Omnia sunt Communia
I've been contemplating purchasing a banjo. Mainly due to my love for country, folk and folk punk artists. I was wondering if anybody on GTAF had an experience with this beautiful instrument? Do we have any players in the building? If so, then do you have any tips for a newbie? Practices? Songs? Etc. Also, discuss banjos and banjo related music.
Mike Tequeli
I don't have much music with banjos in it, although it's certainly an interesting instrument. I'm pretty sure there is some banjo on Perfect Disguise by Modest Mouse. This is pretty impressive.
Rhoda
Me and my dad are contemplating getting a banjo; him for the crack of owning a banjo, and me for the desire to learn to play. I can play guitar, albeit not very good, and while I'm going to get floods of people saying the two instruments are completely different, I'll at least know where to put my fingers. Besides, how many 18 year olds do you know that can play a banjo?

Machida
A banjo sits behind the bar in my local booze up. No doubt the lost remains of one of the hard rocking annual folk festivals the place holds . It often gets played after a night of hard tipple when we each think it a good idea to try and attempt our best George Formby impressions… I can't play for toffee mind you. Guglielminpietro
Not quite a banjo, but I actually have a ukulele on order, should be delivered in a couple of weeks. I plan to learn how to play it - I've been playing guitar for some 6 years now, so it shouldn't be too much of a leap just to get my head around the different tuning and chord formations. I figured it would be a bit of fun, and with it being smaller it's a more portable instrument than a guitar. Plus you can pretty much cover any song on ukulele or banjo and make it sound original. soundcloud.com/TheDamnFineCoats
Slamman
I'm an unabashed EAGLES fan, I will be forever, and it's worth noting that Bernie Leadon is considered one of the better American players. I never had an attachment to it, until I got a Steve Martin record, then he would come on talk shows and play, amazingly well. One of the other celebs asked to play on it (IIRC, maybe another instrument) said they didn't like being put on the spot because of the funny face they make while playing, I know how true that is, I do the same thing when I'm concentrating! haha Love the dual from Deliverance, it doesn't seem to get any better then that, it's so classic
Moonshield
I prefer electronic instruments to natural ones. Then why the hell would you even post here? Seriously. My uncle owns a mandolin that I've been known to rip on, but never tried a banjo. I've always had some weird desire to jam with a bluegrass band, but I'd think I'd go into more blues riffs on a mandolin or my bass.
Slamman
Yeah? A Mandolin is cool so you can do The Battle of Evermore by Zeppelin and The Love Mongers (Ann and Nancy Wilson)
