Huge GTA IV: The Lost and the Damned Hands-on

Recommended Posts

SlappingOysters

Gameplayer has gone live with a thorough hands-on playtest of the first episodic DLC pack for GTA IV. Stacks of new info and 12 new screenshots.

The Lost and Damned, the first of two Xbox 360 exclusive downloadable episodes for GTA IV, is the prefect example of DLC done right. And if you think you've second guessed Rockstar and know what to expect then you may be quite surprised by what you read below… we certainly didn't see it coming.

finished reading thats about it, if you want to read it click the link above.

new interiorsw open old interiors closed.

niko is present in the DLC...

It is a completley different perspective of the city ( because you have new safe house's in new areas it fells new apparently) they were bigging it up saying for DLC its brilliant.

you are vice president of the biker gang, your place is the bike behind him

if any of your gang die they will be replaced (but they will be NooB)

Safe house has free weapons + activities including arm wrestle

jonnys bike (Hexer) is the only one of its type, once its blown up its gone (all bikes have improved handling....

Phone is different comes with loads of numbers allready, plus bike drop offs contacts etc...

Johnny was told by Elizabeta Torres to kill Niko if he got in the way during the heroin deal.

The depth of pedestrians has been increased, in particular around Alderney, with a lot more variation and dialogue.

There are new vehicles, new mini-games, new internet sites and new television shoes

There are now checkpoints mid-mission. So if you die and then do the quick restart from your phone at the hospital exit, you will not start back at the mission trigger. You’ll start at the point you drove to from that trigger.

The sound library has been increased with a multitude more throwaway comments from NPCs.

Speaking of which, there will be stack loads of new music and DJ banter on the radio: we cannot comment on what we heard, other than to say that there is definitely a leaning towards your old-school rock and metal.

Johnny runs a lot slower than Niko, which is admittedly quite annoying at first as you struggle to evade death.

The members of your gang not only have stats that increase each time they fight (assuming they survive) but also have their own strengths and weaknesses. Their character uniqueness.

Johnny can be moved about in his seat while riding his bike, with Euphoria providing some pretty cool animations reminiscent of Arnie in Terminator 2.

The Lost owe money to Ray Boccino, who was spotted in the clubhouse speaking to Billy during one of the cut-scenes.

Most members in The Lost have their own unique bikes that cannot be found elsewhere in the city.

We played a mission called Shifting Weight in which Johnny finds himself with two members of North Holland’s Uptown Riders MC – Malcom and DeSaun - in a coke deal gone bad. As the cops bear down, helicopter and all, you jump on the back of a bike and use your automatic shotgun to take out chasing pigs and – if your are good enough – the copter. Explosives line the side of the road and well placed shots deliever satisfying John Woo like slow-mo explosions. Stacks of fun.

How big is the episode? Well through Johnny’s eyes it is as big as the original in truth, but in terms of narrative and unique gameplay Rockstar are claiming it is 1/3 the size of what was in the original GTA IV.

Each member of the gang’s stats are referred to as their “battle hardened” status.

The Lost and Damned content is not accessed through your phone.

GTA IV has not been touched at all and will remain as is: there is no backwards integration of Johnny’s story into Niko’s.

The bike physics have been fine-tuned beyond what was seen in GTA IV and handle a lot more responsively.

Multiplayer “isn’t been talked about right now”, but from our read of the body language in response to this question, there will be Lost and Damned specific game modes online.

Angels in America is a mission that’s triggered soon after Billy arrives back from rehab. Billy shoots an Angels of Death member and you have to race after his brothers and kill them before they get back to the Angel’s clubhouse in Algonquin with the news.

Blind-firing the grenade launcher is more satisfying than an ice-cold beer on a f*ckin’ hot day. The SFX is wicked too - “thump!”

Naturally all the side-joys of the Liberty City world are available to you: so you can still go and get maggot with Johnny and then Euphoria your way all the way home.

