Illousion
Recently when playing games, I have been experiencing that my CPU goes up to a 100% making the game freeze for about four seconds. And this is with any game, GTA SA, GTA IV, Garrys Mod, Mirrors Edge. Is my CPU broken? Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
Illousion
Look i'm sorry for being impatient and all but does'nt anyone have some sort of idea? Sorry for dubbleposting. Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
Shof
it would of been helpful if you post what kind of cpu you have
anus
What are your specs? Are you running any background apps while running the games? I'd also recommend doing full system scans after updating, with your antivirus (I recommend Avira), Spybot, Ad-Aware and then run CCleaner to clean up your registry and Windows/app files (run all CCleaner scans atleast 3 times), run Registry Mechanic atleast three times and compact your registry, then run UltimateDefrag and defragment your hard drive (s) with the file placement set to 'Strict placement'. Do a boot time defrag to defragment files like the pagefile. This is my weekly software-level PC maintenance. Just try it out and see if it helps. Illousion
Alright, I have the following; AMD Athlon 6000+ X2 3.0GHz Nvidia 9800GT 2GB RAM 2X 232GB Hard drive 370W Power supply. I Have scanned with NOD32 and Ad-Aware, NOD came up empty, but Ad-Aware found 1 file containing malware. I Removed that, but it did not help. I have been able to run theese games without problems before. I personally think that my CPU is broken or that my power supply is too weak. Bear in mind that my computer knowledge is about zero. anus
Have you cleaned up the inside of your PC anytime recently? Dust can do this. Actually, dust is probably one of the major causes of CPU usage jumping to 100%. Try cleaning it out. It could also be the PSU as the minimum for your 9800GT is 400W, so you'll have to get atleast 450W to be safe. But first try cleaning out the PC. When i bought my 9800GT the guys at that the store said 350 was recommended. But i'm thinking of getting a new PSU, CPU and motherboard. I'll try cleaning it though, could very well be a reason. anus
Its best if you do research online as most people at any kind of store don't know what the f*ck they're talking about . If you're thinking of upgrading your board, CPU and PSU, post here and give us a budget and site you want to buy from and we'll get you the best . chngdman
Did this only occur after the 9800? One thing, I *think* if it was power supply, you would not recover from the lockup and be forced to reboot. I could be wrong, but I am suffering the issue with persistant lockup and I'll let you know if the PSU I just ordered helped.
Illousion
Nah, this happened about a month ago (give or take). It worked fine for about a month or two, until this happened. Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
OverTheBelow
Had you installed any more ram or something as the such prior to this happening? I upgraded my ram to 4gb only to find this problem, and I realized it was a faulty ram card when I tried my spare.

Illousion
I just cleaned the CPU with compressed air. Damn! I have never seen so much dust in a cpu in my life! Seems to have solved the problem. Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
Fozzy Fozborne
See, what happens is that the dust clogs up the heatsink fan cooling your CPU. When this happens, your processor aggressively underclocks itself. The underclocking results in lower temperatures but slower speeds (hence the 100% CPU utilization), and when deemed safe, the chip's rated speed is resumed. That is, of course until you stress your CPU too hard and then you go through the same cycle. It's highly recommended you also clean out your power supply as these have no such mechanism and usually fail if overstressed.
anus
Totally agreed with Fozzy. Its best to clean out your whole PC at once as they're probably VERY dusty as well.
Illousion
I cleaned the whole thing while i was at it. Works like a charm now Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
anus
Congrats man. Just remember to give it a good clean once a month or so and you won't be having problems like these .
Illousion
Damn I'm speaking to soon here. I've been playing IV and Mirrors Edge this morning, and just now this latest hour you can hear something inside the computer just going "EEEEEEEEEEHHH" and then it all freezes. My CPU is broken, right? Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets.
anus
Dude, chill the f*ck out. CPUs rarely break just like that. Just calm down first. Did you try playing again after restarting? This kind of thing could happen randomly.
Illousion
Dude, chill the f*ck out. CPUs rarely break just like that. Just calm down first. Did you try playing again after restarting? This kind of thing could happen randomly. Yeah i did. It now also does the freezing with the noise just while surfing or listening to music. But neither Process Explorer or the task manager reports CPU usage or anything else unusual. Here is an Image; I have also checked with SpeedFan, and none of the tempratures are above 50. In fact, nothing is over 45 just surfing and listening to music. Btw, could it be the harddrive? EDIT: Yes it could be the hard drive! I just checked it with CHKDSK, result follows; Is it the problem? Edited January 25, 2009 by Illousion Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets. anus
Can you describe the noise you get a little bit more? I'm pretty sure that you're correct that the hard drive is indeed dying. Backup your data ASAP before it totally dies.
Illousion
Oh yeah, it's the hard drive. I took off the case and listned to it, and the noise clearly comes from the HDD. It's hard to describe the sound though. I have a second HDD, i'm gonna use that one and see if there is any difference. Dreaming of California, where the sun never sets. anus
I would recommend backing up the data ASAP from the hard drive that's faulty. It might die at any moment .

DeeperRed
Good luck dude Talking from sh*te loads of experiance. The last thing to blame is the porceesor becuase a broken processor usually means the PC won't boot. If its a hardware problem it will usually be the Hard Drive, they have the most moving parts meaning there the most likly to go wrong.
anus
I reently had a HDD fail on me. Only about 2.5 years too ! I'm seriously thinking of getting SSDs when they get here. Lost all my data in the HDD as it just died all of a sudden.
