Inconsitent Performance, some bad some good

I am having trouble with performance but it's very inconsistent. Sometimes I can start the game and it plays as it should (35-40 fps) and other times it's too slow to even walk smoothly.

I have a Q6600 running @ 2.4

Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit

4GB RAM

9800 GT card.

Nothing else really installed on the system, just Avast which I have disabled when I run it.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Thanks much!

Naw, I disabled the avast service (and it's a small engine anyway) before I start the Rockstar club. I'm inclined to just think the game is a POS build, but getting to play it half the time at 42FPS is kick ass and a lot of fun, but i never know how it's going to perform when I start it.

Same here, the game starts beautifully and then after a while my fps drop to the single digits.

I'm right there with you. Sometimes i can start the game and it will play great for about 10 mins, then an extreme drop in performance. Other times I can start the game and the performance is crap right off the bat. I have tried every tweak on these forums with no results good or bad, performance stays the same. I have been going back and forth with Rockstar support for the past month and all they do is treat me like a child telling me to clean my temp files and reinstall the game, like I havent tried that already. I am a heavily educated PC technician, not an idiot. The problem does not lie with me or my computer, but with the game itself. The retailer will not let me return the game, and Rockstar will not take it either. Im about to just uninstall it and throw it in the trash.

ATi Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB PCI-e

Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit

You dont have enough ram to run GTA IV in Vista, thats the problem.

I got it running "OK" on

C2Q9300

4870 512 MB

4 GB RAM

Vista Ultimate SP1 32 bit

with FPS anywhere between 25 and 55 (most of the time it lingers around 35 with occasional stalls just to make sure I don't enjoy it too much) but with severe lag/stutter and sh*t after about 45 minutes. Then I remembered about reading something in the texture glitches threads so I try to ALT+TAB out of the game and back - wtf the game is back to normal. The performance even increases for a few minutes before getting back to normal.

This game you need to LEARN how to play. And all those in-game tutorials just don't cut it biggrin.gif

Try switching to XP (or even Windows 7). Maybe try overclocking your CPU to at least 3 Ghz. Its just insane you're having problems with those specs. Even with Vista.

I was having the gradual FPS drop problem until I upgraded my GPU(an 8400GS), to the same one you have oddly enough.

For you guys with dual core AMD CPU's. try installing the AMD Optimizer. It made a difference for me.

I do have the Win7 beta, but it will run out by mid-summer, the only OS I have is Vista Ultimate. I didn't get a chance to try the command line options but will search through here and try that tonight.

I'm in the same place as a lot of people I guess, my computer kicks ass at everything else but GTA4 smile.gif The two other games I play often run just fine now, Dead Space and The Witcher and each of those CRAWLED on my machine before I upgraded my CPU/GPU.

Beta running out? dontgetit.gif So you're an actual Microsoft beta tester? Your not one of the millions of unofficial beta testers? I assume you can just crack it and use it beyond the deadline.

weird, GTA4 run pretty smooth for me, not excatly sure bout FPS but i never notice any drop in FPS.

my rig:

C2Q Q6700

8800GT 512MB

4GB ram

Vista Ultimate SP1 x64

commandline:

-novblank

-fullspecaudio

to OP, update your drivers, maybe that'll help.???

p.s. here's my setting for GTA4 in NVIDIA Control Panel

AA - x2

Antialiazing Transparency - Multisampling

Force MipMaps - Bilinear

Anistropic Sample Optimization - On

in Game settings:

resolution - 1024x768 @ 75Hz (maybe this is why i'm running smoothly?)

texture - Medium

render - highest

view distance - 35

detail distance - 35

vehicle density - 40

shadow - 1

Hello,

Has anyone else noticed in certain lighting conditions performance is better than others? Obviously in tunnels/shops/houses/near the coast the performance is much better than in town, but under some lighting conditions the game does play much better.

Later/clear evening and early/clear morning run best on my computers (I've tried it on a few).

Has anyone else noticed this? (I've tried searching through the forums but have yet to find anything matching, sorry if I have double posted)

i have the same issue..

game perform best at ingame evening/night/early morning, when i get +10 FPS, so i'm on +/- 45 FPS ..dont matter if is raining or not..

when is sun out, i'm on +/- 35 FPS

in between some walls (houses, shops, tunnels, etc) im on nice 60-70 FPS..

i get lowest performance on bridges at day and around China town area, where my FPS drops to 20-25

my specs:

Q9550 @ 3,41 GHz

4GB RAM

HD 4870X2 2x1GB VRAM

Vista Home 32-bit

game settings:

resolution: 1440x900

texture: high

renders: highest

view distance: 25

detail distance: 45

vehicle density: 51

shadows: 1 (i cant see any difference between 1 or 16)

ingame benchmark: +/- 55 FPS

commandline:

-novblank

tweaks:

tweaked blur

tweaked timecyc.dat - farclip @ 3500

sorry for broken english wink.gif

Install WinMem Optimizer, and defragment your memory every time you load the game... then it will do it itself every 10 minutes, which makes it absolutely playable... check my specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 @ 2,4Ghz

1Gb (!!) Ram (used to have 1,5 but one of the 512mb rams went bad)

ATi Radeon HD 2600XT 512Mb

WinXP SP3

I run it on medium graphic details, and with the memory being optimized every 10 minutes, it works fine and absolutely playable, sometimes it slows down for a few seconds while the optimizer works, but that's all. I really suggest to install it, or a similar kind of application.

Anyone who enlist on W7 site and got serial is legal.

WinMem Optimizer is for retards, as it will do nothing to "optimize" memory, even because it is not possible to be done.

more retarded bullsh*t. i play it on vista "fine" with 2 gigs of ram. i even added another stick of ram and there was no difference. sh*t it doesnt even use 2 gigs of ram. the max its ever used was 1.2 gigs of ram.

*if you call 20 fps fine.

anyway back to the topic at hand. sounds like you guys have a memory leak. try setting your windows paging file to the same size of our ram. make the min and max the same number.
