Build a computer to play GTA:IV at best ability

The HD4870X2 BEATS the GTX285 in any game, including GTA IV.

If you say that a GTX285 can beat a HD4870X2, post some proof such as benchmarks.

And there is no microstuttering with the HD4870X2. The 4870X2 uses supertiling and so microstuttering CANNOT happen. It's impossible. So, it's an nVidia only problem. If you still say that there is microstuttering with games, post some proof.

@Maraca, Laptops are very limited in upgrade options. There's no way a laptop such as your's will run IV decently. Better off selling it and adding the cash to your desktop PC budget.

No m8, you post a benchie proving a 4870x2 can beat my GTX 280 : sly.gif

Bout microstuttering, you should search more before posting m8. Whats your rig config btw ? wink.gif

@ Thales:

Sometimes when I do a benchmark I get similar results of yours.. I'll try overclocking my CPU to 4GHz then we'll have some serious competition cool.gif

Absolutely colgate.gif , but i wonder if you have some micro stuttering playing GTA 4 or any other issues such as RESC10, pop textures, occasional lag or any crash ?

Not at all. I use the -memrestrict command and I use cacheboost so I experience no memory leaks (stuttering, awful pop ups)/out of video memory problems. And the game runs at like 25 FPS during heavy rain at night + 6 stars wanted level wink.gif

Dude, Thales, the 4870X2 is CONFIRMED to not have ANY microstuttering. None at all. Like I said before, ATI uses a different way to render frames on their Crossfire setups. Proof? Here you go wink.gif.

And Aidan here is living proof of that tounge.gif.

Oh and the 4870X2 does indeed beat the 280, I'm sure of it. But I can't find any benchmarks of a rig similar to yours sadly. So hopefully Aidan posts a benchmark of his. Can you Aidan tounge.gif?

Its a GTX 280 ownage till now, it rapes the 4870x2, with my 58.96 FPS - against your poor words, a fact. biggrin.gif

Here is a benchmark:

I'll overclock my quad tonight and I'll post another benchmark wink.gif

Edit: I'm using "-availablevidmem 1.6" command so that I could use 100% draw distance. GTA IV reads 1GB only from the 4870x2

Oooh, this is getting interesting biggrin.gif. Looking forward to your benchies man smile.gif.

Oh and I just saw that Thales asked for my specs, sorry man. Wasn't ignoring you or anything, I just seemed to have missed it.

I get ~25FPS with everything except view and detail distance maxed out at 1280X1024.

Then again, my video card is overclocked to hell and back tounge.gif. Running at 800/1900/475 (core/shader/memory).

Haven't really tested out IV with the CPU at stock, too lazy tounge.gif.

Looks good, but you shouldnt get a FPS boost by oc the Qx9650 from 3.84 to 4 Ghz, since according to my tests after 3.67 Ghz and patch 1.0.2, the bottleneck becomes the GPU ( 1 Gb VRAM limit), not the quad. Btw GTA 4 is reading correctly your efective VRAM, 1 Gb as you know (2 x 1 Gb total, but only 1 Gb effective). colgate.gif

Actually my goal is to reach 4.18Ghz (1860FSB, 930MHZ RAM), I'm currently at 1688FSB and 844mhz RAM. My friend did it on water cooling, extreme edition CPU. I hope I could even get close to his results biggrin.gif

I'll see what I can do tonight though, hopefully I'll beat your benchmarks wink.gif

LOL. My rig is nothing compared to your's or Aidan's. You can't even compare a 8600GT to a GTX280 or 4870X2 blush.gif. But I was on a strict budget and this rig is way better than the PIII rig I was using before tounge.gif.

@Maraca, I just revised the around $1000 build a little more as my previous one was messed up.

I made two builds, an ATI build and a nVidia build. Go with what you prefer. Keep in mind though that both of these builds would be able to run IV maxed out with absolutely no problems wink.gif.

The motherboard is changed as this is a better board for the same price. The RAM too is changed as the one chosen before isn't really needed at all if not overclocking.

Build:

Sunbeam Silent Storm

Thermaltake Purepower 600W

MSI X58 Pro

i7 920

GSkill 6GB (3X2GB) DDR3 1333 PC3 10666

Powercolor HD4870X2 if going with ATI or PNY GTX285 if going with nVidia.

Totals to $1,244.93 with the ATI card and $1,169.93 with the nVidia card.

well, it is a high price for an very high-end rig, if he have the money then he can buy it, An average gamer not really needs this so very expensive record's breaking hardware for ultra gaming with high AA. for all the games to be playble in max settings, lower and cheaper rigs should do the job, but it's up to him.

thanks so much warlord. Ron, what kind of rig did you have in mind. Also warlord, can you do a $600 the same way again? Thanks, cause I'm just realizing that i'd have to double my budget.

I feel really bad for pestering you guys, but what it all comes down to is timing. I'd really like a nice laptop in 3.5 years when I go off to college. If I build this nice expensive rig, even the $600 one, 1. there's no way that i could take it to college, and 2. I won't have enough money to buy the laptop. And if I want to sell it I won't get good money for it at all. So unless there's a way to transfer all of those nice parts that i would buy from a desktop to a laptop (which there is not). I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

forget now from laptops, in 3.5 years we will have better laptops for cheaper prices, Take what ever rig you want, the best or just the min to play max settings games, for 600$ I will advice the "GTX260 55nn" + cheap quad with good extra air-cooler, all the other hardware should be the min to handle your rig.

This is the best I could do for your budget, but it overshoots your budget slightly. For $623.93:

Sunbeam Silent Storm

Thermaltake Purepower 600W

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L

Core 2 Quad Q6600

G.Skill 4GB (2X2GB) DDR2 800

MSI HD4830 512MB GDDR3

Western Digital Caviar 500GB SATAII 32MB Cache

There wink.gif.

thanks. Again, this may seem totally random, but what could i do to this to make it run gta?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.2 GHz

NVIDIA GeForce 6150

2 GB (DDR2 SDRAM)

PCI Express

Max Supported RAM 4 GB

Hard Drive Capacity 250 GB

Motherboard NVIDIA nForce6150

I'm not sure how many watts the power supply has, but definetly not a lot.

What can I do minimally to make gta IV run?

damn, it is like my rig, I bought it for 750$ in 2008's september in Israel, there evrything is 30% more expensive then in the US prices, I was happy for my rig for that price, till I played GTAIV and Crysis.

Now I know that I did a good deal, I got also 500watt PS, and GA-P35-DS3L motherbourd, and DVDRW for that 750$ rig.

Well, you'd have to get a proper power supply with enough power and a graphics card as it seems like it has onboard graphics which would NOT cut it for IV.

But even if you get a power supply and a graphics card, it'll still be held back by the processor as it's really weak.

Sorry but the 6150 can't even run GTA IV. The minimum is ATI X1900 or Nvidia 7900 which are alot stronger than your card.

The only way you could get GTA IV to run is to upgrade your graphics card. If you are looking for a graphics card and you're low on budget I recommend this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102715

This card, combined with your processor and RAM should let you play GTA IV at 1280 res on medium settings with 20+FPS smile.gif
