That said, I'm curious as to the type of weapons available. I hope there will be some historical accuracy with the types of rifles available at the era (given it is around the time of the turn of the century I think) then weapons such as the M1903 Springfield would be available. Same with the pistols and shotguns etc.

Ah I knew it! I had a look and found what I think is the M1903 on http://media.rockstargames.com/products/ro...1280/new/32.jpg

Still, the trading mechanic of goods (shown on the introduction video) looks like it could be very good as well.

As to the inventory issues. Did anyone ever play 'True Crime: NYC'? That had a system whereby the trunk of your car had all your weapons, but you could only carry a limited number of weapons on your body. If your car got wrecked then it would end up back at the precinct and you could just get it again. If they did a similar thing on this where the horse has a saddlebag with all your things in. If it dies then you could have another horse waiting at a safehouse, although it wouldn't be the same horse, it would still have all your things. I know this isn't fully realistic as if your horse dies, it could get looted and your items stolen, however is the sake of full realism worth it for the few players who will care about it, or the masses who will just want to play the game regardless? The answer is about profit and therefore about the masses, therefore I severely doubt it will be very realistic in this sense.

But bear in mind, that when considering realism in terms of gameplay in general, you can slow down time. So if you had a very high degree of realism in terms of inventory and wanted a realistic game, then the idea is flawed because of the ability to use 'dead eye'. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see the guy pull a Buffalo rifle from where the sun doesn't shine, but in the end I don't think it would bother me a great deal if the gun changed from his back to his hand etc. The other thing as well is ammo. An inventory wheel is okay, but if you have a revolver, shotgun, rifle, sniper, throwing knives and dynamite, they're not exactly going to all over his body or represented properly, otherwise he'd be huge and the weight would be unbelievable.

I think having an inventory that can hold anything thanks to magic yet having a rather restricting limit on how many guns you can use at the same time based on whats physically possible is silly. I don't think it'll make the combat any more intelligent, I think it would just be irritating. Its just such an obvious contradiction and inconsistency to the point of being a distraction. "Why can I carry all the weapons I want in my bag, but I can only use two?" And if you can use the weapons that are in your inventory, why would you ever want to put them in your horse's saddlebags? Why would you put that reliance on the horse when you can do it yourself?

Aside from that, I don't think a limited load-out would add much depth to the gameplay. Even if you have a limited arsenal its still gonna be "bang bang bang - mission complete". Common sense would say "bring a rifle if you're in the open, a shotgun is you're in close quarters and a sniper rifle if you're gonna have some height" and you'd be doing the same job. Having all your weapons on you just lets you have more fun with it and experiment more. And thats just for missions. If you're out in the wilderness exploring you're gonna have your worse with you anyway, and thus all your weapons, so if you run into a spot of trouble you can grab what you need.

It would just seem like complexity and limitations being added with the only effect on the gameplay being more hassle and restrictions without the additional strategy. Complexity can be good, but I just don't think its neccessary to that extent. I want to keep all my gear with me and be ready for anything and everything.

I just think it`s boring to have every weapon you want instantly at your disposal, requiring no thought or risk from the player. Where`s the challenge? I'd honestly forego the inventory and take good care of the horse. I like Stev's idea of the horse respawning better than my own. Some people might like a cakewalk, it just makes me feel like an idiot. You also lose the replay value of going through the game again with different weapons.

I agree with you joseph, but you worry too much... the great thing about a game like this, is CHOICE is yours. You don't have to use all the weapons, it's entirely up to you. Want to complete the game only using the knife? Go ahead, but keep in mind there are also gamers on the other side of the spectrum who want to use a different weapon for each kill. I think what they're trying to do is cover all the bases... give every player type the option to play the way they want with as many or as little weapons as they choose.

It's not that simple. The game is being built around having constant access to a plethora of weapons. It's not just some side aspect that you can choose whether or not to use.

I tried to play IV with only a[n assault]rifle and side arm but the temptation was always there and I always ended up giving in when things got tough.

