that computer wont be invented for another 2 years.

Thats the problem isnt it?

Who here will actually be willing to play GTA IV in 2 years time, im sure we will all be playing something far better on our "next-gen" PC's.

Just us modders. Hopefully all the nubs and whiners will be gone and moved on elsewhere by then, leaving us in peace to get on with it.

THat's not true, just wait one year to the intel's larrabee GPU, that with any quad will be able to run GTAIV perfectly.

the top of the line i7 can barely play this game above 30fps. how is the next cpu which are i5 gonna do any better?

and unless theres something im missing the intel gpu is for basic 3d they arent going against ati and amd in the performance segment. this is an onboard chip made to go against the geforce8200's and the ati 780/90g

there are some damn rich f*ckers in here

Some of us actually have jobs that require real blood and sweat. wink.gif

What do you do for a living, Pinky? biggrin.gif , just curious mate, not being intrusive.

Bare in mind, GTA IV is extremely memory and CPU dependant, I recommend 3-4 GB of RAM and a 3.0 GHZ Quad core,

it seems (and should be highly) unnecessary for any game, however, GTA IV isn#t that well coded, hence it's high requirements.

Finally, a powerful GPU with a plentiful amount of VRAM (thank flip I got the 896 Overclocked version) is important.

Overclocking can wield surprising results, grab and aftermarket cooler and give it a go.

pinky: I'll still be playing IV, probably.

pretty crazy i know all 4gb mercie_blink.gif

gonna get some memory asap

It seems to me to be Vista Superfetch working, "empty RAM is wasted RAM". wink.gif

Wow had a pretty bad day since getting my extra 4gb

placed in and reset bios to reconfigure, then powered on and bios completely gone and no way of fixing it, tried many methods sad.gif

so, i had a spare motherboard, my old evga 680i thank goodness, althou it is the ar revision and will not overclock my quad past 2.7 sad.gif but atleast i'm back up and running again with all 8gb colgate.gif

so that was the culprit eating all my memory Vista Superfetch, what a piece of crap that is, i knew something was not right but wow, even with my 8gb installed it was chomping virtually all of it up leaving like 400mb free, hell if i know what it was cacheing, thank goodness i seen that post, now i have proper control over my precious memory and when ever i reinstall vista that is an extra tweak i will be sure to do.

so glad it was mentioned in the thread thank you biggrin.gif

Is this where you've been hiding pinky??

And you're right, the modders will be around the longest. Just like with SA.

I can't understand why this thread is around. Obviously the best components available will okay GTA the best.

Highest clock possible on the fastest i7, the most DDR3 triple channel RAM you can get on a mobo, quickest HDD and DVD drive, and tri-SLI GTX 295s, probably best on XP, maybe W7 or Vista, but I doubt it. End of thread.

Its not necessary, or worthy, to use multiple GPUs while trying to get the best from GTA 4, since game requires basically CPU power (a quad at 3+Ghz can provide it) and VRAM (this will bottleneck any rig with the 1 Gb limit of the high end cards available now). colgate.gif

was not happy with only being able to clock my q6600 at 2.7 with stability issues evga 680i sli ar revision absolutely crap for quad core and the a1 revision i had 3 doa boards which is what made me switch to intel p35 chipset, i'll never bother with an nforce board again and hdd's going faulty on nforce 680i so i ordered a Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48, can't wait to get it set up tomorrow, hopefully no more problems, so no more upgrades for me this year gonna stick with this rig for atleast a whole year biggrin.gif

so i will not be getting any i7 core this year as was going to jump over to it come autumn biggrin.gif oh well

i'll see if i get over 60fps at 1920x1200 with it being pcix2.0 which i hope helps over the p35 chipset, i'll post a pic or 2

here is my task manager stats at this moment since disabling superfetch, if only superfetch was controllable, but it just hogs pretty much all resources so it had to go the os does not show a highly noticable difference, definately a bit of difference thou

total memory 8189mb

cached 1159mb

free 6063mb

nice smile.gif can't wait to get my rig sorted and see what it can do now

edit, but if only i knew of disabling superfetch before buying the extra memory, doh ah well all my other games should benefit now

You wouldn't really be able to save money from getting an old desktop and replacing the parts unless you get a pretty new PC for a REALLY REALLY good price. Otherwise, it's best and cheapest to put together a system froms scratch.

