing it, basically took a steaming pile of sh*t on it -_-; Imagine you let a kid loose on a film on Final Cut or whatever, and it was the first time he saw any of the effects and transitions and he thought in his 6 year old mind that adding these effects every 4 minutes or so would be super awesome......... it really, really wasnt.

And there you go, my recent viewings! 3 films that if you havent seen, now you dont have to :)

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015);

I wasn't to sure about the movie at first, mainly due to the speculation around it. I gave it a go with my girlfriend and after finishing it I can safely say that I was pleasently surprised with it. It's a great movie with a great storyline. People misunderstand the movie, claiming that it's "just about sex" when that is not the case in any way. There's a maximum of five or six sexual scenes which last no longer than two minutes each and where hardly anything is shown, the scenes are mainly there to express the way that Anastasia reacts and handles the new experience with Grey.

Honestly, it's more about Anastasia's lust for Grey and what she was willing to do to make him hers. At first you think "oh this is bullsh*t" but the development in their relationship is truly heartwarming.

I'd go with a solid 7/10. Some parts were over exaggerated and did seem so straight away but it wasn't enough to put the whole movie below a positive score.

You do know it's literally based on a Twilight fan fic?

I commend you for putting up with that film for the sake of your missus, Geo. I commend you even more so for pretending to like it so your girlfriend won't feel bad about having made you watch it (I imagine she'll check this thread and smile when she reads your reply).

Last film I saw was Guardians of the Galaxy. Excellent film. I had the chance to see it in the cinema with two girls a while ago. I passed up the opportunity because I didn't want to ruin the experience for them (the presence of a sullen, joyless mathematician seldom makes any occasion better). Better to watch it at home with a pint anyway. Great soundtrack, pacing and direction, and the cast had great chemistry. Worth a watch.

22 Bullets.

It was a good movie. Pretty badass, but the opening scene was a bit sad, IMO.

Mister Pink

I watched Thor. Truly awful experience. Not only is Thor such a bland, 1 dimensional character they tried to make a feature film based around him as the lead character. I didn't feel anything empathy for anyone is this film. It seemed like a a lose plot strung together just to exercise some CGI wanking. There's constant music right the way through, you know that grand orchestral music that desperately tries to make things epic and tries to dictate to you how you should feel emotionally for each scene... But it never stops. The script was cheesy as hell and not even in a fun, ironic sense. It was just typical cheesy Hollywood style heroic babble made for kids. I'm trying to like super hero films but this crap reminds why I find it difficult. Waste of time except for some of the places looked nice. The film reminded me of some AAA titles out lately, maybe like Halo 4 for example... They look beautiful but there's not much going on in them.

I also watched Donnie Brasco. I haven't watched it in years and I enjoyed it more than ever. I'm a sucker for good Italian Mafia related films though. Their codes, there lingo, the banter, the politics and the sheer craziness of living that kind of life. They must be all screwed in the head and depressed as f*ck.

Anyway, if you don't know Donnie Brasco, it was the fake name Joe Pistone FBI man used to infiltrate the Italian Mafia in New York. The original job was going to last 6 months but it ran on 6 years. He even nearly got made. Some changes where made in the film, mainly the character Lefty had more traits of their boss played by Michael Madsen but it doesn't detract from what's going on here.

Lefty, played by Al Pacino brings Brasco in to their circle and takes him under his wing. Lefty has been in the game a long time as hasn't amounted to much. His character, although a murderous mob man is really humanised in the film. You can really empathise with him and feel sorry for him. Brasco is played by Depp and film shows the lengths one has to good to remain undercover especially the the things that would go against any normal citizens values or common sense. He nearly loses his wife a kids as he has to live and be the real deal in order to be convincing.

It's on Netflix UK & Ireland. I'd highly recommend you watch it. Some of it reminds me of GTA as they try set up business down in Miami in the early 80's. So even if you are a fan of watching films that have inspired GTA stories, I'd highly recommend it. Also the fact that it's based in a true story.

Yeah i was expecting something on the lines of Cloud Atlas, which kind of brought back my faith in the Wachowsky brothers, but the movie felt incomplete, i wonder if they will release a directors cut or something.

SURE ;)

Anyway i saw Taxi Driver (Jodie Foster thatmakesmemoist.jpg) Its good, like really good, apparently its also a cult film, which doesnt make any sense to me since it was a critical and financial success (i think), i also feel like the soundtrack was repeating itself way too much.

I also saw Still Allice.... Obvious spoiler; the movies ends around the time she stops being herself, but the acting is great (yeah even the Twilight girl gets the job done) and is very heartwarming.

Pink: Portman and Dennings made the Thor films watchable for me. In any case, try to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy. They're both far better than both Thor films.

I'm not a major fan of Thor but they're watchable and they are pretty entertaining. I prefer Thor in the Avengers rather than standalone just because he seems to have more of a character in the two Avengers movies. I don't know if that's the case for everyone else, but it certainly is for me. Although, like I said, Thor's still entertaining — no doubt about that.

I loved Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I watched that back in January on Netflix with my lady (she's a massive Marvel fan whereas I'm more DC). Captain America is probably one of my favourite Marvel characters alongside The Hulk (because The Hulk is f*cking beast) and a few others.

I've been trying to talk my girlfriend into watching the Batman movies to start her off because she's not seen many DC movies. She says that she started to watch a bit of Batman Begins once and found it boring which, to me, is a f*cked up thing to say! She's just into all of that 'straight into the action' type crap whereas I prefer a solid story, even if that means a slow start. I'll succeed eventually. It's just weird as hell; I was brought up on DC, not Marvel.

Yeah I love the Nolan trilogy. Maybe start her off with The Dark Knight? I did enjoy the Thor films but I get Pink's reservations. Loki was a great character who added a lot to the mix at least.

I like that film as well. I had never heard of that Comic Book series before, but I was pleasantly surprised. I saw it twice at the Cinema, something that I rarely do. :)

Which Thor film are you referring to, Pink? In my case I prefer the second Film better. I felt it had much better pacing. :)

I wish all Superhero films could be as thoughtful and smart as the Batman Trilogy.

@:Phill: Thor 2011. Pacing is one thing but Thor doesn't have much of a personality. :/
