eDad.
Autorun.inf, what is it?
Edmachine
Formatting erases everything on the USB drive. Your files aren't hidden. They aren't there. After you formatted, did Avast tell that the new autorun.inf is a virus? If not, you don't have anything to worry about. If it did, scan your computer. SWEETSAPRIK
Try scanning with Avira AntiVir Free instead. Avast sucks like hell as an antivirus. ^This. Having tried just about every freeware A/V I could find, Avira is the one I'd suggest. That said, this might not be an infection of any kind. Have you read what eDad posted or followed his links? You could open the file in notepad, it should be pretty obvious if it's bad, or if it's a normal file placed there by Windows and sh*tass Avast is just freaking out because it sucks. Also: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ (edit) <links removed> I guess they don't allow linking to the report pages directly. To see them click Comparatives, then "online results" 19 and 20, which are the most recent. Edited January 22, 2009 by Sweets PяopagaиdaIиc. anus
Atleast you understand, Sweets. Well Eeshan, tried to help you, but since you're so confident that Avast is the best, which it MOST CERTAINLY is not, there's nothing more I can do. Edited January 22, 2009 by Warlord. eDad.
Have you read what eDad posted or followed his links? Why would he? You know how third time's a charm? Let's try: I repeat. Autorun.inf, what is it? And in case it IS a virus: Google 1. Google 2. Google 3. I'm taking bets on when he figures out what he's actually looking at. Prizes may include less frustration, smarter users, and more people using Avira (I use Avira too, and refuse to move from on it on the basic premise that it doesn't rape my system as much as any other free reputable antivirus software out there, personal experience, not necessarily a fact). H4milton
well, thanx eDad, i saw you links.......bt i've got more viruses than the autorun, inf I used Avira as suggested by Warlord, hell i've got 108 viruses and counting
anus
See how crap Avast is? You've had 108 viruses and Avast only catches one . Switch to Avira, you won't regret it.
Girish
See how crap Avast is? You've had 108 viruses and Avast only catches one . ...which isn't even a virus per se. I was using Avast a long time back until it started giving me these stupid popups about autorun.inf being a virus whenever I used a USB drive. I got rid of it immediately. There were no viruses in my PC. Been using Kaspersky since; quite satisfied I must say (and also because I have a valid license key).
okei
All anti-virus programs have their advantages and disadvantages. There is no 'best' anti-virus.

Slamman
I used a number of things on the Toshiba A25 XP formatted 60GB drive I had. It worked for some time but then refused to boot while still scanning as clean, it was partially password locked somewhere, I doubt that got cleaned as a result. Finally the blue screen of death prompted me to attach it with an adapter to a desktop, move as many files off to the main drive and wipe the damn thing...losing a full install of Office 03 in the process... I never got that back! The drive was freshly formatted and works as expected. Sometimes that's the ONLY recourse, so surf with a disposable drive, or back up EVERYTHING!!!! leik oh em jeez!
My antivirus? Windows XP MCE install disk. A good formatting will solve just about any problem.
Slamman
Not all computers come with this, but a partitioned restore function should allow recovery as well. I put Spybot and Prevx CSI as well as Windows Defender on the case. Still wound up non booting, I was and remain POed over the problem.
