Svip
Some places live solely on tourism, and that's what they're trying to achieve. And if you ask me, they'll be really successful at it. Flaw in that reasoning: ... Must rely on tourism when oil runs out... ... Tourism relies on oil to move people around the world (jet fuel and such)... Heh. They should invest in some good cameras to take lots of pictures to show people what they look like. So when the world runs out of oil, no one will move anymore? MY GOD! @smaisey: Read a short article about Dubai, the only reason it became so popular, was because they f*cking discovered oil there. You said it yourself, 80% of the income is tourism. What's the rest? Groceries?! From the Wikipedia article: Oil was discovered in Dubai [in 1966], after which the town granted concessions to international oil companies. The discovery of oil led to a massive influx of foreign workers, mainly Indians and Pakistanis. As a result, the population of the city from 1968 to 1975 grew by over 300%, by some estimates. But I'll give you one thing. I remember when there was a guy on The Daily Show talking about his book, The World Without Us, which described the events that would occur if humanity vanished one day. And I can only imagine Dubai being the first perfect real life example of this. Because when the economy really tears it apart, it will, without doubt, just be left alone, and then we can watch nature set in! Otter
And I can only imagine Dubai being the first perfect real life example of this. Aside from Pripyat and Chernobyl, natch. And I'm sure there was a city somewhere in South America built to be a sort of architectural Utopia that was all but abandoned. I wish I could remember what it was called. D- Ice
Here is the Tallest building lineup by 2010. http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?28069335 Little Translation on the Arabic for anyone interested. "Nakheel" means "Palm Trees". Why the f*ck was there no palm trees on the scale to see how awsomely they beaten nature. "Abraj Al Bait" means "Towers of the House". "The House" refering to the "House of God" - in Islam being the Kaaba - which Muslims believe does not actually house God, but is called the House of God. Maybe he moved out or something, I dunno... Just wondering, where will those towers supposedly be - like on top of the Kaaba or just near it in Mecca?
manofpeace
Here is the Tallest building lineup by 2010. http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?28069335 The Square Capital Tower looks f*cking awesome. This is all making want to take a little tour of the Middle East so I can see these things in person, all the while contributing to the market for more buildings. Jim
We're supposed to have a skyscraper, that will become the tallest in North America when built, right here in Chicago. The Chicago Spire, which has been postponed recently because of the poor economy at the moment, and there is no set date which construction will continue. Although, it won't really compete with the Nakheel Tower in terms of height. @MarcoTheftAuto: From the perspective of that image, the tower kind of looks like a rocket, which I think is terrible for a design. Hopefully it looks more like the image that is on the Wiki page for the tower. @Nikofan112: Now that is an awesome idea for a skyscraper design.
