hotcakes22
If Rockstar North is in Edinburgh, does that mean most of the game's makers are Scottish? Or is the team an all-around mix of British, American, etc. ? (not sure what forum this was supposed to go in)

I think not giving Rockstar North any credit for the PC version is going to far. Rockstar Toronto never made GTA 4. They only ported it to PC. Rockstar North designed the game. Wrote the story, then went and programmed the game and create all the art work etc. Rockstar Toronto just had to reprogram a game that had already been programmed, using all the art that had already been made, using the same story and the same design. If you meant the console version, why did you post in the PC Version section? Well, I see a "Gameplay" section but not a console version section. anyway, does anybody know the answer? i sort of assume it's just a large group of people, perhaps many of which are Scottish. JasonThummel
Rockstar North built the whole game. What do you find more interesting the menu text or the gameplay? I wish they were the ones to port it to PC, they seem to have quite high standards (from past experiences)
Stardog
I don't think Rockstar North make the whole game anymore. I remember reading that all the story/graphics are done in America, but Rockstar North do all the coding. They're based in my city - Edinburgh, in Leith, and they ignored my application to become a games tester for this piece of crap they released, even though I've been playing games since Dizzy the Egg. chngdman
It is my understanding that this is a family affair, the GTA series, and everyone has a hand in them. In this one, for sure. San Diego did the Rage engine, mostly, right? But how much was also contributed by the other companies? It's like, they may be located in different places, but the way they name their company always led me to believe it's all one company once it is branded Rockstar, they just have different geographical locations. There was a wealth of reference done by Rockstar NYC, as well as a wealth of the things you see on screen. I think Rockstar North lays out their roads and does some of the art, but a lot of the polished and final stuff goes through Rockstar North. Assuming, I am. Again, San Diego and Rage, and Toronto "ported" the code - but it's not so much as a straight port and not always a line-by-line translation or anything lol. Microsoft's pipeline I imagine made it complicated and introduced its own hurdles but in the end it was probably more easy for them. The technologies used to make games on the Xbox and Windows platforms are just funky like that, apparently. I wouldn't know because I only have bits and pieces of that stuff to go on. But Toronto ported this well, and I think Rockstar North is a bunch of people who have worked together for years and years which sort of sets them as a little bit different from the other headquarters, but some of the other headquarters were aquired companies that had already been assembled. Maybe all of them, I don't know, but I would assume North is all of that area, or if not there then of roughly the same area as each other, aside from probably a few they've added over the years. I think I read that each Rockstar location pulled together to complete GTA IV, especially when it went behind schedule. Gforce
R* North (Edinburgh) made the .... map, vehicles, peds, player models, props, model animations, cutscenes, Audio and visual FX etc .............. basically did ALL the modeling and textures and artwork for the game map. R* Toronto made the PC version of the game engine (from the floor up) you'd all know this if you chose to RTFM or did you ALL Pirate the game and haven't got a manual to tell you the true answers or are you all too lazy to read it and decided to guess the answer/s ? Edit: R* Toronto had a good go at coding a game engine but imho they made a complete balls up of it, give it back to the Jocks in future plz R* Edited February 9, 2009 by Gforce

chngdman
Ah, you make a good point Gforce. In that case, I just read my manual, and indeed, as I stated, every Rockstar location was in on this release with the exception of Leeds, since they are working on CT Wars. North, NYC, Toronto, New England, and Lincoln all had many hands in this game's credits. Thanks for pointing this out GForce, oh if we would just have RTFM. "or did you ALL Pirate the game and haven't got a manual" ... steam Yea, I have that version. The manuals are in the game folder. But they are well hidden, you see, they are in a folder curiously titled "Manuals".

chngdman
Actually, if we can get technical: The three games have a common folder with data that is the same between all three, and each had its own build. So it's more like 3 pictures were painted at the same time with the same palette. I'm not challenging you, I'm agreeing, but adding clarity to your point. And certainly they have been working on it since before the console versions launched.

So I'm not sure about 3 paintings? Lols, nice topic.