Hopefully I'm wrong and there is some kind of 'casual/hardcore' option that will let you choose between a magic inventory and a realistic bare-bones storage system. Probably just wishful thinking though. sigh.gif

I don't think the challenge comes from what weapons you can use. I'd agree with you there if there were grenade launchers, RPGs, flamethrowers, miniguns and other high powered equipment that mow down enemies. but the weapons in RDR (besides the mounted gattling guns and cannons) are pretty basic and will all require some proficiency to use effectively. I don't think being able to carry more than a handgun and a rifle will have any effect on the difficulty of the gameplay. All I see it doing is making it less fun by leaving me without a weapon I want and forcing me to go back and hunt for one. I call that Fake Difficulty. tounge.gif

....Just like GTA4, the trailer I saw at a Gamestop is better then any thing I've seen thus far, I commented with a clerk about the wide open areas being considered boring by some, well, three of us in the store are not prone to thinking such things....yet

Fingers crossed

Well, if you had to go hunt for weapons then that would be your fault for losing your horse and saddlebag in the first place. There would be ample space for a variety of weapons and you just have to whistle the horse over. It would be so much more immersive and so much more badass.

You might bring the word fun into the argument, and there`s nothing wrong with that, but where`s the fun in totally outgunning your opponents? What sense of achievement do you get?

I`m currently doing Mass Effect 2 on `insanity` and you get a real burst of adrennalin when you`re doing a mission cause you`re always under attack. Do a few missions and you`re buzzing and exhausted. I know they didn`t have thoe weapons back then and I`m not saying they should have powers or anything, don`t get me wrong. But they could get that excitement using period weapons if they piched the gunplay more towards the movies "Open Range" or "Appaloosa" and made every shot count. I`m afraid that it`ll just be a lightweight game of Whack-A-Mole, waiting for enemies to pop their head out of cover.

What if I'm in a building, or somewhere inaccessible to a horse? What if I'm on a train? It just sounds like a pain in the ass to have to rely on my horse to carry my weapons when I should be able to do it myself.

Limited loadouts work for some games, but not for free-roamers IMO. It worked in Uncharted because you were constantly swapping out weapons as you progressed through each level. It worked in Call of Duty because you have a singular objective of your choice and can choose the right weapon for the job. But in a free-roaming game you're being faced with a wider variety of situations that are unpredictable, and its best to be equipped for all scenarios at all times.

It seems that you're equating having more weapons with having easier combat. Why? Its not like having more than one rifle means you're gonna have a tremendous advantage the same way having a rocket launcher would. If the shooting does become a Whack-A-Mole game it won't be because of the weapons available.

Don't mean to break up yer conversation re: weapons, but I have this feeling we're gonna get some new info this week. Not the multiplayer video, but maybe an update to one of the feature sections, or an article with some screens, or another of those shorter videos... I really hope so anyway. All the speculative talk on various forums is gettin stale and I'm hungry for some real fresh concrete information.

I have to agree with you. Although I don't agree with you about it becoming stale, I feel some new info is comin this week as well. It's funny, seemed like they were giving out too much information, but now that it has dried up a bit, I want more info. tounge.gif

This thread has some very good conversation going on though, and it makes me look forward to coming back here as much as possible.

Oops, didn't mean to insinuate that the talk in this forum is stale, was mainly referring to other RDR forums, like the IGN RDR board. I have to agree with you that this thread contains the most worthwhile comments, suggestions, and image/video investigation out there, and it keeps me coming back too, but I guess my greed/hunger for more info lead me to other forums overflowing with ridiculously pointless and uneducated posts (like "yo, R ther horses N this gaim?") that I guess I over-generalized my criticism.

No offence to anyone in this thread, especially those who post well thoughtout and insightful comments and suggestions. Keep'em coming.

I found a short review or preview of the original in a Playstation magazine, it was within a collectible issue with Vice City prominently featured. Does the original seem that old to you?

Yeah, pretty old. But I thought it came out well after Vice City. Two years after VC it was released, I think.

Damn, I am f--king old.

I think he's talking about Lead and Gold, not RDR.

I can't wait. Tomorrow, I am finally going to stop procrastinating and am pre-ordering.

Someone pointed out to me that the developer/publisher of Mafia II (2k games) wasn't on there, but it was still shown. Perhaps the same will happen for RDR?

Well, I was wrong... here it is Friday and no news. Oh well, guess I'll re-watch the previous videos again and hope we get something next week.
