ron123
First, to all the noobs I should say that I am not like you, so don't advice me about something that you don't know. Now, I have been searching for a new GPU to upgrade my old one, the 9800GT with 512 VRAM memory. I looked in the market of prices per performance and I wanted to kick N'vidia's lazy a*s more then once. I have problems to buy a new GPU, here is a few of them: I am living in the peaceful boring nation of Israel, in Israel everything cost 30%-40% more then in the US, examples of the lowest GPUs prices: 295GTX = 675$ 4870x2 = 615$ 285GTX = 492$ 280GTX = 490$ 260GTX 216sp = 366$ 4870 1GB = 325$ 4870 512MB = 288$ 9800GTX 1GB = 247$ 4850 512MB = 187$ 9800GT 512MB = 152$ Note: this is cheapest prices of the basic editions in Israel. So this is really hard to upgrade in Israel, I can afford to spend 250$-300$ for this upgrade. My problem is that I want to buy a real upgrade for my rig. Now, I just want to mention that I really hate Nvidia for not creating GPUs for the middle-end gamers, some GPUs between 9800GTX to 280GTX for normal prices. Nvidia just want to rename and not upgrade those GPUs, because they want to sell their 9800gt-9800GTX cards, which is just a sh*t modern upgrade for an avarage gamer. I really like the ATI's HD4850 512MB, it is a good card for price, but it is not a real upgrade for me, I really want to have the strength of the 260GTX but it is to expensive, on the other hand the 1GB GDDR5 of the HD4870 is a damn good memory but the HD4870 is to weak relative to its price. Any suggestions? I thought to wait to thw 2Q's new cards which will drop the prices in 30%-40%, but I know that at 2010 (maybe 2009's end) we will have the new generation GPUs + the new Larrabee Intel's GPU that may kick the market. In israel everything is expensive except artillery shells (just joking). This what happend to me when I saw the prices-
Quemical
That's why i dropped nvidia, overpricing the crap out their cards. ATI put an end to that when they came out with the 4850 and 4870 and made them drop their prices real fast. For the moment, i am sticking with ATI. nVidia just overclocks their stupid cards and charge and extra $100. ATI actually did something new and came out with DDR5 and sold it for a reasonable price right off the bat.

Boris_Chavez
Are there any legal/tax restrictions preventing you from simply ordering a card from a supplier in a country where things are cheaper? But you may have to go some distance to get a major performance jump on your budget.
Picolini
Are there any legal/tax restrictions preventing you from simply ordering a card from a supplier in a country where things are cheaper? But you may have to go some distance to get a major performance jump on your budget. That's what I was going to suggest. If you can find some site that ships worldwide, just go with that. However, those prices aren't much more than they are over here, about $50. So taxes and shipping might add up to take away any savings. That's why i dropped nvidia, overpricing the crap out their cards. ATI put an end to that when they came out with the 4850 and 4870 and made them drop their prices real fast. Don't know where the 9800GTX+ prices were before the HD 4850 was out, but it's pretty much on par with it price and performance wise. @ron123, I'm assuming you want a better graphics card to increase your FPS in GTA IV, right? Don't waste your money. The 9800GT should be just fine to run the game. I have an HD4850 and I get ~30 average I'd say. The thing holding me back is my dual core. I don't see why you're only getting 27 (or is that 37 in your video). It would probably have to do with the high resolution, maybe lower it to 1680x1050. Read up on how GTA IV scales reflections and shadows with resolution and you'll see that you're killing performance a lot with such a high resolution. There's a work around which involves changing the settings to a lower res, then adding a code line to the shortcut to force the game to run at what ever res you want. This way it looks smooth, but keeps a lower res for the shadows and reflections which are NOT noticeable in anyway (seeing as how the shadows suck in the first place and reflections aren't viewed close up enough and they change to quickly to tell). anus
Like Picolini said, just keep your 9800GT. The performance you gain from upgrading to a 4850 is NOT worth $187. Save up your money and get an upgrade that's actually worthy . BTW, I'd KILL to get 27FPS at those settings.

It is an old sig, before the second patch and before OC my CPU to 3.0GHZ, and OC the GPU to 648/1605/1070, I can have real 27-35FPS on max settings. I don't want a GPU just for GTAIV, and I am not a noob (Picolini), I wrote the biggest performance guide in this furoms. I can play on max settings, but I have to use the commandline for getting extra memory that killing my FPS or to tweak the game and loss quality. This HD4870 1GB (open box),looks good just for 191$ -link I sorry that I can't buy it for this price in my country
Picolini
You don't seem to be taking any suggestions and keep claiming you're not a noob. If you're such a professional on the subject, then I think you can find such a simple answer yourself. The only problem here seems to be you can't afford a better card, otherwise you'd just buy it. And what is this so-called "biggest performance guide" on the forums? I don't see yours pinned in the GTA IV PC section anywhere...