For $603.94, you can get this system:

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L

Core 2 Quad Q9400

GSkill 4GB (2X2GB) DDR2 800 PC6400

MSI HD4830 512MB

Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Cache SATAII

Cooler Master eXtreme Power 600W

This system should be able to play IV and all other games fine, even without overclocking, but you have a lot of overclocking room with this system, so if you ever want some free massive boosts of performance, you can easily do it wink.gif.

Oh and this system will last you for a long time, 4 years would be possible. Just as long as you don't expect to max out every possible game in the future, this system will last you.

I just want to add to this. Right now you can get the 1gb HD3850 for cheaper than that 4830. Are 50 faster than 30 (like how 7900 is faster than 8500 nvidia?)

It eats up and spits out GTA IV (I have 512 MB AGP version and have no problems - with 1GB, high tex will be a breeze and it also supports the max res whenever ur monitor needs an upgrade icon14.gif )

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102793

Not cheaper by much, but it is when you consider it's double the ram for stellar GTA IV performance.

helium ftw, get that money. nice article too, ty, and intel ftw. ^^

lol, I have been with helium for like 3-4 years. $9 total. that place actually is a rip off.

Not near worth the effort. but it makes a great debate. When you see you hit #1.

Heck I make that much in a day on my tech news site.

Yea, I heard they are best for building links or pushing landing pages with articles. Have you tried Associated Content? they are pretty decent with upfront payments. But, you and I, we're beyond that beginner stuff anyway if you've already got 10+ dollar days on a site you run yourself. Good work. Ever mess with CPA stuff? Send me a pm to continue this... CPA I can pull 100s a day if I work a few hours icon14.gif

As for on topic, found a nice Gigabyte board as an alternative to the one above. Half the price, supports what we'd need it to, I'm about to order it myself (as long as HD3850 1gb is not PCIe2.0 and just PCIe16x, I hope so, otherwise I won't be able to get this sweet deal):

Nope, the 4830 is much better than the 3850. Absolutely no competition between the two. The 3850 is comparable to something like the 4670.

ObsessedWithGTA4
GTA IV, technically, runs to the best of it's ability on any system that meets the requirements. With the proper settings for the resolution you are playing, and the proper resolution for your hardware.

Now, you want to play max? You can't afford it. Maybe you can, you could be rich as f*ck. So, if you are, your first start is one of these monitors:

http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&rls=o...F-8&sa=N&tab=wf

Next, you need a good AMD quad (intel quads have bugs, you need to apply a patch and you lose 10 percent - and I prefer intel and have yet to ever buy an AMD - so that says a lot that I am saying that, I suppose. If this is already fully fixed, by all means, I support Q6600)

An i7 will not outperform a quad in GTA IV, it will be barely noticeable difference. Maybe in the future when there are updates to the way the processor handles its work, but for now, it's not quite the stellar jump as going from a C2Duo to a Quad. Let some i7 users come in, they'll tell you (I saw one man post about worst gameplay with an i7 after have an e8xxx Core2Duo!!!!! nervous.gif )

Video card? ANY GFX card made in the past 2 years with a gig of ram will eat IV and sh*t it out over and over - my 512MB card is only used 38% on medium textures and high everything else and 1680x1050, an HD3850, and on high tex it even works with no slowdown except a breif pause once in each long travel (unless my system ram is at half speed, which I must do for stability, system wide [not just for GTA], so I am stuck at Medium - no biggie, really not missing much, and static shadows look better and not so sharp in medium anyway).

But you should wait because in 2 years, when VC is coming out, those monitors will be a mere 200 dollars, refurbished, and like 300 new.

"Next, you need a good AMD quad (intel quads have bugs, you need to apply a patch and you lose 10 percent"

"An i7 will not outperform a quad in GTA IV"

Dude you are the biggest f*cking idiot. My blood is boiling because of your stupidity!

It depends on the clocks, a quad at 3.67 Ghz i.e. will be outperformed only by a highly oc i7 920 i.e. , according to the benchies and threads ive read in the forum.

superfetch is way out of control in my opinion, ms should have let the user specify how much mem it is allowed to use for it, instead i'm just gonna turn it off completely, i have no idea what it is cacheing using all 8GB it is a joke.

how to disable superfetch

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/

also found a tut on how to get rid of the green progress bar when a folder with many media files in, i can't find the link but i did copy and paste the article and saved it to a file, i'll juste paste it here for anyone else who wants this tweak, it makes browsing through my video folder just as responsive as xp were.

