chngdman
You're right, and I'm kinda just having fun with this Next ideas thing anyway. Can that stuff about the net and freedom be pruned out of here, and I'll edit this part of my post too? Mainly because that's like WAY off topic and pointless, and I feel that to leave it there -> I should change my sig for a while -> and if I don't -> It is kinda intrusive to the readers. I'm a very political type guy with this marketing stuff, and it really doesn't belong on the content at all, at least not where it is not the topic of discussion. It kind of looks like self promotion, and it's not, the sig is that as all sigs are, and it's already quoted. Maybe we can all edit that stuff out? I can't even believe people are still arguing about this. I think you're just not supposed to care It's true, and the topic was on point before we started talking about the differences between each canon and then it went into like a chat room or something. We all detracted this topic when we should have started a new thread or discussed it in one of the others. Let's get it back on topic : Do you guys think it is possible that R* is just saying that GTA IV is a whole new universe? Personally, no. Technically? Yes. They are just saying the words like "new universe", some say "separate canon", "dimensions", but it's not "cut and dry". It is figurative speech, yet the common production rules of video games and Hollywood apply. Imagine an alternate reality set in the same place. We know it is the same place because they refer to the same places, suggesting the same setting and geographical locations of each, and litter little pieces of remember-obilia around to let you know that hey this is the same place, it is just in a different dimension. Time is the only ingredient that is necessary for another dimension to take place, and as you know GTA IV takes place in October 2008 ish - in other words, 'current-day at release date'. GTA III, for example was 2000, as you hear in the opening news broadcast, and of course the newer LCS took place in 1998. By Rockstar Games' clock, it sounds about right: a little bit of change to a city between a couple of years, a whole lot of change to a universe after 8. Change is constant and probably the "maker" of time. Versions change appearances in all sorts of software. Eloquence in software, entertainment software. But it doesn't stop there with the GTA series man. You've got the rules of Hollywood. The code of the streets may be something that sells the game, but where else is that found but Hollywood? There is a whole lot more to this game than gangsters and guns and slick ass wheels. Prime moments in Hollywood lore show up all the time, and in the past, and indeed now, they still can't do what they really want to bring from the movies to the joypad, but lets stick to GTA itself and what it does to push that forward... Sure, there are movies that take place from Utah (SLC PUNK was pretty good!) to Tibet, but GTA-worthy movies? They take place in New York. They take place in Los Angeles. They take place in Vegas, Miami, and personally I still can't explain San Fransisco being in there, but I'm sure I'm just being dense or forgetful. Rockstar is doing it. Games have always had versions, added features. And new IPs brought other elements. Man, did you know when you are running from the cops in GTA IV you are playing pac man? Yes, you are playing pac man with arguably better AI, but still carries some of the dumber traits (look up PAc Man AI, it's pretty well thought out ^^). We all already know this by now, GTA is every game ever, but here is a view that not many get to see, the view that shows you how awesome Rockstar really is. I can really go on for a long time, but I bet your imaginations can piece together some of the awesome games to come when they are capable of doing even more of those awesome movie moments that just don't work right now and come out fun. And they will be new versions of your favorite settings from Hollywood. The places they use for movies. The whole west (again, can't explain SF lol) is movie land, and new york, and florida was scarface, sure, but don't count it out after that - maybe Vice Was very very Scarfaced based because there are slightly few epic GTA worthy movies in that particular part of florida and it had to be small at the time, and also fast to shelves It could definitely be possible that they are just saying that. As you can see, I agree. I just had a thought that it might still be the same era as GTA III. Some things that made me think this were Claude's outfit that you get if you decide to kill Playboy X. There is also the Madd Dogg and OG LOC CD's found in the Bohan safehouse. ( I believe that the Madd Dogg one is also in PBX's apartment. ) The graffiti on the walls around the city, hearing about VROCK and Love Fist on the radio, etc. In my humbled opinion, you have read this situation quite well. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to actually be in the past again in Vice City and hear those same Love Fist songs along with a few more from a subsequent album that actually play a wee bit more often than the "classics"? Sweet. Now, think of movies in Florida, and certainly Miami, when did they take place? How did they look? EXACTLY! EXCITEMENT! heh I could be wrong or I could be right, I was just thinking of this a few minutes ago and decided to post it to see if anyone else had the same assumptions. Aye, I'll just have to say 'same here'. But with strong strong feelings or intuition that We're pretty spot on. Nah nah nah, it's the same city, but at some point in history, it branched out, and those two versions were created - thus, different canons, but the same city, though changed. The universes are different, but some points are the same because not everything split off.See, it's quantum, or whatever passes for quantum around here. x2 heh, you read my mind while I posted. Algonquin Assassin
I think GTA IV is to GTA what Batman Begins is to Batman. Both use the same place as older renditions (Liberty City, and Gotham City), but both are completely different. So I think IV isn't exactly a brand new universe, but it's not really attached to the GTA III one either. The only way I would ever be convinced that this is still the same universe is if there was a intentional crossover, and by that I don't mean some character talking about a event similar to one in a previous game, but say a old character actually making an appearance in the game. I don't ever see that happening though. I think R* will stick to the GTA III era references, and let any previous events/characters lay to rest. Flesh-n-Bone
Also, Tommy met Vic in the very beginning of Vice City and watched him die - although this comes with some problems, it is the fact. That's just so untrue.
Trey819
i think the mcrearys are gonna become the family that will be in most upcoming games, like the leones were in gta 3-LCS. in gta 4 you had 6 mcrearys: Ma Packie Derrick Francis Gerald Kate Depending on who u pick on the Blood Brothers mission, Derrick or Francis, 1 of them die and depending on what you pick in the end, revenge or deal, kate can die so depending on what you choose only 1 or 2 of them die so i think the mcrearys will be in the next gtas most likely packie Use spoiler tags when discussing advanced storyline elements of GTA IV. Thanks-MM Edited January 26, 2009 by Mainland Marauder
