I will also use it for normal tasks like writing essays, surfing the web. Will it still only last 2 years. Or based on these requirements should I do something totally different. It's a better card and it's worth the price more than the GTX285. I didn't want it to come to this, but there's no other choice. Ron is talking total and utter bullsh*t when he says that it won't last even two years. That $1000 system has some of the most high end components currently available, if that won't even last two years, then how are there still people who run IV maxed out with 8800GTs? The 8800GT was released in 2006! Same for the Q6600, it was release back when Core 2 was first out and there are still gaming systems that use it. I am won't say OMG. a gaming computer is like any other computer just stronger, you can abuse it as much as you want (have fun BTW). It will work as long as you want. it won't last 2 years for gaming, because new games will be in that future more hardware demended, what you able to play today you will able to play even 8 years from now. Or are you asking whether it will be outdated in four years? If you're asking whether it'll live for four years, then yes, it'll live for WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY longer than four years. You have nothing to worry about. Computers last for a LONG time. You'll be able to use it for ten or more years for sure. Me and Ron were talking about it being outdated all this time . Same for the Q6600, it was release back when Core 2 was first out and there are still gaming systems that use it. first, an OC 285gtx is all a gamer can want, to spend more money for extra 5-9FPS is his choice. let's take a bet about 2 years, I mean that the GPU won't last 2 years, the other hardware will be fine for 3-4 years. The GPU market is burning any day, in 1 year we will have 3-4 times stronger GPUs, the leap will be huge relative to the differece between 9800GT to 295GTX. Alright, now that that's settled, even though you say that new games coming out in 2010 will be optimized for the larrabe, will I still be able to run next gen games on MEDIUM SETTINGS, as in 2012? Otherwise, should i just buy a crap one now that will play gta 4, then upgrade when the larabee comes out? I can't imagine that next gen games still won't work well with a gtx 280, it makes no sense. anus Posted February 13, 2009 Share Posted February 13, 2009 Games won't be optimized for just Larrabee when it comes out, the game will be optimized for all other graphic cards as well. With a card as beastly as the 4870X2, you'll be able to run games maxed for quite a long time to come. This is why I recommend the 4870X2 so much, because of it's brute power. Future games will work fine with the 4870X2, Ron just seems to have gotten confused with what I said. Conclusion: That rig will allow you to play games maxed out for a long time to come. But the 920 is enough to last for a long time. Remember that the i7 is still brand spanking new technology. The HD4870X2 is worth every cent over the GTX285. Believe me. You will NOT regret it. I never said that the i7 won't be good in 3 years, just that the 4870X2 and our all GPUs generation will be like "6600ultra today" in just 2 years. I am sure that for the "2011 spore" even my rig would be graet. But for the high graphics of 2010 (like the next unannounced Crysis)it will be like to play Crysis warhead with 7900GT OK I checked 285GTX (basic edition) vs 4870x2, and yes the 4870X2 is faster, I just noticed that all the games very playable on max settings and only Crysis worth the better 4870X2 for extra 70$. And still and OC 285GTX will be just fine for the high settings of Crysis, again OC 285GTX is all that a gamer need but the 4870X2 is really better card, which won't really help you 2 years from now, you will have to upgrade anyway. Look we can recommending things till 2010, I just say that a OC 285GTX is stronger in 15% then the sh*tty 280GTX with 65nn core. I don't think that any gamer needs this extra 5-10 FPS in supported crossfire games for extra 70$-80$. You didn't reat all the thread, warlord offers stock 4870x2 + stock speed i7 to a 15 years old kid that has 600-1000$ for new rig and doesn't want to OC at all . aidan87 Posted February 13, 2009 Share Posted February 13, 2009 (edited) I've tried my mate's GTX 280 on my rig and the 4870X2 had a better benchmark, but gameplay performance was pretty similar.. the truth is GTA IV is more CPU and VRAM dependent. Of course, the HD4870x2 that was the strongest card in the market is still strong and has good price of 400$, the problem of this card is that it is still too expensive relative to an OC 285GTX and relative to the 500$ 295GTX, I persony have problem to buy dual cards because the unsupported games and because you pay for half effective video-memory, I also remember that the second card gives just 70% extra performance over the first one. I think that for 350$ the 4870x2 could be the best highend card to buy, but a pricing between the 285GTX and 295GTX make it less attractive for a non AMD fanboy.
