How do I share RAM memory with my video card?

I 'm using an HP notebook, which is equiped with a GeForce 8400M GS with 256MB dedicated memory, and 4GB of RAM memory. I thought it was being shared already, but when I play GTAIV it says that I have only 240MB. Can anyone help me? Also, why it says I have 240MB if the dedicated memory is 256MB? I appreciate any help!

Well, your OS is using a bit of your memory. I doubt you have EXACTLY 256 megabytes, but you might, that's not so uncommon for exact values these days in video card ram. GTA is basically reporting that you have "this much ram left that we can use for the game since about 26 megs are on your OS (and since it's a shared video card/integrated solution, it needs to always use a bit of extra ram)"

You're good with what it reports (without actually having the lappy in front of me). I know it is a bit late for this, but there may not be a great performance when playing on those specs, and laptops in general. I hope you the best of luck, but you may struggle for a while getting things to work right.

Actually, I read it again, it seems you said you had some dedicated and some integrated - if that is the case my best guess (only a guess) is that GTA ignores this part or disables it completely (would not run any better with it, it would load your components big time)

don't you have to go into the bios and up the shared memory of the card if it supports it? also this will decrease the performance of the laptop

forgot about the commandline.txt lol

if you don't know how to:-

right click the desktop > new > text doc...

name it:- commandline

and add into it example & save then copy and paste it into the GTAIV folder with the exes:-

-availablevidmem 0.5

Doesn't everybody who has a 256Mb only have 240Mb available within the game? I do and my card has its own dedicated 256Mb.

Thanks for these answers, now I understand why it shows only 240 MB instead of 256 MB, but I still don't get what should I do to share some of the RAM memory with my video card... In the NVIDIA Control Panel it says that my total available graphics memory is 1535 MB, whitch 256 MB is the dedicated video memory and 1279 MB is the shared system memory. Does this mean that it's being shared already, but GTA IV doesn't recognize it? It's pretty annoying playing the game only in safe mode... Also, could you explain this availablevidmem to me? Thanks!
