What blew me away is that there is a cheat to play as Jack, but not to play as John again. I can't believe Rockstar never saw what a mistake this was, and made a small patch for it.

Totally agree with you. I don't like Jack at all, even after playing as him for quite a while. R* should have added this.

Adding that in would mean that achievements would have been blocked for completing the game. It is a good idea though.

On my newer save I've been a bit of a completionist. Doing every stranger mission that I missed on my first (I was eager for the story stfu) and unlocking every outfit.

 

Treasure Hunter pissed me off so much. It wasn't the unlocking of it, that was pretty easy. It's when I finally unlocked it.

In the silhouette it looked like a badass coat and sh*t, without the hat. I unlocked it, put it on and thought

"What the f*ck is John wearing?"

It's some frilly pink shirt and it looks horrible. I know it's supposed to be like the Treasure Hunters gang, but

come on, couldn't they think of something a little more badass?

The reason I'm not doing them as Jack is because the strangers never age. Jenny stays 20 for the rest of her life whilst Edgar and co. age like 30 years.

Riding without the HUD is so great. I love the music playing in the background. I just spent an hour just riding around and seeing all the beautiful scenery. f*ck, I love this game!

You can buy the soundtrack on itune for £7.99 GBP (not sure of the exchange rate). Do it, it's a fantastic album, one i can listen to for hours. I think it's better than the Splinter Cell Conviction & Chaos Theory STs (which i like) and the Assassin's Creed one too. I think Undead Nightmare's on there too.

Anyways, I had to duel him and I killed him- yay. But I just want to get to the point, Herbert Moon is ANNOYING! What a racist, snooty-nosed douche he is. If I kill a cougar near Fort Mercer or so, I NEED to travel to Mexico so I can trade it in for mula, cause I just can't stand Moon!

 

Plus, Mexico gives you lots of cash for killing a cougar and selling their skin, meat, teeth.

Shame we didn't see him more often. I feel that apart from bonnie, west dickens, and Reyes (de Santa too) we don't see much of the characters.

You have to understand that his attitude was nothing abnormal. Many people felt that way, and many people would at least think it. Perhaps in the 1900s such attitudes were RSFSR but in the early 1800s I think there was a lot of zenophobia

Perhaps dating back to the war of independence? Maybe they saw the British and thus all other countries as unwelcome miscreants...

Its actually surprising how modern thinking and accepting John is during the game. I guess R* decided to be a little bit less realistic and not want the player to be in the shoes of a racist but its still weird.

I don't have much tolerance for Downer Endings and Shoot the Shaggy Dog in the first place, but pulling it in a videogame, where I've actually done something as opposed to sat there and read/watched, just really f*cking pissed me off.

I don't see how it means he wasted 30 hours of his life. Did he pay attention to the story? John died to save his family, wasn't that what he was trying to do the entire game? So isn't the ending the perfect embodiment of this. Its like everything was leading up to that point. I get not liking the ending but its not pointless at all. (Unless he hates Jack, which is understandable.)

I disliked the ending. Not because of the above reasons, but because i got attached to John. Seeing him die so helplessly, which the story demanded it, was a shock and one of the saddest moments of my gaming life. But he took all those shots and was still standing, sorta. It took a lot for him to die.

Yes jack is a douche, and R* could have done so much more with such a character. He could become a true badass, angry at the world that killed his pa, or a saint (player dependent) trying to honor his parents' memories.

 

 

John represents the transition between the wild west and the more civilized world that is coming. His death is representative of the death of the wild west and - think of Drew McFarlane's words here - John's entire adventure is a reflection of the last years of the old west - a valiant fight against the inevitable. The world is spreading, and the days of the wild west were limited. People fought it but in the end they, like John, succumbed to it. John was made modern i think to A make him likable and B show how modern the world in the early 1900s actually was. there were many aspects to his character and the story, and John is representative of that. RDR is nothing short of a work of art!

Question for you guys - I'm going to start a new play through - or probably play with my current game (that I havent touched in 5 months) since I brought my 360 downstairs to my HD Tv. Anyway, I'm just wondering what you guys think of the downloadable content. I'm quite tempted to buy it since I can only play so much with just the vanilla version. Just seems a little weird that there's zombies in RDR so I'm not 100% convinced its gonna be worth my money.

Undead Nightmare is so great. Its probably the only DLC (after Episodes from Liberty City) that is actually worth it. Its not too long though. Like 9-10 hours I think. It also adds a great multiplayer mode called Undead Overrun. Check a few reviews, if you like it, buy it. Its worth it. Dunno about the other DLC though as I got the GOTY Edition. They include multiplayer maps and a few other stuff.

DLC is, for the most part, beneficial for multiplayer. They added much for MP and it was free, or some of it.

 

I don't like zombies but UN was good. Yes, i'd say it's worth it - if anyone doesnt have the game, you can buy the ultimate edition that has UN and all DLC in it.

 

Also the war horse, deadly assassin outfits etc are cool. Liars and cheats and the DLC that adds the hunters/traders outfits are cool and iirc free.

 

Yeah, defo worth it imo, but the actual story on RDR itself isn't impacted by DLC

I bought Undead Nightmare last December, but only played the Single player. I really loved the Main game but Undead Nightmare was just average in my opinion. In the beginning it's fun when masses of Zombies run to you from all directions and you blow their heads of. But pretty soon you will end up constantly walkings backwards while shooting or climbing on small houses since Zombies can't climb. Also you can almost make no use of the hiding system. The game is never really scary because of its focus on action.

 

The storyline is funny but sometimes ridiculous.

Well Rockstar always goes the route where you're playing as a protagonist that doesn't fit into a general stereotype. There's always something that sets them apart from the other characters, which makes them an interesting protagonist.

 

On the topic of the other characters, yeah, I was a bit sad how you never really saw them again after John did what he had to do. But it's also a very realistic representation of the old west, seeing people come and go. John just wanted to round-up the ones from his old gang and go back to his normal life. Regardless, it was still sad to say goodbye to them all.

I seem to exclusively wear that outfit in Mexico for some reason. I don't know why. It's definitely and outlaw's outfit (i love the LOTW outfit too) but the game doesn't really support a true outlaw - i hope RDR3 allows us to truely be an outlaw badass
