Vanilla Shake
Link Group of Children Struck by Van in Chinatown; 2 Dead NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- Two children were killed by a delivery van and a third was seriously injured Thursday as their group walked from a library to a daycare center in Manhattan's Chinatown commercial district, authorities said. Bellevue Hospital treated 14 of the children for minor injuries, according to spokesman David Zackin. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on East Broadway as the children walked less than two blocks through the busy area, bound for the daycare center on Market Street. At the Red Apple Child Development Center, a police officer guarded the front entrance. Liana Flores, 34, came to pick up 4-year-old Chloe and 2-year-old Sophia, who were not involved in the accident. She said the atmosphere inside the school was "very quiet," with parents and teachers appearing shaken. "I could see on their faces they were upset," she said. "The teachers looked like they were about to break out in tears." The children who were hit had been at the Chatham Square branch of the New York Public Library for a monthly school visit, said spokesman Herb Scher. The librarian read to them for about half an hour, and then they browsed on their own. Investigators had conflicting reports about how the accident unfolded. According to one account, the driver got out of the silver van and left the engine running, then it moved. Police later said they believed the van was backing up at the time. The driver was being questioned by police. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said the area's "overwhelming amount of truck traffic" has been discussed at community meetings. "This is something that we have worried about for months and months," he said. The accident scene was clogged with ambulances and other emergency vehicles. The street is full of commercial properties with apartments above some businesses. An elevated subway runs nearby. On Monday, throngs will gather in the area to celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year. I think this is horrible. There's still not that much information yet, but still. Girish
As horrible as it is it happens all the time. True that. I have read so many articles in newspaper about small kids getting run over by buses and dumpsters; it's almost like a f*cking routine. The small roads and lack of proper sidewalks doesn't help either. It's always sad to hear about small lives being brought to such an abrupt end. I wouldn't want to be their parent. There are no proper sidewalks around most schools either and the underpaid drivers don't care.

Hayden
They should have referred to it as an "incident" not an accident. An accident implies that no one is at fault. Sucks eh, but these things happen, probably just negligence on the driver's behalf.
Ultraussie
Kids can be unpredictable. The driver of that car musta been imprisinoed for manslaughter (AKA 25 to life) knowing America's twisted/harsh legal system. R.I.P. Victims of the accident, and imagine the pain those perants have to endure.

Got a problem with that? of course i dont have a problem with it. it just seems like a trend that stated. i actually read(and usually comment) on the news article threads. i have spent my life avoiding news, and joking with people that i get all my news from yahoo's front page. for the past 2 weeks alot of yahoo headlines ended up here at gtaf. that is where my comment came from. I think his question was based on the fact that "dumpsters" here are not vehicles, but large containers for garbage. I assume you're referring to what we would call a dump truck. Anyway, sad story.
