GTA: The No Cussing Challenge

The Horror Is Alive

I wonder if Rockstar will listen to these wankers and take a break from the cussing?

Click if you dunno what I'm talking about

My question is:

1. Would you buy the game?

2. Would you enjoy the game?

3. Would you support Rockstar's decision?

Give your reasons biggrin.gif

My answers:

1. Yes, I probably would.

2. No, not as much as the other games. Swearing is what made GTA so gritty and fun colgate.gif

3. No, I wouldn't. As much as the game would, in some respects, appeal to a wider audience (old farts who can't stand swear words mainly), I would always miss the swearing. However, San Andreas could have used a bit of swearing decrease. It was incredible.

If it's good, I'll buy the game.

If they start saying stuff like "Aw shucks" or "bull corn" I'd buy it just for the camp factor. Obviously if it's good I'll enjoy it.

If it entertains me for my money, then hooray for Rockstar.

A Grand Theft Auto game without expletives is like a Spyro the Dragon game, which doesn't actually involve Spyro the Dragon!

Honestly, I think it's ridiculous that this could even be proposed. It's like saying there's nothing wrong with committing grand theft auto, sniping somebody's brains out, destroying property and vehicles and what have you, but language? God forbid, that's way out of line! The mature age rating is on the game case for a reason, and vulgar language should be the last thing on the 'remove from game' agenda.

If this were to be in force though, I'd most certainly still get my hands on a copy, just for the sake of actually being called GTA. Regarding the enjoyment factor, the game's storyline and other features from previous GTA's are what enticed me to like them so much, not the language used. So, if the game was to be in the same format as past GTAs, chances are I'll more than likely enjoy it just as much. Obviously I can't say for sure, though.

And no, I wouldn't support R*'s decision for reasons above.

That would be hilarious. Could you imagine Niko saying "Oh dear" and "Aww shucks" when his car crashes, that would be so camp.

But yea, GTA needs swearing, without it it would not function, nor be realistic.

I'm being more "supportive" of the idea because it is totally not happening. Like it or not, the San Andreas script was shades of Tarantino in the language department and it was popular. And besides, it helps energize the Jack Thompson wingnut types to giving the game free publicity and notoriety. SanAn outsold Vice and is the best selling game of all time in the USA.

My question is:

Why? dozingoff.gif

Sure, the adult humour could still work without cussing, but it would lose that charm that it was made famous for. San Andreas was a bit too much I have to admit though.

Lemme guess the main protagonist - Bernie Crane. And all the other NPCs will be gay too, I believe. Because that's what the game will feel like - GAY!

If R* makes a game without cussing, the protagonist will be Claude once again. Every other character will also be mute. Cut scenes will feature Claude walking into the room with another character, some meaningful looks being exchanged along with a shrug or two, and off you go to do the mission. GTA: Dumb City.

My call would be to set it in 1920s Chicago or Boston and cast the whole thing as a "silent film" version of GTA. Black and white, grainy old scratched film visual effects, the whole nine yards. Would get around this little no-profanity restriction nicely.

Knowing Rockstar, they'd still slip in a loud "f*ck!" in the final line of the script.

But yeah if it was GTA action I wouldn't mind too much I think.

As I demonstrated in the other thread, you don't need the typical cuss words to be completely vulgar. For another example, instead of one of the lines being something like:

"Go f*ck yourself!"

they could always leave out expletives and opt for a line like this:

Go affix your mouth to the underside of an unwashed donkey and don't come up for air!"

Or for something less loquacious:

Go drop your pants and fall backwards on a rusty post!

Obviously, a line like, "Go f*ck yourself," is short, sweet and gets the sentiment across quickly. Don't fix what isn't broken. Swearing is here to stay.

It's just that it is too difficult to imagine a crime world without swearing. The use of bad words is imminent. Besides, GTA has never been a 3+ game. Why curb that which is necessary?

So.... Your main argument is that GTA should have swearing because it can? I'm really not feeling that one. I agree that writers shouldn't be trying to avoid particular words just because they are "bad". For that matter, I don't think there is a reason for that ever. But SA and IV felt like they were pushing that point at times. Ok, so some thugs in real life really can't express their point of view by any other means than saying "f*ck" a lot. But if that applies to all of the characters in the game, I really have hard time identifying with any of the characters, and at that point, what is even a reason behind having a story at all? So yeah, don't try to avoid words, but don't just use them because you can.

No. No. No.

GTA Is an adult oriented game,no cursing in it is ridiculous. Do I agree SA could have cut down on it, yeah. But it is realistic, street gangs talk that way.

Nah, my point is that GTA must have swearing because it should. As an ardent GTA fan, it is very difficult for me to even imagine a crime oriented game without any kind of swearing. I agree that it is not necessary for all characters to swear but I don't think that R* has overdone it in any case. If the character requires it, do it. That's all I say.

I think (he started) the language in GTA games is fine. It is used for comedy and atmosphere purposes, and keeps it's in good context, yes even in SA.

Imitators such as Saints Row, the latest Driver game(s), the Getaway games... tend to swear for the sake of it. The swearing of pedestrians often seems to come from nowhere and seems completely inappropriate and out of context. Infact, in the Getaway at the end (the second game I think) the villain, being Londonish, casually throws the C word around. Now I don't know how British the C word is from the viewpoint of say, americans. But being british I do know it is the strongest word we have, and certainly don't use it in That way, if ever used.

Well that's it. Imitators throw in swear words to compete with GTA and do it badly in my opinion. Whereas GTA's bad language is intergrated into the game as a whole with good intent. So, would I still buy, enjoy and support a GTA game without foul language? Given their previous products I expect I would.

GTA would be ruined if all the characters were talking like Queen Elizabeth and George Bush.

As long as they don't get racist or blaspehemic it's okay to swear.. and come on. even Christians uses f*ck

That would certainly make the story line difficult to follow.