The bike gangs in The Lost and Damned turn up as groups you can deal drugs with in the (brilliant) DS game, GTA: Chinatown Wars.

When you play the mission that is Johnny’s perspective on Niko’s “Blow your Cover”, it is actually called “Buyer’s Market”.

We actually played Buyer’s Market three times. Only once did we see the body fall from the rooftop. The first time we went out the front door and lost our battle with the cops on the street. The second time we tried the front again, then barred it and run out through the back door. The third we went straight to the back door and saw it. So it must be a timing thing, rather than a scripted event.

Eagle-eyed gamers would have noticed that Johnny’s character in the original GTA IV was far more detailed than most of the bit part players, which Rockstar believe was the biggest hint that he would end up starring in the DLC. Is there a second character in GTA IV that has similar attention to detail who may star in the second episode? You tell us below!

lol the last one i recon its bernie

SUPER BIG SPOILER

The Lost and Damned should be viewed with envy by PS3 and PC GTA IV fans.

I was thinking "Bloody hell £14?!" but now I'm thinking £14 is a bargain, it sounds awesome - far more than the simple thoughts of just adding more content. Truely looking forward to this now.

I think the main thing that needs to be posted here is this list:

  • Johnny was told by Elizabeta Torres to kill Niko if he got in the way during the heroin deal.
  • The depth of pedestrians has been increased, in particular around Alderney, with a lot more variation and dialogue.
  • Will Microsoft’s servers hold up?
  • There are new vehicles, new mini-games, new internet sites and new television shoes
  • There are now checkpoints mid-mission. So if you die and then do the quick restart from your phone at the hospital exit, you will not start back at the mission trigger. You’ll start at the point you drove to from that trigger.
  • The sound library has been increased with a multitude more throwaway comments from NPCs.
  • Speaking of which, there will be stack loads of new music and DJ banter on the radio: we cannot comment on what we heard, other than to say that there is definitely a leaning towards your old-school rock and metal.

I thought the same thing. It reminded me a little of the Rustler from San An aswell. Although that wasn't a van.

Awesome, simply awesome... biggrin.gif

Back when everyone was speculating on the DLC, I actually suggested they should use the Johnny and make a biker scenario with new hogs. Just wish I could find the post!! (maybe someone else knows where to find it, but It's an uncanny coincidence)

And Jacob was a pretty detailed character, and R* hasn't done much with the Yardies yet, could be next

Bizarrely the only character that stood out to me as more detailed than most was Brett (I think that's his name), the guy you have to shoot in the leg in Do You Have Protection? So let me be the first to say we'll be playing as a porn star in the next DLC colgate.gif

Yes he appears is "Buyers Market" which is Johnny's persective of Niko's "Blow Your Cover" mission.

I'm quite confident there'll be a Johnny's perspective on "Museum Piece" as well.

Definitely a prison bus. The pedestrians flying over and out of it, as you mentioned, are wearing prison uniforms. If you look closely, you'll also notice the windows are barred up.

Perhaps there's a mission where you're hired to take down a prison transport to/from Alderny State Correctional Facility? Maybe even a transport that has a few members of the Angels of Death.

This looks great! Definitely exceeding my expectations. At first, the whole biker idea didn't sound too great. But from what I have heard, this sounds great. I am curious though, will the weapons and vehicles carry over to Niko's side of the story?

No, i read in one of the previews that there will be no changes to Niko's side of the game.

So we won't be able to use the new weapons/vehicles, go into the new interiors or do the new side activities from TLAD with Niko.

Surely there willbe - Rockstar won't have created that prison with such detail just to have it there for random discovery; similarly to the Sprunk factory.

I can't say that I'm too fussed about that personally. The chances of me going back to play as Niko will most probably be very slim once I've got into TLAD. I've been a fan of Johnny ever since I first saw him in GTA IV and being able to play as him was like the best decision R* could've made to keep the new GTA era going, in my opinion. GTA IV is awesome, but it's time to move on. So yeah, not too fussed, me.
