Hi, im in the process of making a realistic damage, and speed realism mod for GTA IV. Here is what i have so far.

-- No more sliding like your on ice. If you turn a truck or SUV to hard or ebrake it to fast you WILL flip.

-- Speeds of all cars will be changed and also power. I have no idea why the muscle cars cant burn out when you floor it.

-- Realistic damage taken for cars. If you hit another car too fast its totaled. i will also be trying to take out where you take to much engine DMG and your car starts on fire. Or at least making that happen a lot less.

--IF POSSIBLE: Make locked or LSD diff for some car transmissions.

This video shows the first 3. Not quite how i wanted it but you can get an idea of how its going to be.

I installed that guys mod and it works in 20 just fine. buts it feels like your on ice and the cars burnout / drive way to unrealistic and fast. terrible mod. Bikes are just as bad.

Whatever floats your boat. I got used to it in like a day and after 2nd patch I felt like original R* handling is way worse.

...maybe I just like a bit of challenge in driving.

(Bikes are bad in both handling files.)

Your right, it has a SA feel to it. But on the other hand these two mods are really incomparable other then the fact there modding the same area. ill have a beta style test in a couple of days. Say Wednesday?

Wow that's great I've already a mod, like this, but only on my computer. I haven't released it... But I have 2.0 for every family car as damage multipler, 1.7 to 1.9 for trucks and buses (depends on how massive is the vehicle like bus: 1.7 steed: 1.9) and I put 1.5 for Stockades (since we know it's a moving safe). As for top speeds: all muscle cars have 180 velocity, new SUVs have an average velocity of 205 Km/h usual cars have an average of 225 km/h (pmp-600 has 260, feltzer: 250 etc.) while sports cars have 300 (except for porsche cuz we know it suck) Infernus is the fastest with 340 biggrin.gif

As for the acceleration, well I haven't changed since I can make the charger burn out when I want.

i started doing something like this so the cars would be good to control with G25. but i got angry on the serious glitches in 1.0.2 and postponed GTA IV actions till somebory fixes it so i could still use my G25. I ended with alpha 1 of the first paragraph of handling (basically all not uttercrap cars can skid if you floor it,full braking in non-ABS cars makes skidmarks and cars don't brake 200 meters from less than 200kph,also major increasement of max speed for all sportcars and all other cars get more varied max speeds).

Whoa I've just realized that even traffic off the speedometer only showed 184 Km/h in my Banhsee which I set the velocity to 300? Ahm any idea why? Anyway it feels like it was faster, and the sound of the car is changed as well. (it takes more time in a gear to switch to another)

What are you using to edit the handling.dat file?

that's a very interesting improvement!

looks like now it is much more harder to make the car slide! , which is more realistic. suspension settings plays in that physical behavior

Have you been thinking in adding a bit more of "mass/weight" to the cars? That's what i have felt missing.. I think the level of damage you did is a bit exaggerated , especially when you hit something at low speed, just turn that down a little or leave it at original state. And btw, you should definitely do something about the steering angle it should be increased on some cars, those lame Hummers / SUV has probably the worst handling ! Please do something with it, that'll be awesome.

overall, it's a great job.

can you explain what files you are tweaking ^pls, and how many variables are defining the car physics ? is it in one single file for all cars ?

have you ever played / tried LIVE FOR SPEED? (www.lfs.net) its an amazing car simulator with outstanding car physics, i suggest you try that out and be inspired from there ;o) im sure we can get something close in GTA4 car physics

I'm doing my own Vehicle realism mod too, collision I've got 1.5-1.7 Stockade 1.3, engine damage 0.3- 0.5 all vehicles (so my modded powerfull weapons Can't blow up cars) mass of vehicles is closer so cars dont fly off when hit by trucks. cars 1350-1900 / mpv 1950-2200 / 4x4 2400-2550 / vans 2700 / trucks busies etc: 3300-7000

I'm not sure on power & acceleration still playing, will post values when i sort them

still seeing what i can do with the grip, as its a Very important part, i want the handling Spot on Not.. easy! like alot on here rolleyes.gifwhatsthat.gif

The mass of the cars are extremely realistic, I think you shouldn't change that. Anyway is there a way to modify engine damage like shooting weapons won't blow a car up, but if you crash with 200 Km/h then your car would be totalled and a lot of smoke would come out of the engine.

@Corrosion905377: lol I'm using notepad ^^

Ive been playing LFS for a few years. i play online as "irunfromcops" also yes i know the damage at low speed is exaggerated at the moment its more of just testing. i worked on about 10 of the vehicles yesterday. Also I did mess around with the suspension on the Dukes and Futo. I think they bend way to easily and it looks like you take a corner at a 45* angle.

I havent thought about the weight much at the moment because it seems fine at the moment. if you could give me some ideas on how where to tweak it id be more then happy to do it.

I am modding the handling.dat only at the moment. Im going to be looking around and see if i can take a line of code out that makes mostly all the cars start on fire when they take to much DMG or make it happen alot less.

Can you make a damage only mod?

I like the normal handling the way it is.

Here you go sir.

Thanks man this is an awesome mod, i was just going to make something like this after messing with the damage multiplier. no more losing control at full speed and driving away from it!

Thanks. Ill have a newer version by next week. making the bikes better. and might try some crap to let the muscle cars be able to burn out. this mod isnt close to done.

Corrosion,

Haven't tested your beta yet, but from your descriptions and video you posted, this is exactly what I have been waiting for. While driving was fun for a while, the "archadeness" got old pretty fast. And the fact that you play LFS makes me even happier since you know what good physics are. I know there are obvious limitations with this engine, but all the parameters to tweak from the dat file makes me think your tweaks could be very cool.

I'm about 1/2 way through the game and was planning on returning when some "realism" mods show up and hopefully 1st-person on-foot (cockpit cam is already available). I might give this a whirl soon or wait until after the beta. Not sure yet.

Many thanks though man and keep up the good work icon14.gif

Thank you very much. Im also hoping for a first person mod. What ive been working on at the moment is making the bikes greatly more realistic. but for the bikes it seems im stuck at more realism = less fun. i changed some numbers so you cant turn much in the air. still being able to do a back flip or front. This lets you jump into the air and land your bike somewhat uneven. But now that i edited this. i jumped off the yellow airport ramps, and you fly off your bike. so i need further modding in that area. Once i define the vehicles im going to find a way to disable the "take to much DMG with the car and it blows up" All though i think this mod could be very good. its going to be complete crap if this doesnt get taken out.

Well I started back up and have been playing for the last two weeks and your vehicle tweaks are awesome. The vehicle handling actually should have at least been like this from the start. Very nice job.

- The more grip / less slide + understeer is much better.

- The damage, while at times is a bit much, is actually awesome. Much more realistic now. The only minor issue is that the body too often clamps down on the tires, but that is beyond tweaking I'm sure.

For the hell of it, I should disable your mod one night and see how different default GTA was.

Hopefully you continue working on it. I would be interested in your motorcycle tweaks as well.

If you want any suggestions (keep in mind I'm a realism freak, lol), I would say make the vehicles harder to drive and more sluggish like LFS for example. I have NO idea if this is really possible in this engine, but maybe the vehicles need more weight for that heavy momentum feel and even more grip+understeer. For quick tight turns, you would need to use the handbrake. Right now, I almost never use it because the cars are still very agile.

Anyways, again good job.

Hey Corrosion,

One other thing. I'm using the first beta you released, but I saw you updated your first post on May 3rd. Did you ever release a later version then your first? I'm wondering if I'm using an old version.

Thanks,
