Game won't start when system resolution is set

Recommended Posts

If I set my display resolution above 1280x1024 and go to start the game, I get the dd3d30 error. I also tried using the command line to set the game resolution to match the system's resolution. I still get that error. My card can go up to 2048x1536 and my monitor whose native resolution is 1280x1024, can go up to 1680x1050(I have to uncheck "Hide modes this monitor cannot display" in display properties to go above 1280x1024 of course). Does the game not allow you to set it's resolution above your monitor's native resolution? Maybe If I installed the generic monitor driver instead of the specific driver for it, GTAIV won't know what its native resolution is? In the game I can't set the resolution above 1280x1024 BTW.

I'm happy with 1280x1024. I just want to experiment.

here are 2 links from our good friend google that you might find helpful wink.gif

if those don't help, search a little yourself. rolleyes.gif

next time I suggest you to search on google first, cause you may get a solution faster and you don't open a new topic here to a problem that's already been discussed and got a solution.

I did Google. I gues I didn't use the right combination of words.

One of those links just suggests setting the system resolution lower which is completely opposite of what I want to do. The other link suggests the problem is refresh rate. But I'm not changing the refresh rate. It a separate setting in display properties and in the game I make sure the referesh rate is the same when I change the resolution.
