This is what overclocking does to your fps

Does anyone know how to raise cpu fan speed with SpeedFan? I can't seem to get it to work.

SpeedFan sucks for pretty much everything IMO. Even for temps CoreTemp and RealTemp are WAY better.

Just go to your BIOS and disable Smart Fan Control and keep the fan speed at 100%, I don't hear any major noise from doing this at all.

@buzbegone, Read this guide here. Whether yours duo or quad won't matter as it shows how to overclock both. Read it carefully.

I can only find Fan EQcontrol, and it doesn't matter if I disable it, I still can't select the fan speed to change it.

Well, I just want to mention that to OC the CPU is not a magic at all, it is just wrong that AMD\INTEL won't sell thier CPU's with some normal cooler and higher numbers, from CPU OC with good cooler you really can get some 50&-70% performance increase, however this will be great only for GTAIV, when you play on settings that not bottleneck your GPU's memory bandwidth.

I OC my Q6600 from 2.4 to 3.0 GHZ (with the stock cooler), but didn't notice some good FPS increase cause my 9800GT is a bottleneck for a max settings gameplay, I will buy a new GPU in a 2Q and in addition some cooler, I think even to buy a "water" one, I can't understand why to buy some good air-cooler while the water one is not much more expensive.

Note for the topic creator: you sounds like a noob in OC, so I will just advice not to play with the voltage settings, cause you may damage your CPU, anyway I won't advice noobs to OC at all, they should read few days about OC before they should play with settings names that they don't really understand.

Overclocking is fun.

I go to the bios, change some random sh*t there.. vcore to 1.9. (just kidding)

Then I start testing, and watch The Simpsons on DVD while doing it. biggrin.gif

Dude don't worry about it, I got this. cool.gif (quoting Homer Simpson) sigh.gif

so i overclocked my c2d e6400 (2,1Ghz) to 3Ghz.

Now checking it with Everest and Prime if its all stable, but it seems so smile.gif

And yeah the difference between 2Ghz and 3Ghz can really make a difference. At 2Ghz its just too bottlenecked to enable wider view.

I totally agree, I had a cheap ass motherboard that my Q6600 sat in and I averaged 20-25, sometimes in the 30's and when I purchased a newer and much nicer Gigabyte board it all changed, I have a very cool and stable 3.2ghz now and I rarely drop below 50 fps now, even during the rain with a lot of action, it's quite smooth.

In GTA IV, this is what I got after 2 mins of gameplay when I OCed my Q8200 from 2.33 GHz to 2.5 GHz:

note: not actual error message

LOL

I can tolerate framerates of 20 and over, so I'm happy with stock CPU speed.

Nevertheless, I will try OCing again and see what happens. biggrin.gif

I'd take a look at your RAM timings and voltage, you should be able to get more of an OC out of that chip. Start slowly and work your way to it.

Upping your CPU/Mobo FSB increases RAM speed, this is a fact.

Ouch, when you realize you're wrong, you should usually stop posting.

Or dare I say you haven't realized you're wrong yet? Anyhow I'm not here to teach anyone about the relationship of your processor, FSB, and memory. You mentioned something about Google/Wikipedia, you can use those to figure out where you're going wrong.

Let me just say this:

Examine the specs in my signature.

You'll notice my CPU is overclocked, yet my memory is actually underclocked from stock.

Oops!

I love how you said "CPU FSB" and "RAM FSB". Hahaha, so funny, a good laugh is always welcomed in the early morning.

The internet is such a fun place. Especially these forums.

note: Even if your cpu temp is low it wont say that it's okay to overclock, If you clock to far your CPU will start to count wrong and will become unstable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, my x2 athlon black edition has an unlocked multiplier and I am able to OC it without raising the FSB or voltage. So I guess that doesn't affect the RAM?

Those screenshots look awesome dude, I wish I could play it looking like that.....

My Qx9650 is also unlocked, but there is a (small) limit to increase the multiplier without working on voltage - youll have to check it by yourself. Changing the multiplier value wont affect RAM settings. wink.gif

Yep, it doesn't affect your RAM. So jack up the multiplier as high as you can tounge.gif.

@AndreasEr, Do you mind telling me what settings you play IV at and how much FPS you get smile.gif?

Stop bashing the other members...

