Kryten42
This ATI stuff is bullsh**. I have had(and sometimes it still happens) mostly the same problems, only more often. I dont have an ATI card, nor was the last one from ATI. With lots of testing/tuning/tweaking I found settings where the game runs mostly stable, but sometimes I still have those lockups/freezes(every few days) and sometimes(especially MP cops&crooks spectator mode after death) the camera turns lag the game to death. Its just the game, or maybe the two patches which didnt work as intended.
Dingdongs
Its just the game, or maybe the two patches which didnt work as intended. Exactly. Do not patch the game, just uninstall and reinstall and play the basic version. Worked fine for me and everyone else I spoke to.
jonbrown
I started this thread and my advice to people having problems with the second patch is to tinker with the graphics settings that were changed/introduced with update 2. Check out the v-sync settings especially. Try turning vsync or on and off. It might help to have the in-game settings match the settings of your catylist or nvidia control panels. Vista and Xp might differ, though. For example, Nvidia documentation says that v-sync should be forced on or off in the control panel and vista should be controled in-game. What has worked for me (for the last couple days through several hours of play) is that I forced off vsync in nvidia contol panel and turned it off the game. Concerning the patch(s) They can be a huge pain but I find that my older computer can now play GTA 4 in a half decent manner. davetheshrew
ive been looking around all decent forums about these CTD and even in some cases peoples monitors turning off forcing a reboot. I have also been having issues with FC2 and unreal 3 to name but a few. I reckon its on board sound that is causing hella trouble for a lot of people. I have a realtek onboard with my asus p5q pro but my brothers IDENTICAL system has an x-fi card in it. His comp NEVER CTD/ turns off monitor, but mine does. soooo.. i put his card in mine and wahlaa, no probs at all Should we all be out buying x-fi cards? That would probably be the first time that using a Creative card on Vista actually helped with stability. I guess I should update my realtek drivers and see if that helps. Zinthar
For those having the CTD issue with 4800 series cards and Catalyst 9.1 drivers where you get the atiumdag.dll error, there's a fix in this thread: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?act=Pos...&f=233&t=396938
jonbrown
So far no crashes after 2 sessions about 4 hours total playtime. I have winxp. what I did was go to nvidia control panel (manage 3d settings) and change vsync to force off and turned it off in the game as well. Since I did that, no crashes. if i crash again, I'll post again. I think something like this could be done with vista and/or ati systems. Note: Steam version users might need to find GTA 4.exe in the SteamApps/common/gta4 folder because it might not appear in list of programs installed. [edit] No crashes after 3 more hours. I think the vsync enabled by default with the patch 2 had a detrimental effect on my system. I don't think I'm out of the woods yet so I'll post here again if I crash. absolutely NO MORE crashes since I changed my vsync settings.

JohnZS
I get stutter with Clip Capture turned on with Patch 2 (it used to CTD, so at least they fixed that...well almost). Crash to Desktop if I run the Benchmark during game play, ie load the game, play for a bit then run the benchmark causes a CTD with "GTA IV stopped working" message. Unknown Terror
I don't experience any CTD's but now and again the game freezes during "Loading" screens, the word still flashes as if there some hope it will actually load but it doesn't. Plus I can't even seem to run the benchmark anymore it also just says "Loading" and never actually loads. Other than that the game is actually fine and runs pretty well on all the highest settings. My specs are in my sig if it helps at all.
drendar
I wonder if the issues I'm experiencing are the same as you guys... I can play the game for 30 seconds, 2 minutes, an hour or more, but then suddenly BANG - Framerate drops to 0, CPU (Boths Cores) jump to 100% and stay there. Game doesn't crash or hang - just goes REALLY slow (<1FPS) and hammers CPU. I am able to Alt-Tab back to the desktop (takes a while, mind) and check all my stats, No components even close overheating, but CPU getting hammered by GTAIV.exe, even when task switched back to the desktop, and with GTA in the escape menu. This system I've literally just installed clean the other day on a brand new SSD Drive. XPSP3 (Slipstreamed install), Avast Antivirus, All latest drivers, Windows Updates, Firefox, 7Zip, couple of other little apps, then Steam installed, downloaded GTAIV, allowed all the updates to go on. I get a lovely 20-40FPS @ 1680*1050 (which on my system is pretty damn good) then it goes crazy on the CPU after a random length of time. CPU: AMD 4600+ X2 (2.4GHz) GFX: XFX 8800GTS (320MiB) Mobo: Asrock (NForce 630a) Mem: 2GiB DDR400 @ 2-3-3-6 HDD: 120GiB Corsair SSD (160MB/s - W00t!) Tried lots of different combinations of GFX settings, not noticed a pattern yet. System isn't overclocked at all, however before the rebuild the GPU, Memory and CPU were all overclocked quite healthily, but GTA hardly ever crashed, I just used to only get 15-20FPS. (Was only running patch1 then though) I'll leave two instance of Prime95 running overnight just to check but I'm certain this is not a hardware fault or overheating issue. Is this the same as some of you are getting or is it completely different? Cheers, Nick
edd080
Hi to all this is the reply i got from the support site ; 'download the driver management software RivaTuner http://downloads.guru3d.com/RivaTuner-v2.2...wnload-163.html install and run it. On the 'Main' tab, there will be a section titled 'Driver Settings' with ForceWare detected displayed below that. Click the build button to the right of it to open a menu with 5 icons. From this set of icon, choose "Reset all driver settings to their default values'. Do not modify any other settings using RivaTuner. Now launch the game. As you are using an AMD processor also install the optimiser http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_ty...s/DCO_1.1.4.zip ' I don't know why I should use rivatuner if I have never tweaked my card, it is usually overclcocked by default from the factory. When I asked the support site again he simply told me that overclocking could cause instability issues !!!
