GTA IV laggs after a few minutes

That's because you're using all those commands. Try using these two ONLY:

-memrestrict 314572800 -novblank

Test and post results.

@Pinky, I would've expected a 8800 Ultra to do WAY better than that really, I ran with 4.0 on my 8600GT fine tounge.gif.

The problem is not solved angry.gif

I created the commandline.txt with -memrestrict 314572800 and after few minutes the game starts to lag.

What can I do?

Its your processor. Its horrible for playing IV with. Try overclocking it or getting a new processor. Your video card is being held back by it.

I think that's not a problem of the CPU because the first time (15-45 minutes) I can play without lags, freezes and so far.

What anything can I do?

Is there a graphic quality difference between memrestrict 314572800 and -memrestrict 209715200?

I doubt this.

The CPU temperature is 47°C and the graphic card is without modifications.

Furthermore I have two 120 fan's installed.

bump

I didnt read all thread, but temps are ok, CPU is ok, and you still get lag, you may try a good HD defrag like Diskeeper Pro Premier, it has helped me once to fix a lag playing other game - fixed it completely, although the Windows defrag (thats in fact a version of Diskeeper basic) said my HD was fine. colgate.gif

Thank you for your help.

I will try to format the whole HDD with O&O Defrag. I don't have this program that you used.

I hope this will help but I defragment my HDD with Windows regular.

How long has it been since you last formatted and installed Windows?

It could be that it's time for a format.

But, you can try the following, I guarantee that you will get a performance boost:

Disable unwanted services by using this site. I use the "bare bones" configuration.

Update your anti-virus and run a full system scan with the strictest scanning options.

Download and install Ad-Aware and update it and run a full system scan with the strictest scanning options.

Download and install Spybot and update it and run a full system scan with the strictest scanning options.

Download and install CCleaner and clean your ALL your Windows and Application files. Clean your registry as well. Run each test atleast three times. Also disable all unwanted start-up items by going to Tools>Start-up.

Download and install RegistryMechanic and update it and clean your registry atleast three times and compact your registry.

Download and install UltimateDefrag and defragment your HDD atleast three times (it takes only a little time) with "strict placement" for files in the program's options. Run a boot time defragmentation to defragment files like the page file.

That's it! Enjoy wink.gif! You WILL gain FPS if you do this.

I have installed Windows XP for 3 weeks and disable all services, startup programs that I don't need, disable all optical features and so far. I maked all to 100% performance already.

I don't have installed an other game and much software, only Office, picture edit program and Kaspersky security. I don't have a virus or spyware, I'm sure!

I had a stuttering/laging issues until I installed new OS with fresh drivers. From that point on it's working a lot smoother. Even though I'm using Vista, I tried it on XP but to no avail. It didn't work well on my setup, it kept stuttering.

Have you tried to alt+tab out of the game and back in when starts to misbehave?

In my case I have installed/uninstalled few versions of GPU drivers and that caused problems fro GTA IV (even if not for any other game I played).

I have the Catalyst 8.12 and a rollback to 8.11 or older would be not a good idea because in 8.12 are some fixes.

In Catalyst 9.1 are no fixes for GTAIV so this will not solve my problem.

This is what I'm talking about.

You should format your system partition and install everything from the beginning. This is the only way you'll be sure that all traces of old drivers are removed.

And by the way, it's much quicker then looking for a fix for days.

I have already format my HDD and installed Windows XP new and then the Catalyst 8.12 and all other drivers. No old drivers or updates as yet, only the newest that were available in 3 weeks ago.

I got massive lag towards the end of a race last night. Fraps was still saying 25/30 but at points i was lucky to get 3/4. It was defo not overheating or a fragmented/slow harddrive.

Strange thing is, it was Drag Kings and it would be choppy around the shorter sections but once each way down the straight, it would become smooth for 10 secs then become choppy all of a sudden rather than gradually getting worse.

I use the availablemem 1.6 command and usually get good performance but this has happened a handful of times! Ususally its ok for the next race, i only mentioned it because i had to restart the game this time as it was unplayable the next race too.

It looks like a memory management issue in the game. If id have thought, id have looked at the lights on my ICYDOCK to see it my hd's were thrashing but i suspect that wasnt the problem.

If i have to remove the commandline to avoid this entirely id be pretty upset because at 1080p with high textures i can only set a view distance of 1 even with 768mb on card.

Please investigate R*.

Bump, this needs to be looked into.

Originally i only got this at certain points during laps and lasted for less than a second. I could live with that. My hardware hasnt changed but for the last two days, when it starts dropping frames it can last entire sections of the map while it still plays other parts well.

Generally it doesnt start as soon as i start playing and might take 3/4 races, but once its there i have to restart confused.gif

Gameplay temps & load,

You can see towards the end of the round, (i didnt leave the game right away so there is some idle time at the end) one of the cores load jumps which i would guess coincides with the last part of the track, which was unplayable (12fps but in two groups of 6 frames i would guess), where it was 35fps the previous lap.

Interesting how 2 cores are hardly touched, infact core 2 seems to drop as much load as core 3 gains at the time i guess the game goes choppy, and core 1 load drops 50% at the same time too.

Harddrives were not thrashing.

Yes, thats weird, i think its a bit strange your CPU usage too, i have the same CPU, but check my Qx9650 at 3.67 Ghz (usage immediately after some racing), all four cores are actually under load with similar usages, differently from yours, as youve noticed, weird eh ?

I just had a round to see what it would look like before the problem kicked in.

Very different picture to the one i posted above, and i guess the lower levels of load overall is because my cpu is only driving an old 8800, so theres not as much work to do overall.

Strange how the loads seem to become very uneven tho, and how that seems to coincide with the frame dropping.

Im sure these are just symptoms of the problem, i just hope someone can diagnose the problem soon.

Yes looks good now. Try to play on lower GFX settings, maybe the 8800 simply isnt enough for the availablevidmem 1.6 + your settings and resolution now. wink.gif

i cant accept that its good enough to cope with the settings i use for many 3/4 hour gamin sessions, and then becomes not good enough somehow on the 11th February during my 4th race of the day. That indeed would be a new precedent in pc gaming. sigh.gif

Also, ive already tweaked my settings down to make my lowest point 20fps rather than 18 in the rain, and it was working fine at higher settings for a long time.

Also, i know ive confused you all about my command line. I must have been stoned when i put it in smile.gif i am now using -availablevidmem 1.4 for 1gb of mem (although i didnt get this problem untill days after changing it from 1.6, which i did to get a couple extra fps) interestingly, the first thing i did yesterday was change graphics to normal limits and still got framedrops within 2 races (during the same windows session i had already got framedrop with modded settings), i think we can stop blaming hardware for this one.

lol biggrin.gif sure its your problem, not mine. wink.gif

Btw you just posted this :

"Very different picture to the one i posted above, and i guess the lower levels of load overall is because my cpu is only driving an old 8800, so theres not as much work to do overall."

And you're right, you cant expect a high quality performance at 1920 x 1080 running an old card like a 8800. colgate.gif

Are you a troll? If i can do 4 races, at (if no rain) 26/40fps, then suddenly at the same point each lap for the same length of time i get 12/15fps for short periods, even though the same track played perfectly well 10 mins ago, how does this show that "you cant expect a high quality performance at 1920 x 1080 running an old card like a 8800." when ive been doing it for weeks and winning ~70% of my races in 1080p?