Every time I open a folder in Vista it just has to scan it for some reason. And this annoying green bar scrolls across Windows Explorer. Mean while, my CPU and hard drive is going crazy. Sure, you could click on the little X every single time… but who wants to do that.

Below is how to disable ‘Automatic Folder Type Discovery’

The first step is to clear out all your existing views, they are dirty, dirty views.

Navigate to: “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell”

Delete key: “BagMRU”

Delete key: “Bags”

Next, let’s recreate those keys.

Recreate key: “BagMRU”

Recreate key: “Bags”

Now, we are going to create a new key so Vista will ignore automatic folder type discovery.

Navigate to: “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags”

Create key: “AllFolders”

Navigate to: “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders”

Create key: “Shell”

Navigate to: “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell”

Create string value: Name: “FolderType” Value: “NotSpecified”

and here with the tweaks to vista including no superfetch and no indexing, overall it is hardly noticable other than having all the resources i paid for.

lol maybe your right, even after overclocking back to 3.6ghz, what a waste of money getting the extra 4gb and then needing to get a new motherboard, it even seems worse so i've had more than enough of this games wonky behaviour, bring on Mafia II, hopefully it will not be for a system of the future sarcasm.gif .

i'm still gonna play multiplayer thou but on lower settings, i'm sick to death of trying to tweak it, finding a good setting and then something screws up and i have to tweak again, with my current settings it looks better than xbox 360 version and runs ultra smooth 100% of the time, i'm running it without any tweaks now and at 1680x1050 medium textures, 20 distance, 40 view distance and high for the extra settings.

i should be able to run it well with high textures and at my monitors native res of 1920x1200 but it always gets to a point in the game where it crashes to deskyop saying out of video memory with or without the memory command, reboot your system. angry.gif

definately not my gpu or system as anything else runs perfect without tweaks and the chances of me wanting to play this in a year or 2 when better hardware is available are possibly none, unless the episodic content makes it over to pc in the future sometime, but really if all pc games was as bad as this from release date to a couple months later i would just switch to consoles for gaming.

seems to me r* really could do with making a 64bit exe for this game so it can actually use more memory, then maybe it would work ok on max settings and a couple of tweaks.

i just don't get it thou as i had it running 100% settings at 1680x1050 with motion blur and it ran fairly smooth and good on my last mb gigabyte p35-dq6 with 4gb which was not pcix 2.0

ahhh i've had my rant hehehe biggrin.gif

edit and i will never buy a dual graphics card ever again

Why don't you try disabling the Windows paging file and seeing if your system runs better without it since you have all that extra memory.

Why don't you try disabling the Windows paging file and seeing if your system runs better without it since you have all that extra memory.

hmmm that is the 1 thing i have not tried yet, sounds worth a try, i'll update if it helps

got my q6600 back up to 3.6ghz and going off the temps there should be more room for a higher clock, 26c to 32c on cores at idle.

update, pretty much the same as before other than not having to wait once vista has booted, but have settled for just using the settings in the game to have 1920x1200 with high textures and tweaked all the other settings for a good solid frame rate with prettly good looks, but not like the maximum tweak, i am definately through thou with any more unofficial tweaks unless someone comes up with a way for the game to address more system memory properly like a proper 64bit exe, guess i won't be enjoying the single player part of the game in all its glory until future hardware is available, already completed it anyway, which means i'm gonna forget about the single player part and just play it on multiplayer until then. confused.gif

the main reason i think for it carry on saying out of video memory i think is my 4870x2 is ddr5 running at 3600mhz and my laggy ddr2 is running at 1000mhz so it has big issues with the difference so it makes it flop, seems a good enough explanation to me.

the multiplayer part has saved this game for me as even with lower settings i have heaps of fun on it biggrin.gif

Based on today's specs (Intel's Core i7, AMD's Phenom II for starters) what is the best computer can build to play GTA:IV to its best ability?

Um I thought it was the future sad.gif

Here are my present specs IMO:

Processor: Intel Core i7, OC'd to 3.5Ghz

RAM: 8GB

GFX Card: nVidia GTX 295 - OC'd

Future tounge.gif:

Processor: Intel Extreme Core i7 OC'd to 5Ghz (5Ghz x 10 tounge.gif)

RAM: 20GB

GFX Card: nVidia GTXXX 3000 - 9GB OC'd or ATi HD10000 - 9GB OC'd.
