DVNT
Often called the memory leak bug,.. If your GTA is suffering from massive lag, stuttering, looping sounds, or even a complete lock-up after a few mins of normal or smooth gameplay, like I was,....UPDATE YOUR MOTHERBOARD BIOS to the latest version. Its that simple. I did this yesterday and have since played GTA IV, 3 times over several hours with NO lag etc. Its an odd issue because you'll notice you can run other games without needing to update your Bios, but for GTA IV it seems crucial. Before then I tried everything else to fix this, including command lines, updating vid card drivers, even reinstalling the game, nothing worked. But updating my BIOS was my last resort. Its very easy, BUT be careful, READ your motherboard manual and do some research if you've never updated or 'flashed' your BIOS before. I have an Asus motherboard, and after doing some research, found that using the ASUS EZ Flash utility is a reliable method. It worked for me. If you have an Asus mobo, I'll run you through it: WARNING- do this at your own risk, READ YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUAL FIRST, for complete instructions on how to update your BIOS to make sure you get it right (your motherboard procedure may differ to mine). 1. Go to ASUS.com and under 'downloads' search for your motherboard latest Bios version. (Mine was 701) Save it to your hard drive (anywhere is fine). 2.****IMPORTANT**** You have to rename the file to what your manual says. In my case I renamed the file from: 701.ROM to: A8R32MVP.ROM This is the motherboard model. 3.Copy the renamed file to either a floppy, a CD or a flash drive and leave it in the machine. (I used a CD). 4.Restart computer, when it starts up: press ALT+F2. This will start the EZ Flash utility, a DOS based program. It then automatically looks for the CD Rom, and finds the file, then erases the old BIOS and programs in the new BIOS and then reboots the computer for you. That's it! I can finally play this game. genuf
Don't claim your victory. You may play the game but with dark interiors, missing lights, corrupted web pages, dark pool table, ugly ugly boom, all that stupid bugs that rockstar is unbeliavable unable to fix. Al that sh*t, only because you have a x1900xt as me. If you ask me, i can't play the game in that conditions, specially playing the storyline. cheers

At least I can run the game now. Edited February 10, 2009 by DVNT
burakka
I did flash my BIOS but after a while it hangs and eventually freezes again. It actualy lets me play for about an hour, then starts to freeze. If I restart game freezes in about 5 min, I don't know what is this? Rockstar needs to do something and needs to do it quick
DVNT
If your still having problems, its a good idea to post your motherboard brand and model here for Rockstar, they are aware of this thread.

Try to PM Rockstar Toronto here instead, you should get a reply. But your cpu is below min spec. So is mine (just) but it works in low -med set up. Also try these as well, -AMD dual core optimizer -my current command lines: -memrestrict 209715200 -novblank -availablevidmem 1.2 -percentvidmem 1.0 (note I haven't played around with these much since doing the bios, I figured since its working leave it for now. Make sure you use the commandline.txt in GTA folder for command lines, not the shortcut. Shortcut doesn't usually work. -I'm using the 9.1 catalist video drivers In my Bios I made sure 32bit data transfer was Enabled for my hard drive I only play offline Edited February 11, 2009 by DVNT
chngdman
Nice solution for some, but this only fixes your problem. This is because you had hardware that was not communicating properly and the timings were set to be more compatible with newer parts. The issue you faced with lockups was problems in your hardware, fortunately fixed now, but it is only going to apply to people who share your specifications. DVNT
Well when it comes to Bios, its not something most people play around with, so if nothing else works for this specific issue then its worth a shot. But its up to you guys. I've noticed Rockstar have this on their support page too : Here "If you are experiencing problems while running the game, you should check that all your hardware is running the latest firmware or BIOS available. We have witnessed a few issues including motherboards on an out of date BIOS causing severe performance problems, as well as graphics cards overheating and shutting down. Please visit the hardware manufacturer’s websites in order to update your firmware and bios to their latest revisions. You will typically notice the keystrokes needed to access your Motherboard’s BIOS during boot-up. Write down the number firmware version you see after doing this and make sure it is the most current version by visiting the vendor’s support website." burakka
I wanna be more specific. Just after flashing my bios to the latest version I played for almost 2 hours. After that I'm back to "NORMAL" 10-15 min of playing before hanging and then freezing. Also I can play a little longer right after starting the computer when it's still cold . I thought about changing the motherboard, but we must give credibility to those with better systems and the same problem. I was browsing through my bios options and my "32 bit data transfer" was already enabled. The question is now for those who may play well and Rockstar: what are the types of motherboards you use to be able to play? What systems did Rockstar test the game, exactly and specificaly? Make it public and next time think about releasing a demo version before releasing the full game. Edited February 11, 2009 by burakka
waldoribeiro
Well I only have shadow problems and texture problems but my motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4. I had memory leak issues until I bought a 9800GTX+ to replace my 8600GT. Then it stopped.
