How long will GTA4 be around?

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on how DLC is going to effect the future of GTA4. They are saying DLC is an experiment, if successful GTA4:LC could be around for quite a long time, just continually updated. Question is how long will people be happy to continue playing this one city?? How long before people start feeling bored even with new DLC and want something totally new? How long would you all be prepared to wait, getting DLC, before you want a new full GTA with a different setting, character, story?

Also how much of this do you think will be done with DLC? How does this effect 100% completion?

Now I'm going to throw in my ideas on what I'd like to see, its a bit of wild speculation but something I'd really like to see happen:

I like the idea of DLC, hopefully we'll see it on PC not just consoles, otherwise I could be waiting a long time before I get anything new from R*. Even with DLC I'm hoping for something more, I'd like to see some expansion packs, they could do a lot more with these since the size of the content can be much larger. So a combo of DLC and expansions could really keep things fresh for a long time to come and no need to release a new standalone GTA. Expansion packs could include entirely new cities that simply connect in with the existing city with some country area in between. Perhaps a really great way to do this would be to make the expansion so it can be run standalone without GTA4:LC, or so it plugs-in to LC so gamers can choose. When you install it checks to see if you have LC and then gives you the option of connecting them together making a larger world:

Example VC in an expansion:

If you choose not to combine the game you have just VC with a story, content, 100%, just like any other GTA and no countryside.

If you do decide to combine them you get the above as if it were a standalone product but you get additional content installed such as countryside between VC and LC, you get a second story added and it has mission in the 2 cities and country area. You'd also get a second 100% added, so basically 100% for LC as is now, 100% for VC, 100% overall.

Now I'm not saying this will happen and I know this is nothing more than a wild idea for now, but considering GTA4 has been made with adding content in mind I dont see any reason why they couldn't do this. Also as I said I feel DLC alone could get boring after a while because it may not add enough to keep things fresh and no matter how much content there is in LC people may get bored with the same setting, having expansion packs to add whole new cities and other much larger content could really change that.

Anyway thats my thoughts, now what do others think, how far should DLC be taken before we get a whole new GTA experience?

There is no way a new GTA isn't currently in planning stages or even already in development. The DLC isn't like a whole expansion pack like Sims expansion packs, that add totally new features and stuff. It is more of like a COD: United Offensive, just a new character and a couple of missions, thats all. I am sure they have the majority of their crew on the new GTA and a small group making DLC.

I doubt that other than Lost and Dammed, there will probably be maybe two more DLC's, IF THAT.

Well, we ARE getting a new character and story in the DLC. The city could continually change with new interiors, road and bridge construction, new buildings, even new neighborhoods. Just like real cities are continually changing.

In theory Rockstar could stay in Liberty City indefinitely, just like there's no limit to how many movies can be set in New York, or for that matter how much of a person's life can be spent in one city.

There's a lot of potential for expansion in the current Liberty City, it would be easy to add new interiors, vehicles, weapons and characters, and R* could even develop or expand the city if the next DLC is set after the Niko storyline. In theory we could see entirely new areas or cities accessible through the airport - even if that is only like returning to Liberty City with CJ. I for one would like the idea of catching a plane to San Andreas for a few missions and maybe see a few familiar faces.

I totally agree, there are more than enough possibilities to pimp up the current city.

So many Shop´s that could be used and combined with small new features...

1. If my clothes got dirty I could clean them in that dry-cleaner-shops..

2. If I could by a camera in that camera-shops I could do screenshots..

3. If I could use the bars and pubs alone too... that would be nice.

A small anime for getting a fresh beer by the barkeeper should not be that hard!?

Not to think of enjoying a Clubvisit... dancing or

4. Let me get a Coffee in the Star Cafes... and hell yeah, I want a f*cking smokeanime and the possibility

to buy cigarettes. Not to think of some thai sticks... it is GTA!

5. When I put my car in these garages to change the color, hm... wouldn´t it be nice to choose between

the offered colors?

Some ideas I had written in some other threads too...

That are barely hard small tweaks that could be done so quick and easy... or are that uberutopies?

Some of that R*s should be tied up with performance boosting and the rest with building up the next GTA IV sequel. If I could through in an idea...

GTA IV: TEXAS in the 60ies or the 70ies.

You could spare Texas with any other crazy state in the US. But my point is in a whole different time and a state with some countryside!

Countryside is another thing that could be added to Liberty City, along with other stuff from San Andreas like tattoos, hair cuts and whatnot for your character, there are also plenty of auto repair places around the city (both usable and not) which could be made functional for vehicle customization. I'm sure a lot of people want a new game, new city etc. etc. but I wouldn't mind at all if the current Liberty City is fleshed out more over a few DLC packages.

W Blue Sky Lives

I think the earliest GTA IV will start to disappear is early/mid 2010. I think it's all up to how far R* wants to take it. The city itself does have a lot of potential - unused empty buildings, buildings that can be made empty, the inclusion of new vehicles, weapons, side missions, mini games, multiplayer modes... The sky is the limit. Unfortunately, the addition of these features take time to make, and over time, people's interest will diminish. All in all, it's hard to tell how long it will be around.

I actually agree with most people in that yes there is a lot of room for expansion and fleshing out LC more, but one question is how big, in terms of file size, should DLC be before they bung it on a CD/DVD for us to buy at local game store?

I mean DLC I would of thought would be less than 4GB, much less, but that also limits how much they can add through any one DLC package, so to me an expansion sold on DVD would allow for more expansion each time, but thats why I say I'd like to see a combo of both, DLC, then a expansion on DVD which does a more major update, then back to some more DLC before another DVD expansion, these DVDs would be instead of releasing separate GTA4s like we saw with the 3 GTA3s, so rather than ending up with 3 separate games we end up with one giant sized game. Perhaps also in time would be nice to see DVDs that contain all pervious DLCs on it so you've also got them if you need to do a re-install and wont need to download gigs and gigs of content all over again, so maybe every 3 or 4 DLC packages they should release a DVD with them all together in one easy package. I know we can put them on DVD ourself for those with a PC and if PC's actually get this content, but I still prefer something more official so I know I'll always have that content when I want to install later on and dont end up finding out the DVD I made myself one file got corrupted and its been removed from the net cause GTA4 has become too old.

GTA IV is easily the best GTA ever made, but that being said, it still has loads of potential.

i agree.

they can still work it out with e.g. more shops (somewhere down in ray's / kiki's area as well as in upper algonquin you can find a didier sachs) or they create a new vice city or los santos and it will be possible to travel there from francis international.

alderney got a lot of potential, some car chases (brucies races there are my favourites), buildings going to be open, etc.

i hope the gta 4 era will stay for some episodes. hopefully we're going to see a new vice city and los santos.
