Build a computer to play GTA:IV at best ability

Hmm. Well, I think you should try out this. It may fix your issue as it's fixed a lot of general problems with IV for me.

Oh and about the quad, you're not noticing a big improvement because your settings aren't all that high. Your res isn't all that high either.

If you try the game maxed out at a res like 1680x1050 on the old dual and then the Q6600, you'll REALLY see a difference.

I want that GTX295... Grrr

my only problem is i can't find one here.

What settings do you think is recommended on my specs?

DO I NEED TO UPGRADE TO???

INTEL CORE i7 extreme processor

NVIDIA GTX 295 graphics processor

To play GTA 4 the GTX 295 isnt a good idea, due to the poor SLi support of the game + only 896mb of effective VRAM, a GTX 280/285 would be much better. colgate.gif

If you can't find a 295, get a GTX285.

Anyway, for the current PC you have. Before you do anything, overclock that CPU to atleast 3GHz (or more tounge.gif).

After that, I think you'll probably be able to play fine at a res like 1280x1024 with everything on medium. But don't expect 60FPS. I think with the settings I mentioned, the max you could get is about 30FPS, but that would be really rare.

Best thing to do would be to get the GTX285. And if you have enough money to spend on a GTX295, you might as well get a better CPU wink.gif.

I think I found the problem. I disabled speedstep in the bios.

My dual core was benchmarking 85-90% usage whereas the quad only 50-55%.

Have been pelting up and down star junction in a comet without jerks or stutters.

Scratch that... dont get the GTX 295... its a problematic dual GPU solution (like all of them out there) and you are limited to 896 mb of vram in gta4... even though on the box it says 1795 of vram... gta 4 really uses just one card for vram... get the GTX 285 or the 280 wich is almost the same exept its a single card with 1 GB of certified vram. In gta 4 it says 1008 mb of available vram ram not 892 mb like the 295. I bought a GTX 280 and sold my GTX 295 because of games like this... with the gtx 295 I had microstutter issues in almost all games including old ones like BF2... since im with the 280 no problems at all... and I can even max out even more my GTA 4 than when I used to own my GTX 295... word of advice dont get single PCB dual gpu solutions... one PCB is meant for one GPU, its a little less ruff on the PCI express slot... so if you want to go SLi buy other gtx 280 and your set!

lol I never thought of that. Haha. Good to know it's finally fixed though.

I always disable SpeedStep and C1E when overclocking, best to turn those two off.

Yes, I did disable CIE too.

I quite like the speedstep function for the power saving, so that's why I left it on before. However, game performance comes first!

ps. How do I include the poster and time with the "quote" function?

Press the "Quote" button on the top right of the post you wish to quote.

Honestly dude, with a good PC like that, I'm surprised that IV is the only game that you play.

I'd say get Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, COD4, Test Drive Unlimited, Bioshock (but you already know that tounge.gif), FEAR 2, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Athena and maybe Godfather 2.

Drop by the PC game topic in Gaming Chat sometime mate. All us PC gamers hang there wink.gif.

vicedens2002 you'll want to overclock that CPU more to get better performance. That E6600 can easily do 3.4Ghz on decent cooling. GTA4 is very CPU intensive, so every little bit you can get out of your CPU will have a big impact.

These are my scores on my E7200 when it's overclocked to 3.8ghz (it's an old run through, I run at 4.1Ghz now)

I just changed my overclock from 9 x377 to 8 x 425, still 3.4Ghz, memory running 850 instead of 755.

Now running much better, smoother with less popins. I have to say that my dual core at the same settings was very good too, about 10 fps slower, but there is not that much difference 40 to 50 fps. Smoothness and lack of artifact is more important. I would be interested to know what people think comparing a quad with a dual. I would guess a dual @ 3.6Ghz would outperform quad at 2.4Ghz by some margin.

Your motherboard must have space to fit 2 or more cards. The setup you are looking for is called "SLI". If your motherboard is standard, it should support SLI, but if you're running on a micro-ATX motherboard, you may encounter problems setting up SLI on your computer.

My motherboard is micro-ATX and supports up to 2 cards in SLI mode (there isn't space for 3) but my old motherboard didn't even have space for a second card even though it "supported" SLI.

So in the end it's all about the physical dimensions of your motherboard as most mobos these days support SLI already.

I am a GTX 285 and upgraded from a GTX 260 as well as a GTX 280. Believe me, the 285 has far less micro-stuttering than the 280. In fact, I don't even see any stuttering on the GTX 285 except in... GTA IV. Yep. Even Crysis Warhead has no stuttering. But GTA IV does.

I have to agree, only IV has given me problems.

I re-installed Crysis just so I could try out my new cards on the Crysis benchmark tool, I certainly wasn't disappointed in anyway.

If you hold off a little bit you can get one of those non reference cards and have 2gig memory too, an absolute winner for IV.
