Exitiumx
In all the Grand theft Autos, I don't remember any weapon being able to Pierce something. Wood, thin metal sheets and hell, even windows can block bullets from going outside. Somethings are ridiculous, take GTA IV for example. If you're online and say, you're shooting someone with the miniguns off the helicopter and they're behind certain structures which are pretty thing, they don't hit them at all. I know GTA is comical but they have to add some of this realism into it. I don't really have much to say about it though, I just think that the next GTA should have objects that bullets can go through and hit the other person. Agree or disagree. Tell me what you think the advantages and/or disadvantages will be.
Mainland Marauder
This is kind of like destructable objects and environments, except a little harder to do. You basically would have every texture in the game environment reacting to events in the game (gunshots, explosions, cars crashing into things etc.) and that is asking a lot out of the hardware when you consider the immensity of a GTA world. Then suppose you take a shotgun and fire it at a wall, leaving a bunch of holes in it - if you go across town and come back, will that still be on the wall? This sounds like stuff that could happen in the future, but maybe not on PS3, 360 or current PCs. I could be wrong, but I'm figuring in some of these other "next level" ideas like all buildings having interiors, then having those interiors where they don't have to be loaded separately from the normal game world...it's OK to be a dreamer, but just putting some perspective on things. Just four years ago we were amazed at the depth and scope of San Andreas and we're talking about stuff that's a quantum leap from that Games have had rather simplistic 2D textures on the walls where you shoot since the heyday of FPS in the 90s, and it was a nice touch for its time, but I figure the bar is raised as we're moving into another decade here and we're going for something that could pass as real in a movie if not real life. I'm thinking of actually being able to carve up and cut down a wooden fence with a chainsaw or do a flyover like "Phnom Penh '86" in Vice City except where you could take that M60 or maybe a rocket launcher and actually cave in that whole building in on the people inside if you wanted to. That would be badass. You've been able to bust windows out before. Remember "Shakedown" in VC? That was fun. There was that one building in Portland in GTA3 where you'd drive your car through the glass to get the hidden packages. In San Andreas there was the part of the bridge over Grove Street that Tenpenny drives through with a firetruck and plunges to his eventual death. I want to see more of that stuff as well, but where it could be done anywhere and not in just one "soft" area. Anyway, I guess you could say I'm in favor of this sort of thing. Ultraussie
We could have bullets go through it only, but the actual holes seems alittle far-fectched for today's hardware.
QwertyAAA
AFAIK, the illusion of bullets hitting is created by small normal map overlays? But the bullet holes are impossible to implement at the moment.
Sanjeem
mabey in the future consoles and pc's but it does sound sweet!
racerxr2
Bullet holes aren't impossible. Take COD4 for example you can go to the other side of the map then walk back and they are still there.
Mainland Marauder
AFAIK, the illusion of bullets hitting is created by small normal map overlays? Strictly from a layperson regarding texture mapping, coding and the like - I think you're right. Another thing I'd like to see is not just bullets going through objects but through people - every round disappears once it hits somebody. There could be exit wounds going out and hitting other enemies in a group, or possibly a ricochet hitting somebody, possibly even an ally or yourself.
