GTA IV PC running in emulation?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anybody else has thought of this. The slow speed that this game is running reminds me of trying to emulate console games on the PC. Is it possible that they didn't even port this game to native PC code and are just running the xbox or PS3 code in some kind of emulator? That would explain why it is so CPU intensive as all the code, even the graphics would have to be done in CPU. People are reporting that their GPU is running cool while running this game showing that the GPU isn't even being used much. The weird dos box that opens and stays on the desktop is another sign of something like this. Anybody have any way to tell if this is what is they are doing?

Dos window is from securom. Game is so cpu intensive because of all physics/traffic/scripts. It's complete city simulation. At first look at ps2 emulators. Even c2q is struggling, trying to emulate about 300mhz cpu of ps2. Now think about 3.2ghz multicore cpu with completely different architecture and whole bunch of specialised chips. It's not possible to emulate current gen consoles...maybe in 2020 but not now

I realize it probably wouldn't be possible to emulate the complete game but R* could be taking parts of the original code from the console (like the graphics engine) and just emulating them in CPU instead of totally re-writing them for PC graphics cards. The reason to do this would be to save time and money and get the game out before Christmas, at the expense of speed in the game.

No, no, no, just NO. All raw data like textures, sounds etc. could be taken from console version(also scripts seems to be same in pc and console versions) but engine is rewritten for sure. Emulating current gen consoles is just impossible. It's really different architecture.

Indeed it has been discussed, I did consider doing a very detailed post as to why it is absolutely impossible for current PC's to emulate the 360. I was going to stress how the PC is SIGNIFICANTLY different to the 360 version. I was going to show that the "dos box" was linked to securom.

But then I figured what is the point, anyone that actually thinks this game is running under emulation is seriously delusional and incapable of any logical reasoning. So I will do the next best thing and close this thread because it has already been discussed and it doesn't warrant another damn topic on the subject.