The sentence is right, if you dont change anything else on your system. If you edit the RAM multiplier, your ram can of course have another Mhz-Rate than the FSB

yeah thats called a divider. when you overclock your cpu using the FSB YOU DO INCREASE THE RAM SPEED TOO. everyone knows this except for you. i think AMD motherboards support unlinked overclocking. but intel motherboards the ram and cpu are linked. meaning if you raise one the other automatically goes up by an equivalent number unless you use a lower divider.

coretemp and speedfan have the same readings. unless you are using an old version. the intel TAT actually reads 15c higher depending on which mobo you have.

im happy for the OP that they were able to wrangle some decent fps out of this turd pile. overclocking from 1.6ghz to 3ghz nets like 5 more fps in this game. w00p w00p. overclocking my ram got me like 3 more fps.

so from 1.6ghz stock with 2gigs of ram and a 4850 i got like 18-23 fps between lowest settings and maxed out in highest res.

at 3.0ghz i get 23 - 28fps. from lowest to highest.

that like...f*cking bullsh*t considering im playing burnout paradise at a blazing 45fps locked with vsync with everything maxed out and using edge detect AA.

i even loaded up crysis the other day to run it maxed out in dx10 and guess what it runs at 40+fps. lol. this game is coded terrible and ported even worse.

also vicetopia your ram isnt running underclocked its running at stock speeds, and at stock speeds you should be able to get tighter timings than that unless you have value ram. mines running at 435/870mhz with 4-4-4-12.

sorry bout the large pics i couldnt get thumbnails and its a little late to go back and resize em.

How can you guys change the resolution more than 1280x1024? Is it because of my monitor? I have a GTX 260 videocard, 3.0 Ghz CPU and 4 Gb RAM. And my GTA is edgy as sh*t ^^

Link to comment

you can only raise the resolution as high as your monitor supports. if the highest you see is 1280 then thats the highest your monitor can support or its not detected right.

if your monitor can go higher then use the commandline. read the readme.txt look at the bottom for instructions.

by egdy i guess you mean jaggy? its because this game doesnt support AA. try pressing p in the game to use the blur filter.

what program would be most suitable to overclock my amd 64 x2?

If your on a Dell like me and can't overclock in the BIOS the software I found is called CBID Central Brain Identifier - and in there you can change the multiplier and stuff. Another app called Clock Gen can be used to up the FSB - or go to AMD site and try AMD overdrive but it didn't work for me (can't detect my CPU because I have nvidia chipset)

The internet is such a fun place. Especially these forums.

On most motherboards, the RAM frequency will increase proportionally with the FSB.

I.e. let's say you have a CPU running @ 266*9=2.4GHz at stock and the RAM @ 533MHz (1066MHz DDR2/PC8500) with a 1:2 divider to the FSB.

You increase the CPU frequency to 400*9 = 3.6GHz, you will also set the RAM frequency to 400*2 = 800MHz (1600MHz, which is quite hard to achieve). To avoid this high RAM frequency, just change the memory divider to something like 4:5 and you will have the RAM running at 500MHz (1000MHz) and the CPU at 3,6GHZ smile.gif

The exception that I know of is some motherboards with a nVidia chipset, where you can set the memory to a fixed frequency not affected by the FSB.

As I said, Prime sucks and doesn't really stress the CPU  colgate.gif

By the way, why does IntelBurnTest make the processor so hot? There should be some way to change how hot it can make it (other than lovering your vcore).

Not even GTA IV makes my CPU even nearly as hot even after hours of playing. IBT get's it 10-15°C hotter than I've ever got it without a program like it.

The massive stressing it does is pointless when it's not ever going to get that hot when I play anyway.

60c is fine for full load and this is your real full load temp

What do you mean by that? Prime95 makes my CPU almost exactly as hot as GTA IV makes it.

I'm not saying it's a bad program to test with, but when I start raising the vcore, IBT makes my CPU too hot and I can't use it anymore. That's probably mainly because I haven't yet found a way to make the fan go at full speed.

i think its kinda true that GTA4 likes to crash more on OCd systems.

i had my PC stable at 3.4 for 24 hrs on Prime and did 6 hrs of OCCT 3.0 and a few of linpack. everything rna perfect except GTA4 liked to havee corruptions in it once in a while or flat out freeze in game play.

I need some tips with overcloking too, because one time i tried it and i just destroyed my mobo.

Can somebody give me tutorial or say how to overclock?

you shouldnt need to overclock just to play a game in sh*tty quality with sh*tty performance. do yourself a favor and just uninstall if you cant get good performance with that cpu at that speed. overclocking aint gonna help jack sh*t. i got mine at just about 3ghz and framerate barely reaches 25 , its usually around 18 down to 10 in lots of action and up to 50fps if im indoors looking at a wall.

I still think it is funny when some says" I can play Crysis maxed out".

It only has about five textures to load because all the trees are the same and as for Burnout, that has pretty much nothing on the screen other than cars to talk about.

If you really want to say you have Crysis maxed out, try switching on the AA, will see your FPS fall then.

Overclocking is worth doing not just for IV, everything benefits from the free speed increase. Otherwise why would people bother overclocking?
